I was going to make my first comment on this thread about this character.... then I saw an image of a peacock with the guy's face on it.....
Now I'm going to leave. ![]()

Apparently Dorian's surname translates to peacock.
It's been suggested that Dorian might be the Magister cast out of Tevinter to Anderfels, who had this healing power, of bringing people back to life. Peacock was used as a symbol of resurrection and immortality. You'll see them sometimes in religious paintings and motifs on churches.

I was bored so I made "doll" versions of all the companions, so I just wanted to pop by here and share my DHMG. Sadly it is devoid of dramatic hands.

Please don't hurt me if I got it wrong *fades back to Cullen Thread*
*EDIT* The image was broken for a while, I fixed it.
His staff isn't a trident, though.
At best it's a spear with a crescent moon or horseshoe along the bottom of the spearhead.
The trident pictures came about because people were misinterpreting the first picture - the extra bar on the left is not attached to the staff. It's the hilt of the sword he's carrying in his other hand.

The word "Dorian" does not mean "from the sea", either. Its etymology in ancient Greek is murky at best, and people have suggested multiple plausible meanings for the word.
But by far the common modern usage of Dorian is Dorian Gray - and I'd almost certainly think this where the writers got the name. Over-analysing the meaning of every companion's name is not useful if those original meanings were not the reason why the devs chose the name. How can we be sure that looking at the etymology says anything meaningful about the character?
("Cassandra" might indeed mean "She who entangles men", but how can we ever assume this is the reason the devs chose the name, or that the name gives any hint at all about the character? Surely it's far more likely they named her after the mythological Cassandra of Troy, a seer.)

Tridents have various forms, the middle is usually spear formed, while the other two vary. From being pointy to bent and rounded.
EDIT: But now that you mention crescent moon, add that with tridents and serpents and you've got Shiva.
Anyway, one can say that none of the analysing is useful as it all may be wrong for all we know. Though I think that is what these threads are for?
If he doesn't turn out to be as magnificent as we suspect I'll be a bit disappointed ![]()
PEACOCK DORIAN
I need to draw this thing
...
Okay, I'm sorry, I know that was just a typo you made, and you meant *DESERT*, but now all I'm visualizing is Dorian popping out of a cake (you know the kind), definitely NOT as a baby, and I'm not entirely sure what to do with that mental image.
Welp, there's one typo I'll never be fixing. Someone's gotta draw this, pronto.
I want it on a tshirt, a hat, a tote bag, a coffee mug, and my car.
Oh my
Never seen so much fan art in such a short period of time.
that's how I felt when the Cullen thread appeared on here and got to 100+ pages in under an hour. Gods above, what kind of short-soaking magic does he possess?

Alternately, she's named that just because it's a name the devs thought sounded good on a superficial level. *shrug*
Lmfao. I love the fans of DHMG.
indeed they are all recockulous ![]()

True.
I guess what I'm saying is that just because a name has a particular meaning, doesn't mean the devs even considered that when picking it for the character. Like the Last Supper picture, it could be a case of people looking for patterns and symbolism where none were intended to exist.
I know we're all assuming he's a love interest because he is a gorgeous human male with what looks like a lot of personality, but what if he isn't? Maybe he's the companion that came out prettier than specified and all this fanfare has the writers going, "Oh, no! They want him! Prepare the riot defenses!"
*Just playing devil's advocate, here. Don't kill me.*
