You only play through a game once? Man, I play through several times to see what's different. I wish I had the option to not recruit or to kill Anders and Merrill. I guess I can see Anders being "important" to the plot because of what he does in the end, but there was no reason for Merrill to be forced on you. People who hate Sebastian have the luxury of skipping him, I never had the option to skip the ones I hate.

I had to metagame hardcore to end up with both Anders AND Merril dead in my pro-templar Hawke play through. It was worth it. :P

Uh, How about him being the only sane person you meet in you're entire time in Kirkwall? Aka being of the mind that socializing with Blood Mages and Abominations is bad.

And he never moved to alert the Templars on either party, He didn't even turn against Anders until his little explosion.

Maybe it's because i like the character i don't like the notion of him being ruined merely out of spite.

Pfff hahahaha.  Sane?  You're kidding me, right?  The same guy that stuck his fingers in his ears and couldn't make up his mind for the entire game?  He's a wishy-washy idiot that has never had a thought of his own in his life.  A dull puppet of the Chantry that would have been better off as a NPC.  He isn't "sane" anymore than the rest of Kirkwall.  He has the same awful tendency of trying to prove his views correct no matter what.  There was nothing stable about him, just hides it better than the rest.

He threatened to turn in Merril and Anders, remember?  It was the fear, yes the fear of Hawke that stopped him.  Threaten my friends?  Excuse me, let me go get my murderknife.

It isn't out of just pure spite.  If he thinks he's so in the right about mages and the Maker, let him walk in a mage's shoes for just a few minutes.  Otherwise, he can go back to Starkhaven and pout because I wouldn't and he couldn't kill Anders.  Poor baby.

And you can murder the people you dislike, whereas Sebastian is immortal, so this seems wholly ridiculous.

I don't hate Sebastian... but he proved himself as my enemy at the end, so screw him.

Oh don't remind me, the salt on my wound. At least you could send Anders away.

Things might change. If Sebastian is opposed to mage autonomy, he would likely be an enemy on my first run. I can't see my elven Inquisitor supporting a regime in Starkhaven looking to bring back the status quo.

I remember KoP made a Dwarven Warden who played puppet master to a malleable and weak-willed King Alistair. Dain Aeducan and Alistair. I wonder if such an opportunity may be possible in Inquisition.

I don't play through the game once, but when I make choices I always roleplay as if I don't know what is going to happen ( if I do. ). It's like I said, I don't metagame.

Even though you know you don't like the character, you go out of your way to recruit him? This kind of thing isn't metagaming to me, since your character could have easily ignored Sebastian's requests because they had other more pressing matters or just because they disagreed. I roleplay too but if I know there's nothing I want in a side dungeon that I've played a million times I don't play it again (even though the character doesn't know there's nothing of value there) also sometimes there are characters I don't want as part of my story so I don't go out of my way to recruit them.

I hope so, Sebastian was a decent character, and has a resolution we can see in new games for sure, if the Starkhaven line survives or not.

For me, personally, I only recruited him to get XP. Otherwise, I feel like he got gypped as a character and was kind of boring.

Sebastian protecting mages if you side with them: https://www.youtube....h?v=xj9t0oIqFfA

It's not like he just wants to torment mages, Merrill and Anders are dangerous. Anders is an abomination that could snap at any second and go on a killing spree (as he has proven when killed or almost killed Ella, the very person you were there to save) he agrees with selling Fenris back into slavery, he thinks it's a good idea to murder Ser Thrask one of the few good Templars who is trying to save the lives of mages (in favor of the murderous blood mages who tried to kill you you 5 seconds earlier). In the end he proves Sebastian right by mass murdering a bunch of innocents. Merrill is a blood mage with the mental capacity of a child who consorts with demons regularly and we've all seen how well that turns out for the many many blood mages and demon worshipers of Kirkwall. Wanting to turn those two in is a reasonable opinion.

Look, you are trying to understand peoples hatred for Sebastian, it's simple - he threatens peoples friends. It is completely irrelevant who those friends are, it doesn't matter whether they are dangerous, or criminals, or psychotic killers or something in between, all that matter is that those are friends. And when someone threatens your friends, you get pissed, easy as that. We can express opinions about whether or not Anders and Merrill are good people and if they are worthy of friendship, but that is not the point, the point is for some they are friends and they don't like them being threatened.

And how do you know you don't like the character before you recruit him, if you don't metagame of course? Duty is a simple request of killing bunch of mercs to avenge his family, he doesn't talk too much of himself afterwards, neither does Elthina. So, unless you are actively opposed to the Chantry or royalty, nothing really warrants not recruiting him.

I didn't see it that way, but to each their own.  He had some nerve threatening my friends.  He's a "Johnny-Come-Lately," and if my friends are dangerous, I will take care of it.  Even my pro-Circle/pro-Templar warrior couldn't stand that.  I don't care how reasonable he is, he was willing to try to go over Hawke's head to turn in her companions.

Sebastian protects the mages, if and only if you kill Anders.  Which I did, once.  Otherwise, he whines he way back into the "Kill Anders or I'll beat you up"  shtick.

You know, I didn't know Anders approved giving Fenris back to his former master until I hit this forum.  If you don't metagame, how is Hawke supposed to know that?  My Hawke thought Anders was a little dangerous, but nothing she couldn't handle.  Well, at least until the end.  I also don't recall him at any point asking Hawke to kill Thrask.  May I get a source for that?

I disagree wholeheartedly about Merril having the "mental capacity a child," since she was a blood mage for several years and only (possibly) fell to a demon in the Fade sequence.  She consorts with demons "regularly?"  What?  We only hear of her doing so once before DA2 (when she went to the demon initially ) we see her perform a "summoning" (I saw no dealing with demons there, merely channeling the magic she already had.) When she goes back to try to talk to the spirit, that overly soft-hearted Keeper had already had herself willingly possessed. There is the aforementioned Fade sequence, true. Which, as you remember, everyone in main cast but Justice can fall to possession in that sequence.

Varric, Merril and Fenris--Pride

Isabela, Aveline--Desire

Wanting to turn in those two is a selfish option.

Reply to the bolded part: That's why I asked if KainD only did one playthrough of a game usually. The second time you would know if you like them or not. As for the rest, please read the post you quoted for the answer.

But you don't really recruit him, as well as almost everyone in DAII (except for Fenris). You just go talk and - BAM, they are stick to you for better or worse. That was the general flaw for the companions in DA to me, and a big itch that i couldn't forgive the game for.

Sigh, why couldn't we have BGII system of recruitment?
