I'm torn on Cullen, because a lot of women didn't want their exclusive as an NPC in the old romance thread, but then he's very popular. He's always had the hugest following by far. I hope at least most straight females will be happy with their character, whoever it is.

See Cullen's the character I'd feel I'd be the least disappointed with so I'm going for that. Him being an NPC is not preferred but at this point lesser evil to me.

Though I will romance Dorian so hard on my 3rd Quizzy. <3

Yay~ Friends.

Oh I can't wait. My necromancer Inquisitory will be the equivalent of Scumbag Steve in Dorian's eyes.

More on Topic;

Is it odd I'm looking forward to Dorian more now that I know he's exclusively Gay? All the companions have seemed awesome to me but now...Just more excitement for Dorian. He's getting close to my Varric&Vivienne scale of excitement but not right there.

YES. I wonder what insults he and Vivi will come up for with for my Quizzy. It should be fabulous at least ~

Not to me. I got more excited about IB once seeing he was probably a bi LI :P

I think Allan is right when he said a lot of the maturity here is because everyone saw how bad the Sera situation got so would rather not repeat it. If Dorian was announced before Sera, I see the same thing that happened with her happening with him.

Wow, I just realised Sheryl Chee was running one heck of a misdirection campaign by coming into this thread and liking all the fanart. I was convinced she was the writer!

Someone once said she likes to sow chaos, but only now do I realise how true those words were, and the sheer audacity of her plans.

Wait, so my Inquisitors can go dashing through Thedas with Dorian (whether hand in hand or not)? My little heart is very excited about that.

There was also a lot more "Dorian is gay" calls than Sera, so people were somewhat prepared for it.

And now we're left with Solas. NEXT WEEK FOLKS.

By the by, how, HOW, did we all know Dorian was gay before we even had the name? :P.

And if anyone has seen the Sera character kit, it's worth noting (everywhere), that the seem to have remembered quivers. So no more magic arrows made of hair and contention.

I wonder if they'll do specializations like in DA:O and Dorian can teach you necromancy?

That's true too. With Sera being the only non-human female, a lot more were thinking she would be bi or straight.

Hmm, idk abt that. I don't think it has anything to do w/what happened w/Sera.

I think it has more to do w/women being accustomed to having to take the hits on the chin and just dealing with it.

IMHO, ofc.

Okay, I just reread the interview, and technically DG only announced Dorian is gay, not that he is an LI (although I'm sure he is). So we're in an Iron Bull situation here (he'll bed anything he won't break, not exactly confirmation).

I'm kinda sad he's gay from a personal perspective as I am uncomfortable with gay romances and hence will miss out on it but I'm sure Gaider had good reason.

I'll still take him along for my 1st play through with a Femquiz and pursue a friendship

The way people reacted to Sera reminded me of spoiled children throwing a tantrum. Many straight male gamers sure are used to getting what they want I guess. xP And in here I'm only seeing celebration and congratulation... really shows how people gain a mature stance on things when they understand and can empathize with eachother better.

I didn't read too much of the Sera thread so don't know all the fallout/vitrol.

Could part of the male wrath *potentially* be that the ONLY non-human female option turned out to be lesbian? Plus, if you looked at it from sheer numbers, there were only 4 female potential LI options to even start with, compared to 8 male potential LI options. From that point of view they really seemed to get the short end of the stick....especially after it was confirmed Leliana was not a LI. That dropped them down to 3. And then to 2 once it was confirmed Sera was lesbian. At least from the potential male LI pool, 8 is more to work with, there is the impression of inequality (which they are probably not used to). (giving benefit of the doubt here)

And from a straight female perspective...

We possibly have Solas, Cullen, Varric, IB, Blackwall to chose from.* (with me thinking that Varric and Blackwall probably wont be romances)

* I am not including Cole in that list, the thought squicks me out.

None of them seem to be as cool as Dorian (which is fine, I had already planned if he was a LI and m/m I would be playing male characters). Plus from companions....the straight female player potentially gets 1 human companion to chose from, and if Blackwall isn't a romance....the straight female player gets NO human companion. (romance an NPC? Not as fun to me if you can't schlep them around with you). Which would balance out the guys geting no non-humans I guess

I'm also glad that BW is giving characters *set* sexualities, instead of 'player-sexual' (although I liked that also).

