Oh, that's interesting. Altus is a family name, then?
No, it's a label for all the mages from an ancient mage family.

Nah, it's like a class system. Like middle class or lower class.
Altus are the highest of the high. They rank at the top of Tevinter society. They can trace their roots back to the Dreamers of old, and they also tend to be the strongest of mages in the Imperium.
Not necessarily. The Altus Dreamers existed long before that group of magisters set foot in the Fade, though they were of the same ilk.
They are still family.
Hmm, I wonder how much of his wanting to restore Tevinter's honor is him trying to restore the honor of his family, thinking that saving the world from the Feade Breaches may wash away the stain that was his ancestor doing the same thing and bringing the Darkspawn to Thedas.
Give it time. The stage they're in right now is when they start going in and really working on the graphics (amongst other things), so textures and appearances still have a long way to go.
I hope so, but all these images and vids, and the fact that we're close to launch, make me highly doubt that anything significant will happen.

Or...his family had no ties to that one group of magisters and wishes to simply wash away the stigma of Tevinter "evilness".
Just because he was an Altus doesn't mean he is in any way related to the magisters that became darkspawn.

Family to Corpheus?
Only in so much that you're family to an ancient country leader. Atlus are descended from Dreamers, plural not singular. There would be multiple bloodlines, of which Corpheus could only be part of a fraction.

I think it would be a more interesting story if he was though.
Pavus means peacock right? The bird which symbolizes beauty. I wonder if the original Pavus Dreamer was speaking with Urthemiel...

I see. So what about the part of "Pavus", then? Is that a family name, or is that also a class?
He looks really great and his outfit is stunning. I love his intense gaze in this pic. I hope my mage inquisitor can steal some of his outfils or find some in the game. I'm there to save the world from chaos, but to look dashing too.
He is so handsome ![]()

Must hold back tears. ![]()
So. Initial thoughts to Dorian.
Seems nice. Seems great, even. A well-intentioned Tevinter dissident who is opposed to Tevinter practices, wants to redeem it, and is charming and personable? No apparent flaws? Almost too good to be true.
Which, in the DA setting, means it probably is. He's going to have character development, and probably character flaws, that won't be apparent from this first impression.
Which leaves the question of... what will they be? Is his nice-guy act just an act for cunning and manipulative things? Doubt it. Insufferable arrogance? Probably not.
Not quite agreeing what the sins of Tevinter are that need fixing? Not apologizing or dissenting from the idea of mageocracy? Or paternalistic slavery? Or the old history with elves?
I doubt it would be all of these, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if people find that Dorian isn't the antithesis of Tevinter that people will likely want him to be. What he considers right and wrong about it, and what the cast feels is right and wrong about it, can certainly be changed by his upbringing's perspective and privilege.
I see. So what about the part of "Pavus", then? Is that a family name, or is that also a class?

Family name.
The other classes are Soporati and Laetens, as well as Liberati.
Why the hell can't I like your post, Dean?
Edit: Nvm, don't know what happened.

Wow. Great! I can't wait to meet him, he's going to be a very interesting person. Thank you for the Tevinter history lesson. ![]()

No prob. Check this out if you want to learn more

I also think that the "social outcast" thing is not interesting in the slightest.
You see, every time we saw someone from Tevinter in the past,be it magisters or slavers,it felt to me like they knew they're supposed to be the "Evil Nation" in a fantasy-storyline and just revel in it,
Wouldnt it have been much more compelling if Dorian was a Tevinter magister who, while still being a good, sociable, and somewhat nice person who cares about the greater good enough to fight for the Inquisition, also honestly believes that the Tevinter society is actually doing the right thing?
So instead of stuff like:
Inquisitor:I think Tevinter is morally bancrupt.
Dorian :Yeah,tell me about it.
he would actually try to argue with you about it,not unlike Sten in Origins.
But thats just me,you guys seem to like it the way it is,so im content either way.^^
Hello Dorian thread! Don't think I've posted in here yet. He looks completely awesome ![]()
This has probably been covered earlier in this topic, but: looking at the mage specialisations available, and assuming (possibly incorrectly) that companions don't have unique specialisations, if Vivienne is the Knight-Enchanter and Solas is the Rift Mage (another assumption, I'm just guessing here by their backgrounds)....would that make Dorian the necromancer?
And if so, chances he's the exiled necromancer Mae mentioned way back in the comics?
He looks super swish and I feel like we're going to get on well, but I'm ever so curious to find out what the skeletons in his particular closet are ![]()
Can't say those moustache textures look pretty good (they look drawn on with eyeliner which is he wearing or is it just me hahah), but FINALLY! WOO!
Ooh, he's fascinating
The moustache tho. It looks like somebody drew it in Paint XD
Sad to say I kind of agree. Still, super-stoked for the upcoming interview
.
I hope he's not a self-hating Tevinter. Internalized tevinterphobia is never healthy, even though Tevinters are basically garbage monsters.

No, I totally agree. The idea of Dorian's dissent being a moral positive is only true in so much that we assume Tevinter is an absolute negative. Which, as much as the games have tried to paint it as and in many objective ways Tevinter is an abhorrent state... well, we've also been from places with very limited, and highly biased, exposure to Tevinter.
The exiled magister was an healer, not a Necromancer.
One could argue that they are the same sides of a different coin. Necromancy involves the manipulation of life energy, of animation, of binding dead souls to the mortal plane. Mae said that this healer grafted spirits onto people to heal them.

Blah, my Dark Horse reader won't load so I can't check the wording, but I seem to remember leaving the book with the impression that the person being talked about could have potentially "healed" Maric by uh, unconventional means rather than the usual.
EDIT: It loaded! Yeah, she talks about him being able to "graft spirit onto flesh and restore life", which sounds like a pretty way of saying necromancy to me.
