I would be intrested in finding out how much i need to manage my team during missions. I did not bother much at all when i played Mass Effect 1 but i have been told that to succed on the higher settings veteran/hardcore i need to manage my team.

So is positioning enough or do i need to manage their powers as well.

And what do other people do with their teams.

Enemies will shoot the nearest threat, so place your squadmates behind you into cover and you take point. You will take all the fire, but you can survive it longer than your squadmates typically can.

Also, when your squadmates are behind you out of your line of sight, their powers will cast instantly. If they are in your line of sight, they will perform a casting animation; they will not perform this animation if they are behind you.

You should also set squadmate powers to "defense only". You want to control when and where they use their powers.

Also, try not to spec into squadmate defensive powers (Fortification, Barrier, Shield Boost) if you can help it. They have excessively long cooldowns and are not terribly effective on higher difficulties. If you have the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, completing it will give you access to a terminal that will allow you to re-assign squadmate talent points, allowing you to remove points from these defensive powers.

Red has covered the basics. Not much to add, except I will relate how I typically approach a battle:

1) Run into a room

2) Pause the action (power wheel on xbox)

3) While paused look around for cover positions

4) Order team mates to cover positions

5) Release the power wheel (unpause)

6) Move to a position closer to the enemy than my squad

Never, ever let your squad use their powers on their own. They will not be available when you want them.

If you are good with the hotkeys/dpad, then you can use those to order your squad to use their powers. I am not so good with the dpad (I accidently issue a movement order rather than an attack command way too often) so I use the power wheel. I use hotkeys for Shepard's powers, but the power wheel for team mates. I have gotten used to pausing the game every few seconds. These pauses are usually very short so they do not really interrupt the flow of the action. The power wheel can also let you know if a certain power can be used against an enemy. Sometimes a mech or a husk might have a sliver of armor left on that you can't see in the HUD, but when you bring up the power wheel you will see that Pull or Slam is displayed as red, meaning they will not work.

You need to manage them a lot in ME2 if you want them to survive the whole mission.

I never manage my teammembers. Do not be scared. They have a dynamic AI. They shoot, take cover, use their powers . All i do is use my singularity ,warp . And shoot with with warpammo. I somtimes use and direct one of my teammates powers. And if one or both of them die a lot , well then they will not be in my squad so often.

I feel like my team's survivability was a lot better in ME2 than ME1. Kaidan died countless times on my ME1 playthrough that it was sort of a joke/meme between me and my brother. I specialized him for survivability as much as possible after noticing him dying though and it seemed to have fixed it.

I want to say that your teammembers can handle themselves. On insanity you notice that better, because it takes a bit longer to defeat your opponents. But they have a decent AI. I think Zaeed has a tendency to 'die' more often. My problem is that i want to keep my medigel . I don't want to spend to much without thinking, you know.
