Him and Kaidan are about equal for me at this point.

As much as I love Kaidan, he was written for female then modified for females in ME3 seeing how much scenes were missing in comparison betwen maleShep and femShep. Dorian is already a step up from Kaidan in that regard since he was written for guys specifically.

Remember that DAI was originally due out last year, which was only about a year after that survey was leaked.

Given the lead times involved in creating or significantly changing companions, I'm not really surprised at all that it's been almost totally correct. We'd have to think that the decisions about companion characters were locked down years ago, at this point.

(For example, Mae couldn't make it into the game as a companion, and her character was created around the same time as the surveys, or even earlier.)

I'm curious. Who leaked the survey anyway?

I guess Kaidan and Dorian are actually pretty close aesthetically, but I'm way more attracted to what we know about Dorian's personality. I liked Kaidan, but I'll be honest, he was a little boring.

Two BSN members who had taken it on a survey website, they had English and German versions.

I would prefer to romance a rock instead of jacob, for me kaidan was miles ahead of him.

So based on what we know about the flamboyant Dorian which companion is everyone planning to have accompany them when they take Dorian?

With Mage Inquisitor probably Iron Bull (replaced with Cassandra if he tries to bed my Dorian) and Varric.

With rouge inquisitor probably Vivienne and Cassandra

With a warrior inquisitor probably Vivienne and Cole or Sera

The funny thing is when the english BSN got the leak , I checked the web everywhere...(yeah I'm a bit obsessive...) and I found out the survey was already leaked weeks ago on a popular French gaming forum.

The topic was like three pages long and it seems very few people cared.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt. Compared the 2 genders, female Shep and male Shep's scenes are both the same except femShep's scenes are longer. Kaidan doesn't touch maleShep face at the citadel, the sitting in the lap thing doesn't happen during the sex scene, the hand holding doesn't happen during Citadel DLC. They seem to modify the scene from femShep to maleShep, otherwise, no reason why it's shorter or has no alternative.

There is some evidence, since it is shorter, that it was an addendum.

Dragon Age is better than Mass Effect about making all aspects of a romance seem equal, so it should not be an issue. I still think it is valid for people to feel a little bit more hopeful that a m/m romance with Dorian will feel more like it was written by people who care, than a romance that may or may not have missing components from the opposite gender analogue.

Gosh, he's just so damn cute!   I wonder how early into the game we can recruit him. Apparently we can miss some of the companions so I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for that mustache!

I hadn't thought of that, but they are actually the two most attractive people in their respective franchises for me (and I haven't even heard Dorian's voice). However, they sound very different in terms of personality: Kaidan being like rock for Shepard, holding their back and offering advice as a senior officer, and Dorian the dashing, sarcastic pariah that is trying to do good. Their circumstances are pretty different though.

I'm wondering if Dorian's spirit/necromancy magic is going to make him the party's healer? If so he'll be one heck of a snarky doctor:

Dorian: And to think that the Senators droned on about how you lot were invincible grey giants.

Iron Bull: I'd like to see one of your fey little senators try to cold clock a giant.

Dorian: Considering that you fractured your hand in three places I doubt that any of them could do much better.

Iron Bull: You know I'm surprised that they kicked you out of the Imperium what with your sparkling personality.

Dorian: I'm surprised that you haven't regaled me with the story of how your people sew the mouths of their mages shut. Or threatened to wear my scalp as a hairpiece for that matter.

Iron Bull: (laughs) Hm, that second one isn't a bad idea.

Dorian: Well then you sir are clearly a man with excellent taste.

That was oddly heatwarming. It helps that I was picturing it going on while Dorian was tying a bandage around IB's hand, a la Beauty and Beast... or maybe it doesn't... that'd be a weirdass AU.

I understand hoping that Dragon Age will handle m/m relationships better than ME, because ME was just awful about it, even if I appreciate that they made progress in 3, but I hope the implication isn't that only "fully gay" romances can be for males. We should have one or two more options in Inquisition that are bisexual and I expect their romance arcs to be equally written for males as Dorian is. Bisexual character shouldn't be written for the opposite sex with same sex as an after-thought and there shouldn't be an expectation that they'll be worse when romancing them with the same-sex.

Although, honestly, I never expected to have an issue with this. I never felt the bisexual DA2 romances were written for women. I can understand Zevran from Origins being arguable, but I think the DA series has already been doing a good job with this.

I wouldn't be too concerned, Dave did say he wrote Fenris's romance from the perspective of a man, and really that whole romantic arc felt pretty gender neutral to me.

I always felt like the m/m romance with Fenris felt more... right(?) somehow. Never knew he was specifically written with a m/m romance in mind until I read it on these forums.

Back to Dorian, it sounds like he's already out and proud, but do you think he'll still be wary of possible prejudice? Like maybe if he thinks anyone is thinking of him as "deviant" he gets defensive? Or maybe he's surprised by how little the other party members care about him liking guys? It's got to be a bit of a change for him to go from a country where his sexuality is considered wrong to Orlais and Ferelden where its considered a bit odd but otherwise no big deal.

Honestly, I kind of hope sexuality isn't a particularly big focus of his character. I hope he just is gay and it's not treated much differently than any other character's sexuality. I don't really want it to be a big "thing". I've really liked how much of a non-issue it's been in the past.

I didn't mean it as the focus of his character (sorry, I could have worded it better), just every once and a while there's got to be some sort of weird dissonance? An occasional bout of culture shock. I imagine he'll have similar shocks regarding the difference in how mages are regarded and people around him actually being horrified by slavery and blood magic.

I can see him being bitter of the hypocrisy of it (I can rape a male slave but god forbid I bed a willing male partner) but it sounds like he's gotta a little more on his plate than his sexuality. He's got a whole country to reform, its opinion of his sexuality is probably relatively low on a very very long list of grievances.

I really do not think it will be the main focus of his story arc ...

Because well he's a pariah so he already made his choice about his lifestyle and two , it's possible he left Tevinter because what his fellow magisters are doing is quite dangerous.

So I do not think reforming Tevinter view about sexuality is going to be on top of his list during DAI.

I think It's just something that's going to come up when you talk with him at camp, I guess the fact that it caused trouble with his family and what he feels about it will be part of the talk.

Besides our companions are usually open minded folk and homosexuality isn't something shocking in Thedas.

So no "OMG Dorian is gay"

"He's gay?!"

"Yes I'm gay."

"Really gay?..."

Dorian without his moustache makes baby Andraste cry.

I would absolutely do an appearance mod for Dorian to get rid of the goofy moustache, but I have a feeling half the dialogue/banter with him will involve it -_-

After reading the interview he kind of reminds me of Julian Bashir from Deep Space 9.
