Someone said spears were a specialty of the chevalier. I don't know if that's true, though? I don't remember much about chevaliers.

I would be surprised, the codex entry on their founding only speaks of swords, specifically enchanted swords. I would assume they would be very skilled with lances, since Chevaliers would normally be on horseback as heavy Calvary. But on foot I would think a sword & shield would be their weapon of choice since spears are generally the weapon of common soldiers in mass ranks. A knight would conduct a calvary charge with a lance and when that was no longer useful or broken they pulled out a sword or mace/flail and would wail on dudes from above until the battle was won or they were brought to the ground where they would continue wail on dudes with a sword or mace/flail.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, it's just I don't get that vibe when I look at him, he seems a bit light on the armour side of things for a chevalier IMO.

Because of his spear/staff, because apparently mages never use staves that look like halberds, except when they totally do.

I still think the theory that he's an arcane warrior was pretty good.

Well, basically term Chevalier derives from "mounted knight" and is a member of knight order. Mounted knights historically were proficient with heavy spears as their main weapon in mounted combat, as well as various close-combat weapons from broadswords to morning stars.

Proficient with lances, yes, but not really the sort of spear that he's holding. That's even assuming that chevalier tactics and weaponry follows Earth's historical reality, and even then the style of combat would change depending on the time period.

As far as I remember the references to chevaliers in the novels had them wearing heavy armour, and this character is wearing robes in most of the concept art where he is featured:

Apparently Orlesian Chevaliers resemble our medieval Chevaliers, based on that picture:

And from your concept is really hard to tell anything about the weapon of that guy.

They seem to be pretty heavily armored in comparison, though.

Well, apparently. They are heavy cavalry, not nomads. You can compare them with tanks in modern warfare. And yes, that guy doesn't look like a Chevalier in full battle gear, unless it's his marching garb.

I admit, I'm really curious who this guy is.

I lean toward the "arcane warrior" theory, which would mean he's most likely Dorian. However, he could also be Rhys or an unknown chevalier... or one of our advisors/Seneschal. He's not happy about the Inquisitor messing up his map, after all.

Could be very fun if he's always dramatic as his art suggests.

I don't really think he's Rhys, as he's too busy in the conflict

I still like the concept of him being an arcane warrior. I don't think he looks like a chevalier based on the little we know about them. I would say mage, but I've never seen a mage that also carried a sword? He's lightly armored for a normal warrior, though. So, I like the arcane warrior theory. Also, because we haven't really had anything like that, so it would be interesting.

The survey did just call Dorian a mage, though, so it's confusing. The concept art and the blurb were both out together, so they couldn't really have been changed between. Maybe the sword doesn't really mean anything. Maybe those and the two little swords on Iron Bull will just be for looks. Or the possibility that he was just never Dorian, which is also on the table.

The guy off the horse still has a lot of plating on. Our guy "Dorian" looks like his entire outfit is just draped cloth, to me. I don't really see any metal on him.

I think you can get a more recent visual representation of what Chevaliers will likely look like from Mark of the Assassin and The Golden Prince's Raiment from Warrior Item Pack 1. No Orlesian would be caught dead wearing something so drab and practical as the armor from the RPG art.

That being said, I still highly doubt DHMG is a Chevalier. There are already plenty of warrior followers, and his body type and garb don't suggest it at all.

I think the survey concept art is important in the sense that they want to fit everything they can about the character in one image - and if he's an arcane warrior, that would involve showing him with both a staff and a sword. I think it's notable for showing that he's holding the staff with one hand, and I really can't see how a warrior would use a spear-one handed with a sword in the other.

(and more specifically, the angle he's holding the 'spear' at is how every other mage holds their staff, and the 'spear' itself looks way too thin. If it didn't have a point on it, would there be any doubt that it was a staff?)

There's also a precedent for Tevinter magisters using swords - Aurelian Titus from the comics is pictured wearing one:

His mustache and potential magi-ness totally fits one of my character descriptions from one of the old ass "WHAT CHARACTERS DO YOU WANT IN DA 3!!!" threads from like 2012.

A curled mustache mage of high society who drinks tea with extended pinky, is super polite, enjoys all the finer things in life but is an evil as **** mother fucker who murders babies for blood magic.
