Sorry but "Anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden," sure sounds like rejection of his sexuality to me. If his sexuality is deviant and shameful, then I doubt they would approve of him having sex with slaves, even if it was behind closed doors. This sounds far more like the attitude displayed in some parts of our world, then in a place where it was formerly said to be regarded as simply "odd". If this was the attitude in Tevinter, then it has been like that for a long time and so should have been reflected in the lore. In Ancient Greece men were expected to marry and have kids but it was also considered normal and even encouraged for men to have relationships with men. A person can rebel against arranged marriages without being described as "deviant". It is as though in addition to slavery, blood magic and other things for which we should despise Tevinter, alone among the nations of Thedas they are now being portrayed as homophobic as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing a mage character coming from the upper echelons of society. I mean possessing real power, not cleverly tricking people into giving them some like Vivienne. I want his view on the Circle System, as an establishment that has never truly affected him.
This.My first Inquisitor will be extremely cynical and scarred by life and he'll probably make an hobby of proving how Dorian's idealism is impossible to apply to the real world while, at the same time, cheering him 100% all the way.
If the game allows it, that's how I intend to play. My Inquisitor will view Dorian as a younger, mage and idealist version of himself.

I don't have the book, but I believe in "World of Thedas" it was stated that Tevinter didn't mind same-sex couplings so long as they were between master and slave. Tevinter's definition of "deviancy'" seems to be a little different from what we consider it to be.

Does this mean Dorian is a LI?
Not confirmed but very likely.
Wondering if "spells involving the control of spirit and the dead" means necromancer. It does, right?

Keep reading:
"In Tevinter, it is considered selfish and deviant behavior amongs nobles, but actively encouraged with favored slaves."
World of Thedas page 72. I own the book.

There have been cultures in our actual history where men raping male slaves was totally acceptable, but consensual relationships between free men was forbidden. It's not a stretch at all.

Context, my friend.
"In Tevinter, it is considered selfish and deviant behavior amongst nobles, but actively encouraged with favored slaves."
Magic is hereditary. Magisters in Tevinter are expected to marry for reasons of bloodline continuation, strengthening the magical talent with each generation. Much like with real world nobility, in the past, marriages were political and affairs were for passion and love (with some notable exceptions). Marriages were public, affairs less so (with some notable exceptions). Affairs of any kind were tolerated, but marriage was all but required. Use the affairs to rid yourself of the base urges and to satisfy emotional needs, then do your duty and produce proper offspring.
Edit: Ack, ninja'd.

Does this mean Dorian is a LI?
It is known that DG wrote 2 characters. It is also known that he wrote 2 romances. Since it is highly unlikely that he was writing a romance for someone else's character, put 2 plus 2 - and get Cass and Dorian as sure LI

Dorian probably doesn't even keep slaves.
THE SCANDAL!
He might have had slaves before he really started to consider what being a slave owner meant. I bet there was a time where he considered himself quite a good man merely for treating the people he owned well. Social pariah's can grow into their roles after all. I do wonder what would have happened to any slaves he owned after his rebellious streak started showing. Did he set them free? Smuggle them out of the country? Send them to homes with good masters?

Huh.. I'd think with their versatility all Mage parties would be the easiest to pull off
Unless someone gets too close and starts hitting them with sticks. Also, I'm very talented at noobing. Very.
Anyway, do you guys n' gals think he's going to be little cynical and not very visibly idealistic? Like being all snark and sassy about this whole corruption in Tevinter business(you know, seeing the problem, knowing that something needs to be done and trying to change it but skipping the big righteous speeches part).

This is very unlikely because, since he is most likely an LI, players are meant to like but what if Dorian is actually in favor of most of what Tevinter does? Maybe he fully believes mages are the betters of normal people and thus, more fit to rule and what he really stands against is things like imperialism and Magisters interfering in the affairs of other nations like the one in the demo.

Just read his Q&A and I am loving how Dorian is turning out so far (even though my LadyInquisitor will be permanently friend-zoned
). He has quickly joined Vivienne, Cole and Iron Bull as the characters I most want to meet. Cannot wait to hear the banter between him and Viv. The sass will be lethal.

My lady inquisitors are going to be very sad (*I* am going to be SUPER sad if my options are stupid Cullen and stupid Solas) but as long as he's not being also being all not romanceable at all, I can cope. ![]()
Looking forward to him and Vivienne together for sure. ![]()

I don't care if he's pro magister do long a he's anti slavery and anti murder. I mean no one else we run into has a serious problem with people being more fit to rule because One of their traceable ancestors happened to conquer an area of land.

I keep imagining Dorian being that guy who treated his slaves like friends, or like family? Like that alone could be a source of ridicule from other Magisters. "I heard that he lets them eat at the same table as him." "Oh, how disgusting! Doesn't he know elves could carry horrible diseases?" "Can you believe that the Pavus boy walks to market with his slave? He was carrying her basket the last time!" "I know! I asked him what he thought he was doing, and he just told me that her arms were getting tired. Like it was the most normal thing in the world!" "Something is wrong with that young man..."

Unless Blackwall ends up being an LI (which I doubt), then my first playthrough will be with a male inquisitor ready to romance that moustache off him 8D. So happy~ ![]()
Edit: Okay I know the romance part hasn't been confirmed but...come on now. That'd just be cruel.
