I meant to add if into that post, it still could be 2/4/2

I doubt they'll make both NPCs straight and both elves gay

Why not? In ME3, both NPCs were gay, so why not the other way around?

Straight romances aren't inherently more important than gay/bi ones.

As for Sera and Solas both being gay, again, why not? If they cared about being equal and fair, Sera would be Bi. Seeing as how she's the only female elf. She isn't. As it stands, male players don't even have an elf LI.

Because of all the complaints having said NPCs all be homosexual generated may dissuade them from doing something similar again. If there is 2/4/2, I almost guarantee 2 of the bisexual options will be the NPCs so everyone gets equal options of at least 1 companion and 1 NPC that they will like.

As for straight males having no non-human LIs, I agree that that is unfair.

I'm thinking 2/3/2, with 2 bisexual males who are race-gated (Iron Bull for qunari, elves, and humans, Varric for dwarves) and one bisexual female who is probably Viv or Scribbles. Then Cassandra and Cullen are straight, and Sera and Dorian are gay.

Or I could be completely wrong. I still think Dorian's m/m, though.

Hmmm if he is the m/m choice I wonder what my first male inquisitor should be (Presuming he's not race gated). Thinking qunari or elf but probably elf since I'll probably have already done an fqunari run

Having Iron Bull only available for qunari or Varric for dwarves seems incredibly, in my opinion. "Race-gating" an LI so that only one of the four races can romance them seems like an extraordinary waste of money.

If race restrictions are there at all, surely they'd only block off one race out of the four - otherwise investing the time and money for the romance content, animations, dialogue etc seems like a massive budget spent for very little return. I'm not sure that's what they even meant by race gates, really.

My predictions are;

Dorian - Gay

Iron Bull - Bi

Cullen - Straight

And the ladies:

Cassandra - Straight

Sera - Lesbian

Scribbles - Bi

I'm likely entirely off. I have no idea. But since I want to remain slightly on-topic, I'm just hoping that Dorian is an option in general. If not, well, that's okay. Still excited to have him in my Inquisitor's party as a bamf mage-bro.

Race gating actually reduces potential cost. The height disparity between some of the races actually means that certain scenes may have to be completely reanimated for that race. There isn't much if any difference in height between humans and elves, but to animate a character interacting with a qunari or dwarf is perhaps twice as much work/cost/zots/etc

maybe what seems to us like race-gating could just be the relevant parts of the team biting off more than they could chew, animation-wise?? idk

My predictions are;

Scribbles - Bi

Very much this. It's why I think if, say, Iron Bull is an LI, he'd be race-gated to only vashoth and humans.

The way that Allan Shamalamanamanan (sorry Allan, your name intimidates me) described it was that the animation team only had enough resources/time to reanimate a scene x-amount of times. And rather than cut a romance entirely, it becomes race-gated so that the content can be accessed, if only via a different playthrough.

Which I'm totally cool with. I have come to terms with my dude vashoth inquisitor possibly being alone, but hey, that's just another reason to try a character that I normally wouldn't.

If Dorian ends up race-gated/gender-gated/fabulous-mustache-gated, then I'll just roll a new playthrough.

yah. I guess this kind of meta, background stuff is the kind of thing we can't really ever know but I doubt race gating happens because they thought it'd be entertaining if, say, cullen was racist.

and 'it had to happen this way or it couldn't happen at all' may very well be the case

I suppose it makes sense if the animation budget is lower, but there's a point at which the cost to produce this content is surely too high for the number of people who would ever actually see it.

Like, in Origins the number of players who picked a human was... over 80%? If I remember correctly.

Making IB only available to qunari males and females (let alone just qunari males) means all that extra work in cinematics, dialogue, localisation etc is only going towards a miniscule fraction of the player-base, unless everyone unexpectedly wants to play a qunari.

Ditto with Varric and dwarves - I don't think he'll be an LI at all, but how does it make sense that they'd make all the extra content for such a small outcome?

I just can't see them "gating" the characters so that only one race can romance them, it seems like a poor use of money and time even in a game with the scope and apparent depth as DA:I.

i think the cost of people not seeing certain content is an already accepted cost, what with there apparently being non-romance related race gated content already. Where was it, at PAX that somebody suggested you might not even be able to finish a quest as a qunari?

decision people: "we want an iron bull romance"

cinematics: "it'll take a day to do each race/gender variant, which is 8 days. We only have 4 days."

dp: "that'll have to do."

c: "if we get rid of the varric dwarf-only romance we can do the remaining bull scenes"

dp: "no, we would rather have 2 different romances with a few restrictions each than one romance available to all races."

c: "ok, we'll do that"

also consider that an option available to only one race would differentiate playthroughs and may lead people to playing multiple times/different ways, which is good for the game overall

Yeah, I can see *a few restrictions* on each, but not to the point of having romances that are just open to one Inquisitor race. That seems like a bridge too far.

(And unless they're deliberately trying not to do so, I would expect humans to have the most options overall - since that is, inevitably, what the majority of people will spend their single playthrough using.)

I don't think this matters much in Dorian's case, because I hardly think they'd lock humans out of romancing him if he is indeed an option.

I see Iron Bull not available to Dwarves and Varric not available to Qunari. Humans and Elves will have access to both.
