No, I will continue to point it out because its foolish regardless of the representation, positive or negative, in this medium to behave like this.

What's foolish is putting people down for daring to be happy about something.

Less arguing, more Dorian love.  How about that mustache?

It matters because gay gamers exist and we enjoy seeing ourselves in our entertainment.

Hell, Zevran and Leliana also count in this, if were keeping track. And yea, bisexuals count too. Just saying.

No, bisexuals don't 'count' as gay characters just like they don't 'count' as straight characters. Bisexuals are bisexuals.

I have always hoped for Dorian to be the gay option since we need a good one and not a throwaway option like Steve. A fully flesh out romance. David Gaider has often written really good romanceable characters like Fenris and Alistair. I'm excited that not only Dorian, the one I find the most attractive, is the gay option but also an option being written by David Gaider. I just can't contain all the emotions right now.

Are you saying that the gay people that are excited by this are wrong for feeling happy?  Many of them are saying it matters.

Hell, Zevran and Leliana also count in this, if were keeping track. And yea, bisexuals count too. Just saying.

Absolutely.  I support representation in all its forms.  That said, I don't believe it's the same to point "Well there are bisexuals and they count" when many gay people have been telling me otherwise.

I don't give a **** if he is the first or not. Making a big deal out of this is kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Good that it's happened, but ridiculous.

Unfortunately a lot of people do care.  It sort of seems to lend validation that a decent number of people do find it important.

I understand it more than you realize, token representation via one character at this point is nothing.

If you're implying that Dorian is nothing more than "token representation" then that's unfortunately.  Hopefully we can prove you wrong.

Whether it's nothing to you or it's something, that's no reason to criticize other people's celebration.
Opinions are fine. Opinions are great. So is discussion. But seemingly hostile or inflammatory language is what leads to flame wars and closed threads.
And that makes no one happy.

I don't know anyone is even surprised. To me, it was obvious. Too much resemblance to Freddie Mercury. ;)

*INTERNAL SCREAMING*

Dorian: Mother, where's Leto? I haven't seen him since I got back from my study trip with Master Alexius. Is he at market, or...?

Dorian's Mum: Leto? Oh, yes, the elven boy that you liked so much. I forgot to tell you, dear, we did some trading while you were away. Leto, his mother, and his sister were given to Danarius' care in return for a new set of very skilled kitchen slaves. You're going to love  Miriam's meat pies, they are simply to die for. She's from Ferelden, you see, and she got the recipe when...

Dorian: Traded!? But... how could you do something like that?! Leto was my friend!

DM: *laughs* Leto wasn't your friend, my dear, he was your slave. You'll find a new favorite in no time. In fact, there is an adorable young elven boy, around your age, among our new acquisitions! You can take a look at him if you'd like, he's sure to be in the kitchen!

Dorian: *clenches fists* How can you say something like that, mother?! Leto wasn't a rug! I can't just replace  him!

DM: *clicks tongue sympathetically and smooths back Dorian's hair* Oh, my darling, you are so young. You will learn not to become so attached to them with time. You'll understand when you have your own household to run.

Dorian: *draws back* I... I'm going to my room. I have... I have reading to do. *leaves quickly*

DM: *calls after him* Alright, darling! Don't forget we're having Alexius and his son over for supper tonight! I know how you lose track of time when you're studying!

Well great now you've encouraged me! I just have to write a follow up to this!

Dorian: Err... Varric...

Varric: Yes Tevinter?

Dorian: Is it really true what they say, that you had eyes and ears all over Kirkwall, and knew just about everything that happened there before the mage rebellion?

Varric: Ha! You could say that. Why would you like to know Tevinter? Trying to track someone down? An ex-lover perhaps? Or maybe some old business partner that failed to live up to their end of the bargain?

Dorian: Not exactly...I'm actually looking for Magister. Danaerius was his name. He vanished into thin air a couple years ago, his last known location was Kirkwall.

Varric: Hmmm... I might know something. Depends though, why are you looking for him?

Dorian: I'm not exactly looking for him, it's one of his slaves... Leto. There was no sign of him when they cleared out his estate and none the records show any sign that he'd been sold...it seems likely that he's with Danaerius then, wherever he is. Either that or he used him for... no he's got to be with Danaerius.

