I do remember reading somewhere, though, that mages with healing spells can now only heal themselves.

Don't take my word for it because I honestly don't remember the source, but it's part of the way they're changing the healing and health system - it makes no sense if any mage can go around healing everybody, given that they're already limiting health potions and disabling automatic health recovery to make battles more strategic.

(Particularly if mages' healing spells come out of a mana pool, and if mana regenerates infinitely...)

Well, I'm not sure how I'd feel about that if true. On one hand it would seem to completely negate the point of healing mages, as well as violate some story.

On the other hand, if healing mages are useless I wouldn't feel compelled to bring one along for every trip. Would give me some more freedom in party customization, I suppose.

I think the emphasis was to neutralise the idea of a mage being able to heal everybody an infinite amount of times from a pool of mana that always replenishes after battle.

If that was still the case like in Origins and DA2, there'd be no point to all the other changes in the health system (no health regeneration and potions being rarer) because there'd always be infinite healing from a mage companion.

On the one hand, a line in one of the comics mentioned an exiled magister in the Anderfels (I think?) who had experience with healing magic.

But on the other, DHMG looks very... militaristic. And if he uses a sword, I'd have him pegged as an arcane warrior more than a healer.

That reminds me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but he kind of reminds me of a mid 20th century Foreign Legion soldier.

He should wear one of these hats.

In any case, Dragon Age should have it's share of funny hats anyhow.

Yeah in "Until We Sleep," Mae mentions rumors about a Dalish and a Magister exiled in the Anderfels, able to "graft spirit onto flesh and restore life."

A magister healer is quite amusingly subversive, even more so if it seems contrary to his martial appearance.

Though I think that line must have been in Until We Sleep for a reason (it's pretty specific, and how many exiled magisters are there?), I'm not entirely sold on DHMG being that healer character. It's a really interesting concept and I don't mind either way really, but none of the art screams healer to me.

I feel like if he is a mage and if the concept art from the survey is the same person as DHMG in the War Room, the sword on his back has to be there on purpose... unless all magisters carry swords, or something.

Well if DHMG is Dorian Pavus from the survey, it does say that  "Dorian may wield the power of the magisters, but he delights in not being what you would expect." So being a magister specialised in healing while odd, could fit with his character rather nicely.

But I would agree that he looks nothing like a healer.

I updated the OP to reflect that the party is now 3 warriors/rogues/mages, which means DHMG could be (probably is?) the third mage.

The evidence for him being Dorian is pretty promising, but I'm not confident enough to assume it yet.

Well, we shouldn't forget that the survey art is really old in game development terms. A lot can change. And concept art is always more of a "let's try this" thing; once you see it as a model or in game, there's usually a lot to reconsider.

Well as you said a Tevinter healer would be rather subversive, but even more so would be a healer arcane warrior, on one hand he's the guy who will heal your cuts and aches, but he's also the guy who will jump into the fray sword in hand cutting down foes left and right. I want to see companions be a bit more unique class wise than standard three.

I know a lot of people would like to see a return of DAO companion class customization but DA2's unique specializations were pretty great and helped to reinforce each companions personality and style. It would be nice to have both though. Each could have their own specialization but you can ignore that and go another route if you so choose.

That's true. We've seen multiple concept art appearances for some companions, and in Solas' case his outfit that he's wearing in a lot of recent screenshots looks nothing like the fur robes he has on in some art.

I think the staff is quite cool and iconic, so I hope they keep that (at least for his starting weapon I guess?).

Re-quoting because this is still pretty badass.

I really hope Dorian is a LI for m/m pairings. He's the only likely companion I can really see myself getting into now. I liked Cullen, but I'm not into NPC romances and I feel like being an NPC makes him more likely to be straight, anyway. Right now, I'm basically putting all my chips on Mr. Mustache.

(I realize lots of assumptions in what I just said.)

Well, it doesn't bother me any if he's bisexual. I'm still thinking there's a decent chance the main 4 LIs will be bisexual and Cullen will be a questionable extra, like Sebastian. If it's the 2/2/2 split, then it's just as well to me if he's the bisexual interest as the homosexual one.

I'm hoping he's an LI for everyone too. Though if he was m/m only, I'd have  to make a male Inquisitor sooner rather than later, simply to experience the wonderful moustache lovin'. The other potential male companions seem interesting, but I'm not as bothered about romancing them.
And considering that Vivienne's chances of being an LI feel slim compared to Sera's, DHMG is my number one choice.

With the new info about have an equal distribution of companion classes, DHMG has a 99.9 percent chance of being a mage if he really is a companion ^_^

Just for clarification, when I said I hoped he was an m/m pairing, I didn't mean EXCLUSIVELY. I'm for everyone be available to everyone, if possible.

Fair enough. I'd want him to be for both though :( I tend to go for the same LIs on both my female and male charas if it's possible (and I actually like the LI).

Edit: Just read yours XD LOL same then <3

The history of another famous literary Dorian, that character's author, and the general vibe I'm getting from the description makes him an overwhelmingly likely m/m option, in my opinion.

If they plan to do 2/2/2 (which is a big if, and one for which we have no evidence at this point) I'd put my money on him being exclusively m/m.

If they don't, I'd eat my hat if Dorian is exclusively straight.
