I think it would have worked better had I said:

Who?

That is your values, but it isn't, no matter how much you wish it, an undeniable truth.

Just as a note, your assertion then must also not be an undeniable truth, no matter how much you wish it.  Since that puts us into paradox land, I consider this a great segue to stop the discussion about moral relativity.

Thanks!

Is it acceptable if we discuss if we can shock him so much his mustache spins around in a comical and cartoonish fashion?

If you wish to talk about Dorian (or even his relationship to Tevinter Imperium) then have at 'er.  The moral relativism of slavery wasn't going anywhere as I believe both sides had drawn their lines in the sand.

The name Dorian was a bit of a giveaway to begin with

Okay, this gave me pause.

What does that even mean?

Picture of Dorian Gray. Dorian is bisexual and Oscar Wilde is an icon of the LGBT community.

Okay... but Dorian was named after the writers had a discussion where the old Hercules cartoon came up.

In other words, it's reaching a bit to suggest that sharing a name with an LGBT character is evidence of anything. ;)

I came across this and had to share haha (note, link contains an f-bomb in case language is a concern for the circumstances you're watching in).

Part of a larger analysis of the video, but this part in particular made me think of this thread :)

I sort of have a feeling that Dorian is Jennifer Helper's left-over character.

No-- Jennifer was originally writing Cassandra, who I took over after Jennifer left.

At this point my attempts to understand the rationale behind anything to do with the order and timing of companion/character reveals just ends with me throwing my hands in the air and running gibbering from the room.

It's not as if marketing has everything ready to go for every character and is flinging darts at the pictures, trying to decide what to show and what to hide. Many things need to come together from various departments in order to show something publicly--the art has to be 100% ready, various managers need to agree on the particular screenshot or the quotes or the schedule, things need to be written and edited, etc... all by people who are in the middle of heavy crunch.

They're well aware you guys want to know everything now. As soon as they can, they'll put stuff up.

Because it makes him sound too vain in my opinion. The first part was nice, but the second part ruined it for me. I mean, the VA may be able to make it endearing like how Robert Downey Jr. made Tony Stark vain yet still awesome, but I don't get the feeling it will work nearly as well.

The quote is also the type of thing that I would say, as I tend to enjoy comments of faux arrogance.  I mean, have you seen my pythons? *kisses bicep*

The same words can mean very, very different things depending on the context.  "Of course I'm awesome."  Am I being vain and arrogant, or am I being playful and charming?  Or something else?

Yeah, i'm really surprised by that. Seems like the women here who wanted a f/m romance with him are more mature and respectful than the dudes  when they found out Sera is gay. God, the comments.... and of course there were some men who were respectful too (i didn't forget about you guys :))

Makes me wonder why the Sera thread got so much hostility...

I'm really happy for you all to finally get a gay male companion. :D

Also Viv and Dorian? God yes please, i'm sO going to add them to my party. If only Sera would get along well with them so it would be the sass party.

I think there's also a degree of "lets not let this turn out as poorly as the other thread did" (i.e. people learning from the other thread and not wanting to repeat the same issues.

There could be other reasons, but in general I appreciate that it's more "happy for you guys" types of stuff and not really any sort of vitriol.

Let me put it this way: Of all the male companions, Dorian was the only one I was really interested in romancing with my female characters. That option is gone now. Am I allowed to whine now?  <_<

You've stated your perspective, which is fine.

Hopefully the other male characters can work out once the game is in your hands.

I think Allan is right when he said a lot of the maturity here is because everyone saw how bad the Sera situation got so would rather not repeat it. If Dorian was announced before Sera, I see the same thing that happened with her happening with him.

I don't think it's the only reason (in my own, personal experiences, the women I know are more comfortable with LGBT.  That may not be accurate to reality, but if it is it could be influenced by that).  Some that are disappointed are still mostly happy because they are empathizing with the idea that it's an exclusively gay companion which doesn't really happen all that much.

It think it's that the thread was kinda prepared for it you know? I mean people have been kind of making the assumption for awhile now (and not necessarily based on stereotypes, there have been some pretty sensible deductions based on companion makeup that supported the theory as well). Expectations weren't so high as they were for Sera, which helped to keep things calmer, I think.

Also a valid point that I hadn't considered.

I may have overlooked it since I knew for some time.

I think Dorian is great, but not because he's gay. I think it's a little ridiculous that Gaider makes such a big deal out of this. We already had Cortez, this isn't new.

I don't think David is doing anything other than speaking honestly when he shares that... as opposed to some sort of "PR statement."  It's something exciting for David, and the only person that is really qualified to say that is David himself.

And yet, why does that actually matter?

Are you saying that the gay people that are excited by this are wrong for feeling happy?  Many of them are saying it matters.

Hell, Zevran and Leliana also count in this, if were keeping track. And yea, bisexuals count too. Just saying.

Absolutely.  I support representation in all its forms.  That said, I don't believe it's the same to point "Well there are bisexuals and they count" when many gay people have been telling me otherwise.

I don't give a **** if he is the first or not. Making a big deal out of this is kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Good that it's happened, but ridiculous.

Unfortunately a lot of people do care.  It sort of seems to lend validation that a decent number of people do find it important.

I understand it more than you realize, token representation via one character at this point is nothing.

If you're implying that Dorian is nothing more than "token representation" then that's unfortunately.  Hopefully we can prove you wrong.

If people *insist* on talking about this, take it to PM.

I'm not particularly in the mood to deal with people judging others for being happy about something that affects them personally and expressing their appreciation/enthusiasm/whatever.

Soooooo, at the risk of playing with some fire (note, this means I'll be returning to the thread to read up on responses.... choose your decisions to be disrespectful wisely), I don't have any huuuuuge issue over discussing Dorian's appearance.

Internally, Dorian used to be a very anglo-germanic appearance.  Unambiguously white.  As such, I likely have a bias to seeing him as non-white since I have that comparison.  It was a temporary model, so I don't know if this was intentional and then changed for this reason, but I believe that it was.  And I think that this version turned out better than the original version (there was other aspects that were different about his face, although they were often buggy and incomplete).

I'm someone that hasn't really received that much exposure to cultural diversity, by nature of living where I am and not traveling much during my life... so I'm a poor judge but I would have probably placed him as being probably from the middle east or maybe some of the neighbouring locales from there.  Just my two cents on the topic anyways.

Just remove the mustache. Then he's a stud. He's handsome. He's a bad ass mage. But until then he's Inigo Montoya's annoying brother.

Looking at the pics with and without, I mostly find the moustache to be a non-factor in his overall attractiveness.  His hair and general face structure I really like.

They said it was for plot reasons...

(but that could easily be code for "the animations were a nightmare to do")

They don't necessarily exist in a vacuum.  If you know you have constraints, you can design content to fit within those constraints.

Or maybe CinDesign just worked some epic shifts to make the gating less of an issue!  Could be a lot of things :P

Unfortunately, this might not even help... the last I heard, companions will know what you did on missions even if you didn't take them along, and that will still effect relationships... :/

Only for actions you took which are public knowledge.
