I wouldn't say Dorian hates Tevinter. He reminds me of Garrak from DS9. He acts against the Cardassian tyranny 'Because I love Cardassia'. Dorian wants to reform Tevinter because he loves Tevinter (the Tevinter that could be, anyway).

I didn't mean for it to seem like he did, that's why I had his name before it. ^_^

Fenris doesn't count because he was a slave. That is hardly a mark for "Tevinter is not evil".

Orana and Tallis don't count either, Orana because she is a slave and Tallis because she left it for the Qun.

Then change your criteria to "name 5 good Tevinter MAGISTERS.  You just said Tevinter people.  Dorian, Fenris, Orana, and Tallis are/were Tevinter.

Dorian and Orana would identify themselves as Tevinter. Tallis wouldn't as she is now Qunari. Fenris wouldn't as he hates Tevinter.

I'd say name 5 people who would identify themselves as Tevinter.

Do we even know 5 different Tevinter people? Magisters from the old Tevinter Imperium don't count.

Caladrius

Corypheus

Danarius

Hadriana

Senestra

Varian Ilithis

From games only, not counting comics.

Hmm, just had a shower and for some reason I came out of it really into the idea of romancing Dorian as a female... weird. Just decide what you want, brain!

*jumps on Bi!Dorian bandwagon*

Gay, straight, Bi, non-romance - this Tevinter magister is definitely a mainstay in my first party regardless.

Dorian is going to be either gay or at the VERY least, bisexual. I will bet $5!

Point out 5 good Tevinter people in authority. Dorian and people who hate Tevinter like Fenris don't count.

Well Rhy and Lambert were both trained in Tevinter and their good people. Fenris mind is still messed up so we don't know if all the people he killed where good or evil. Plus, Danarius did give him what he asked for. And, his sister could have just wanted her bother home where she knew he was somewhat safe.

Rhys was an Orlesian, White Circle trained mage whose master was on assignment in Tevinter. He does NOT count.

Rhys and Lambert never saw themselves as Tevinters.

The people Fenris and we killed were slavers, ergo they are evil.

Ever heard the saying a few bad apples spoil the bunch. Thedas is being ripped a part in the heart of the White Divine's rule. Tevinter and the Black Divine would have to be stupid not to take advantage of this. It does not make them evil it makes them smart. It is what/how they are doing it that give you the choice of good or evil. Evil is not a person. Evil is an opinion.

I have. There have been a lot of bad apples so Tevinter has a hole to dig itself out of for me to change my opinion on it.

No, it makes them evil and smart. Evil deeds are not only committed by idiots. And enslaving other people is an evil act, therefore those who commit said act are evil people.

Slavery alone makes them a condemned society. Then there's blood magic and sacrifices, and all those treats lasts since the formation of the Imperium, not since MvT war.

Well, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere in Thedas: honestly, these people are all horrible, when it comes to civil rights

When thinking about the way Thedas works (considering the not-quite-so-high fantasy setting it was meant to be), I couldn’t imagine my noble being completely fair to the elves. She sure was outraged at selling elves, but was sort of “yeah, it’s horribly bad but not a really pressing issue” when it came to the fact that they in fact are the second class citizens with almost no rights whatsoever. Status Quo is easy to accept, when you are in a relatively privileged position.

If Tevinter is anything like the late Roman Empire, lots of people would think that slavery is just another social institution and is, well, ok. I mean, most of  Fereldens think that mages should be left to live all their lives in circles and elves are not real people (Shartan, what Shartan ?) and somehow they still perceive themselves (unlike those horrible Orlesians, decadence and all ) as  fair and free people.

And that somehow makes slavery less evil? I don't see your logic here.

As a social institution: Off cause it is evil. Can I imagine a person who thinks that slavery is ok and is not evil: Sadly yes, I can. The world would have been an easier place to live in if people with horrible views were evil by default.

Well, I've yet to see a good-hearted magister living within Tevinter society, except for Maevaris, but she's an oddball. And Dorian is practically an exile. Even in this demo we are confronting Dorian's mentor, who is also a magister, and he doesn't strike me as kind person either.

Maevaris was a great character. “Everyone in Tevinter has slaves, darling” [Or something like that, can’t confirm, don’t have the text with me right now] was very sobering and seemed right, considering the fact she is a high class mage within a horribad system.

I would guess that the fact we don’t see more of this is connected to the fact that people generally have hard time role-playing [I remember lots of people saying they play as themselves in RPG],  and we as a society are past “slavery is ok” phase of human history (or at least I hope we are).

when the word slavery comes up, we think the whipping the torture, the blood rituals....  who's to say that some magisters dont practice such things and only take in live in servants with no pay (ie slaves) without any form of the bad stuff....  slavery isnt all just black, there is some grey in there too....  im not condoning it by any means, but writing off everybody who has one as evil is severely narrow minded

More likely they just don't think of it much.  Just like nobles don't think about elves. It’s just the way things are for them.

I have actually met people like my  “for Ferelden” Cousland, they might not notice it, but their own privileged upbringing made them rather blind to issues other people experiencing. They are generally fine people, but I don’t think I have enough patience to explain things to them, it never ends well, and sometimes I think we are speaking different languages.