Didn't you hear--they're announcing more news on every OTHER minor character now. Still no Solus.

I kid, I'm really disappointed theres no Solas news to be honest. I really want to hear about him

Yes. I really liked how in DA:2 Aveline and the others who had problems with Hawke pretty much trash talked them while they walked around, it was so amusing.

O: Could we be lucky to have our first qunari and first dwarf LI in DA:I ? -snickers- I can dream

I'm a girl and I couldn't be more delighted that he's gay, personally. I think it is absolutely fantastic that such an interesting and complicated sounding character is gay, and from what I hear the first Bioware companion character who is, and I am praying with all my might that he's also a romance option because I am already getting invested in a potentially nonexistent relationship between him and my Inquisitor. Honestly, if he were a bi romance I wouldn't have romanced him with a girl anyway, and if he were straight I'd just be mad. Oh man, I'm just so glad that him and Sera are both queer and s/s exclusive too because they're among my faves so far  And hearing that he has a snarky friendship with VIvienne is also a delight! Intrigued by what his relationship with Iron Bull might be like, as well. The entire interview is a very good read, the more I heard about Dorian the more I can't wait to meet him. Also-- he's confirmed as our local Necromancer, basically? Interesting. There is definitely a story behind that. I mean, unless he just has weird tastes. That's possible too.

I agree for the most part with what you said, although I think that the other nations branding Tevinter as the "Big Bad" are kind of being hypocritical.

Let's take a look at Orlais and Ferelden.

  • Racism is endemic in both.
  • Apostate mages are summarily put to death because they might fall prey to a demon some day.
  • Slavery still exists in both Orlais and Ferelden, albeit without governmental sanction.
  • The Orlesian aristocracy spends most of their time politicking, backstabbing, and playing the "Grand Game."
  • There is little to no social mobility in Orlais. See WoT pg. 60, "Many believe Orlais is a kind of meritocracy. In reality, the faint hope of achieving great things is enough to keep the poor preoccupied and the rich in power."
  • The Chantry essentially committed genocide against the elves after they attacked Red Crossing, kicking them out of the Dales and creating the Elvish "diaspora" that we have today.

Sure, Tevinter needs some significant reforms. I don't think the other nations in Thedas, however, are in a position to judge.

Oh, yes, I definitely agree that most of the rest of Thedas is very very far from being a shining example of morality and rightness. And there is a lot of hypocrisy on their parts for painting themselves as being Good and Tevinter as Bad. But on the other hand, everything we know about Tevinter puts it on a level of corruption and fucked up ness that I don't think anyone can compare too and a reform of it can only be a very long, arduous process. (The narrative of each game so far obviously wants to paint it as a Big Bad nation just as the rest of Thedas does, for the record. And it's not unsuccessful, either... I consider it a very questionable choice, personally, on a writer level to introduce mages as an explicitly pressed group and then have that same group run an empire based on slavery where they are the ones in power oppressing others. But that's, like, a slightly more meta-related discussion for another time and not entirely Dorian related.)

But could part of the male wrath be possibly *partly* due to the fact that the ONLY non-human female character in the line-up of 12 is gay?

I probably wouldn't steer the discussion towards discussing why the viritrol was bad with the Sera discussion and not this one.  Get the feeling that discussion in particular could get a bit...heated and viritrolic at worst.

At least with Dorian's reveal, we know Solas will almost certainly be next. He's the last companion to get a reveal in this way.

Yes that was always funny. "Killer." "how...original."

I hope so :P

Also picking the worst outfit for the ball and watching Dorian freak out. I can not wait to do this. Those meltdowns will be so hilarious :D

Na, if it worked that way Dorian would have been revealed sooner. Most likely he is more plot important.

If only the Sera thread was just as mature like this one.... *wipes tears*

It was so painful for me, as a lesbian, to see such hateful/ignorant comments.

Yeah, my bad for even bringing it up. I was just a bit proud of my fellow female gamers on here I guess. x3 I really like the community/friendship feel of this place in general.
