Don't even hint at mentioning Thane. Building hopes in log entries and twitter hints and then that absolute crud. I'll never forget that.

Thane's romance was beautiful tho

But it was like 10 minutes long...

She didn't even keep a picture of him in her cabinet where as MShepard would have a picture of Tali that he probably checks before he goes to sleep in order to get nightmares and practice combat in them lol :<

Didn't DG write Asunder? It'd only be logical if he wrote Cole for DA:I as well.

I'd put my money on Patrick Weekes as Dorian's writer tho.

EDIT: Assuming Patrick Weekes wrote any of the characters, I haven't really been following the authors much.

I think Weekes has one companion only and that was confirmed to be Iron Bull.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Dorian will work well alongside Varric? With what we know about the companions so far, it seems to me that every companion relationship could really go either way depending on the most dominant beliefs/traits that separate the two characters. But Dorian has that kind of roguish charm look about him that says to me that he and Varric would get up to some antics together.

Sort of Irrelevant but... hmm, so far the character profiles clearly shows that Cassandra - Vivienne - Iron Bull are a trio of friends. I also think that Blackwall-Sera-Varric can be another trio of friends due to their attitudes toward the civilians/poor and defenseless people. So maybe Dorian - Solas - Cole is a third such trio of friends... Hmm, I don't know... I think Varric probably won't react badly to him due to Maevaris being a magister as well...

Anyways, as far as romances go, my predictions/thoughts are:

If 6 romances:

Females: Cassandra (opposite-sex), Scribbles (bi), Sera (same-sex)

Males: Cullen (opposite-sex), Iron Bull (bi), Dorian (same-sex but with a very minimal chance that he'll be replaced with either Solas or Blackwall)

If 8 romances:

Females: Cassandra (opposite-sex), Vivienne (bi), Scribbles (bi), Sera (same-sex)

Males: Cullen (opposite-sex), Iron Bull (bi), Solas (bi), Dorian (same-sex)

Edited to add that Cassandra and Cullen are confirmed, but we don't know wether they are bi or straight, and Sera is confirmed as same-sex option for femquisitors. There's some chance that Cass is bi... I don't know...

Edit 2: What do you guys think about "Race Restrictions"? I think Iron Bull would be restricted to Humans and Qunari. I don't know about Dorian... Really hope Cass is available for Humans and Dwarves...

I would've preferred with they stayed with EVERYONE IS BI but wrote the f/m, m/m, and f/f romances for each character differently. Cuz then you could play "In THIS AU with a FemQunari mage quisitor... suddenly Varric liked horns!"

that's a cool idea but that would be harder to implement, especially with race specific romances too. they'd make it easier on themselves and for all their fans to write all the romances like they were blind, no gender pronouns or calling out of races or nothing

but i also see how they'd want to address how sexual diverse thedas is so hopefully they'll do it well

Well, if they didn't have race gating that wouldn't be an issue.

There were some people who complained about the everyone is bi solution, and since Mass Effect 3 had s/s-only options, then DA couldn't stay far behind. Race restrictions (and gender restrictions to some extent) are there, however, to cut down some work for the animators and cinematic designers. I think Allan explained it perfectly (in Sera's thread I think). Without playable races and with 4 romance options and 2 genders for Hawke, it were only 8 animation variation per each romance scene. With 4 playable races, 2 genders and quite possibly 6 romance options, we get like 48 animation variation per each romance scene (64 if we have 8 options). As Allan put it, if each animation took one day for a dev to finish, and each romance scene had only one animation/scene, that would be at least 48 (64) days of work for the animators. And romances aren't even that popular outside of BSN...

There doesn't have to be 48 unique romance animations in total. In DAO and DA2, many of the same animation sequences were shared between all the different romances, in DAO's case even across races. But I digress, I get what they were saying with the issue of production. I guess only time will tell after the game is released what they were intending with gender and race specific romances.

I never romanced Thane (as I have almost never completed a single female or renegade playthrough in Mass Effect) but that scene made me bawl like no tomorrow when I saw it on my Shepard.

Pretty sure it's in the top 5 death scenes in any video game ever.

Since it seems that the companions/advisers have their own specific models (they vary in height and build) rather than sharing it with the other character models of the same race/gender combination, then it seems that they still have to adjust the animations to avoid awkward clippings.

Personally, though I think that for example a Qunari/Dwarf romance scene can be all kinds of awkward... And I have a bit of a hard time imagining Cassandra or Cullen romancing a Qunari...

But you're right. We'll know after the game comes out.

ROFL!!! They have to take special care with The Mustache ™!

(Or maybe it'll go like this:

Inquisitor: C'mere you sexy bastard! *makes kissy faces*

Dorian: Oh, give me a moment! *removes 'stache carefully*

Inquisitor: jaw+drop.jpg

Inquisitor:  )

Hmm, I'm sort of convinced he's s/s and either Iron Bull or Solas is the bi option... But still, don't let me hold you back!!! :)

Well, if they didn't have race gating that wouldn't be an issue.

That actually was part of the issue, I think, because they'd have to reanimate the same scene eight different times and ways.

By doing it the way they did, they opened up more characters for romance. So while it is unfortunate that the characters are race/gender locked, at least this way you can still try their romance content via a new playthrough, rather than that character's romance be cut entirely.

That is how I am chosing to see it too. I still would prefer if there was a difference in the writing depending on the genders involved. Like Kaidan's admission of attraction to a maleShep being different from a Femshep in ME3... it was a nice touch,

I hope he's available to all the races though! I'd like to role play a gay dwarf this time!

(Hey, I had a thought! What if the straight/gay romances are available to all the races while the bi romances are available to two races each (while covering all four races between them)?! That way, there'd be an equal number of 4 animations per each romance scene for all 6/8 LIs! That'd be nice.)

I'm going to go ahead and stroke my chin at that. I hope Dorian will be bi; I'd like to romance him in my first playthrough but I haven't decided on a first inquisitor yet. Other than mage.

Same, goodness. I normally play male PCs, but I do like to role female every now and again. So here's hoping he's an LI, at least.

Ah, the first playthrough! I suppose we all just have to wait until further info is revealed. David Gaider said that there's a chart for the romance options and that the marketing department might (emphasize on might) release it to the public. That'll be helpful!

It honestly doesn't make much of a difference to me if he's s/s or bi. I just hope all the race/gender combinations get at least one choice of LI for their preferred gender. It'll suck if they go: Oh you're a Dwarf, so you can only romance the girls, or oh you're a Qunari, so you can only be straight.

I suggested he's s/s because Iron Bull strikes me as bi. And should Solas be s/s, then both of our elven companions would be gay/lesbian, which is a bit improbable. Cullen seems to be straight. And Blackwall has a really slim chance of being LI. So Dorian is the more likely one.
