Edit: That is to say, purple fits because it's aristocratic and maybe even Byzantine, and I think the clothes themselves would be ornate and stylish rather than practical or modest.

Purple definitely sounds like it fits. His formal dress sense would be aristocratic and outrageous.

Ah, yes, Tyrian Purple, the most expensive of dyes! The color of wealth, power, and mass killings of innocent sea snails. *sigh*
Oooh, and I am entirely with you on the Byzantine style speculation! With the high probability of DHMG being our much beloved exiled magister, it would be pretty fitting for him to be wearing something at least a little inspired by the last stronghold of the late Roman Empire~.

Why Byzantine though? The concept art showing the fashion of Tevinter Orlais and Ferelden doesn't quite look like that i think.

Mostly because Tevinter seems at least partially to be drawing some of its trappings from the Roman Empire. I don't actually think they walk around wearing variations on the toga and such, I just like the idea of that Imperial Byzantine flavor. Or, at least, Imperial Byzantine Purple.

That's what their nobility wears:

I remember reading that at some point the writers used the late Byzantine period as one inspiration for Tevinter, at least in the sense of a powerful empire past its prime and threatened by a new enemy, with a long memory of imperial glory.
I think it'd be interesting to see something based on the mediaeval Eastern Empire, rather than have everyone running around in togas and trying to impersonate Gladiator.

I really want to see him at a ball now in some outrageous outfit.
Maybe he and Vivienne could have a competition.

Think I've settled on him wearing Tevinter fashion, he is brazen after all. The freaked out stares he'd get, I think he'd enjoy. I'll see what I can muster up.

In the way he talks and acts, are we imagining him to be pretty flamboyant?

Ooooh no....
Vivienne: *cheerful* Dorian, darling! How ever did you get here before me? I hope you didn't sacrifice any precious hours of your toilette just to arrive so quickly. You need it, after all!
Dorian: *enthusiastically* Oh, my dearest Vivienne, of course not! One doesn't need to toil so long when dealing with a natural nobility like my own.
Vivienne: Careful, my dear! It's that kind of cockiness that can ruin a man. We wouldn't want someone of your stature to attend a function such as this in, say, moth-eaten, old-fashoned rags, now would we?
Dorian: *chuckles* Oh, not to worry, Madame. I've taken great precautions not to look like a great, clown-colored peacock. That would be simply tragic.
Vivienne: *smiles sweetly* What would be even more sad would be for one to show up here in some pompous, done-to-death outfit, don't you think?
Dorian: *smooths mustache* No more upsetting than coming to a ball wearing a headdress heavy enough to match one's falsely inflated ego, I imagine.
Vivienne: *smile drops* ... You realize, my darling, what manner of battle you have begun here? You will not escape from it unscathed, I assure you.
Dorian: *smirks* Oh, I relish the very thought, my lovely Madame de Fer.
Inquisitor: *spectating* ... Uh, should I...?
Varric: Don't, Inquisitor. Just... just don't.

I would kill for this interaction in the game! Especially moustache tweaking, it's mandatory. I think there was even an animation for dwarves in DA2.
I want to drag them both to a ball. Hell, I want to drag them both everywhere I can!

To a degree, definitely. I think he's probably very eloquent in the way he speaks, and with those flaily hands, he must have some flamboyant mannerisms. I'd find it amusing if he's normally quite calm, but when he's shocked or flustered or what-have-you, he starts with the dramatic hands.

*snip*
The ruined remains of the Empress's ballroom gently crumbled away as The Magister and The Enchanter declared a truce and proceeded in mocking The Inquisitor's choice of embellished footwear;
Vivienne: Florals? For Spring?
Dorian: Groundbreaking

What so freaking out in Tevinter fashion? To me, at least men's outfit is way more stylish and practical, than that crap of a skirts that Andrastian mages is bound to wear (i'm talking about concepts, not ingame robes, which were definitely fit only for women).

Tevinter seems like it's more spiky and pointy rather than lavish and ornate like the fashion of Orlais, it'd set him apart if we ever get to visit the court of the empress.