Varric: Leto? Hmmm...

Dorian: Hmmm?

Varric: Sounds like you've got thousands of elvish slaves where you come from. What's so important about this one?

Dorian: Nothing in particular, I suppose you could call him a... friend.

Varric: A friend

Dorian: Yes a friend. We grew up together if you must know. Now do you know anything or not? If I had wanted an interrogation I would have gone through the Inquisition's official channels.

Varric: sighs Yes I do know something.

Dorian: What is it? Tell me! Do you know where Leto is?

Varric:  Not exactly, but I've got a couple ideas. I not so sure I should tell them to you though.

Dorian: Why not? Why offer me this small shred of hope that I might see him again, and then yank it away from me at the last second.

Varric:  I've got a sneaking suspicion that Leto's changed quite a bit from when you knew him. You might not like the way he is now. It might be best if you let your memories of him remain just that, memories.

Don't think I quite grasped the voices of the characters, but I had fun writing it.

Congratulations, you've won the Most Backhanded Praise in the Universe award.

I stand by what I said. I hated how the previous romancable companions we gay males got had to have their gay tendencies be downplayed or ignored completely and I'm glad we finally have a gay companion that will actually form or has formed meaningful relationships with other men.

If people *insist* on talking about this, take it to PM.

I'm not particularly in the mood to deal with people judging others for being happy about something that affects them personally and expressing their appreciation/enthusiasm/whatever.

And yet, why does that actually matter?

Complexity can come in many forms. Bill and Ellie from the Last of Us, Sander Cohen from Bioshock, Arcade Gannon and Veronica from Fallout New Vegas, (both playable too, technically) Tommy from Indigo Prophecy,  Kanji Tatsumi and Naoto Shiragame from Persona 4, the gay couple in The Walking Dead.

Need I go on?

Can you? You just listed pretty much every non-offensive non-joke non-romanceable male (and most such female) openly homosexual character there is in (AAA) gaming. And even adding romanceable ones, there's pretty much only Persona 2: Innocent Sin outside BioWare.

You don't need to romance anyone to make it complex. That is just a bonus, if anything.

I haven't played all of these games but I know most of these characters are not anywhere near as prominent as Dorian will be and that was the question asked. Bioware's companion characters are generally their most important characters and they have allot of content, also we are all forgetting about Sera, she's gay too.  :P

I don't think it's really about the romance and he hasn't even been confirmed as one.

Token because? We know Dorian isn't token because David made it clear that he really wanted to write a gay character. He obviously wasn't just shoved in as fan service

[DG]: I tend to start at "sarcastic" and work my way from there.

tumblr_n74ir9XGDb1s6z4zdo3_500.gif

Good, good, we like.

[DG]: Dorian is gay—he is, in fact, the first fully gay character I've had the opportunity to write. It added an interesting dimension to his back story, considering he comes from a place where "perfection" is the face that every mage puts on and anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden. Dorian's refusal to play along with that façade is seen as stubborn and pointless by his family, which has contributed to his status as a pariah.

Well I like Tevinter a lot less now but I like Dorian a lot more.

[DG]: I think I enjoy his relationship with Vivienne the most. They're complete opposites and will tear into each other viciously—or, at least, that's what it looks like to outsiders.

[DA]: After listening to Mary Kirby talk about Vivienne's power, we're not so sure that's Dorian's wisest move.

[DG]: Really, they find it good fun, and they'll go from arguing to banding together in order to criticize someone else in a cold second—like the Statler and Waldorf of Thedas. I love that.

I'm definitely cosplaying Dorian for Pax Prime....or maybe a genderbent Viv.

I'd rather like to see what a genderbent Vivienne would look like, but at the same time, if I ran into a well done Dorian cosplay I'd probably squee quite a lot... might have to hold back the urge to ask for a hug in that case.

I won't entirely disagree with you, at least insofar as Anders' dialogue with Femhawke being lacking, and Zevran... well, I never liked Zevran at all. However, in Fenris' case, of all the men he knows, one of them is straight and possibly dead, one is pining over a ghost and is also possibly straight, and one is locked into a relationship of mutual loathing with him.
