I swear he's written gay characters before though. Wasn't there a male couple in The Calling?
He did. Julien and Nicolas.

Perhaps he meant in a game.

I assume by character he means somebody like Dorian who has more than two lines, and is actually in the game.
(And I just checked the interview, the line is actually "fully gay" and not "legitimately" - seems awkward that people can get something wrong then freak out about it.)

Are you really surprised by that, though?
Since breeding seems to be a large issue in Tevinter within the upperclass, I wonder if Dorian has a bunch of siblings? It would be interesting to run into a family member/members who are tracking him down.

Some people look for ways to be insulted. Frankly it wasn't that person's business to respond in that manner. What does being bisexual have to do with being gay, or "fully" gay for that matter? I don't even understand the difference between "fully" and "legitimately" in this context and I don't think Mr. Gaider should have even responded. Bisexual people aren't "fully" gay nor are they "fully" straight. They are their neither if you follow the definitions of "gay" and "straight".
Dorian is "fully" gay because he has no inclinations for women. Period.
It is more likely that the attitude of Tevinter to his sexuality was the catalyst for him questioning the system as a whole. Sometimes people need to be affected by something personally before they realise the inherent problems in the system. I'd like to think he'd have come to that realisation anyway but it makes more sense that one thing led to another. If you have been brought up within a system in a position of privilege where you benefit from it, you are far less likely to question it.

I think he used the word "legitimately" later on when correcting himself on twitter.
But either way, I'm bi myself, always on the lookout for biphobia, but I never took it this as biphobia or an insult. I just took it as him meaning someone 100% into men, he wanted to be clear about that, since that's not how it's been done before, and that's it.
Wasn't it basically confirmed ever since Dorian was confirmed to be gay tho lol
I'm more excited to see how he'll turn down a femquisitor when she tries to flirt with him. I'm pretty sure it'll be priceless

I think there's an issue of semantics, too.
People have been referring to Zevran, Fenris and Anders as "the gay romances" for years even though those characters aren't gay.
If David wanted to make the point that Dorian wasn't attracted to women, using a word like "fully" is a way to distinguish him from the other m/m romances who were actually bisexual, or ambiguous. There might've been better ways to phrase it, but I haven't seen anyone misunderstand that Dorian is actually gay, and not just someone of unstated sexuality who is available to male characters.
I *definitely* think the reaction has been a little silly, and it's not the first time people have leaped on something he's said and used it as a reason to throw around various ~phobias.

I'm happy he's a LI at all. 50 pages back we had some doubts he'd even be one. Anyway, rather than the rejection he might give the ladies (imo it's possible you'd just never have certain dialogue from him. Who doesn't change their dialogue IRL when they're not seeking a relationship...? lol). It's possible he'd even tell the femQuiz "oh you're such a lovely lady, but I am unavailable [goes into story on how he's gay etc], etc etc, but you are my friend" once you reach a certain point with him. I'm considering making a femQuiz just to see how the dialogue differs and how the friendship works (and I make male chars first and really wanna get with this guy). Think about it. Does Dorian really have many friends in his situation? Not really. He's jaded and sarcastic, as we've learned. I think he really needs someone to love or care about in some manner. Some people completely took Zevran for a caricature, but he had some serious dialogue once you knew him well enough.. Since this is 2014, I expect we'll have even more dialogue and time to get to know Dorian.
I'm more interested in the friendship he'll have with the female Quiz, rather than how he rejects her, and how it compares to the male friendship someone asked about on Twitter (can we be bros for life ala Garrus - the response was yes he has a friendship you can do if you don't want to romance). Just hope female players can be bros for life too, or maybe with him it's more of the witty peanut gallery giving everyone the side eye, if they're seeking out friendship with him. Anyway, his ego and all, I think he does need someone who he can open up to about non-surface matters. Like a bestie. That's what I care about.

I don't see why female inquisitors couldn't be friends for life with, Dorian? I doubt there will be much (if any) gendered difference on friendship. ![]()
Yeah, friendship is usually the same for both genders.
I can't really see why there should be a difference; it's not an area where gender ought to matter much.
(And if they have to write separate paths for each gender, that does mean less content overall.)
Just an observation, but Alexius and his son appear to be in the company of the Venatori and have the same rift powers that he does.
If Dorian conveniently forgot to mention this before Leliana tried to infiltrate Castle Redcliffe only to be captured and tortured that might explain why she's so angry at him in the demo.
When is she mad at him? She's mad at Alexius but I don't see where she gets mad at Dorian.
I can't wait for Dorian to be my Fquiz's BFF ![]()

I brought up women because the only questions about the Quiz having a friendship with him (and with an official answer) addressed males, and was likely from a straight guy who doesn't want their Quiz to have a gay romance.
Also I saw people erroneously doubting femQuiz could be his friend. I mean, I really want to see a playthrough of the friendship. Sometimes you might see less of the friendship dialogue stuff if you're playing a romance.

It wasn't shown but someone that watched the demo said that Leliana essentially tells him to stfu by telling him that he is "just filling the silence" when he's only making sure she's OK in a friendly manner
It's pretty harsh of her but seeing that he's related to this whole issue, I can see why she harbors distrust towards him.
I personally think this situation happens if Dorian and Leliana don't get to interact before this quest chain, leading her to not understand what his motivations and inclinations are. Also, this only happens if Leliana is sent to spy on Alexius. This could be one of many different scenarios.

I want options to tell people to LEAVE DORIAN ALONE throughout the game
Lady Insanity, who saw the demo, reported this. When is she mad at him? She's mad at Alexius but I don't see where she gets mad at Dorian.
They never released that damn demo...
rrrrrrrrrrr grumble grumble
