OHMYGOD THAT REMINDS ME.

HAS ANYONE MADE DAPPER DAN REFERENCES??? HAVE THEY?!??!!? WHY HAVEN'T WE?!?!?!

*ahem*

The upkeep of such a magnificent moustache and mane must be difficult. Dorian must use only the best product.

Dorian is a Dapper Dan man.

Since BioWare is an expert in male derriere, let's hope our beloved magister pornstache will get similar treatment.

I wonder if Dorian is the first playable gay (male) character... of all time?
Because that would be awesome!

I really had to rack my brain to think about this one. It was harder than I thought. A lot of the LGBT characters are 'hidden' with ambiguity, but there are a few that are pretty obvious:

* Arcade was an NPC follower in Fallout New Vegas, but while he plays a similar role to Dorian, he wasn't able to be switched to in combat.
* Jacob Ritter in State of Decay is gay, but through random event generation, he might be bisexual if a 'romance trouble' event generates between him and a female character. In the scripted story, though, he's presented as gay (although I guess he could be bisexual since it's never stated that he's not)
* There was a playable gay party member in one of the Persona games (although I'm not sure which one)
* There's a slightly ambiguous but still pretty obvious gay squad member in Valkyria Chronicles
* Big Gay Al was playable in the South Park racing game (What? He counts!

But honestly, that might be it. Literally, those might be the only examples of scripted gay men who you can play as in video game history. How sad.....

If we're counting women as well, there's Ellie from The Last of Us (I hope that's not a spoiler), but she's the only lesbian girl I can think of.

I think Sims did it first but it's not exactly scripted so yeah it's rather sad isn't it.

Yeah, I actively didn't discuss lesbians or bisexual men/women since there has been very different representation of those groups in video games. I was really just thinking of scripted playable gay men in video games. And, then I was sad....

Yeah there aren't many. :-(

Arcade was great because he only made a passing reference to it, it didn't define him at all and it was only brought up in conversation like once or twice casually. Most homosexual characters either have it brought up as the main part of their character or it's used to sexualise them in some way... or also (even more sadly) used for comedic effect.

No one in Persona was gay.  The guy was just a victim of gender stereotypes.

Actually, that's not true! o: In Persona 2, Jun Korosu is gay and he's a potential love interest for the main character. (You're probably thinking about Kanji from Persona 4, in which case you'd be correct.)

Yeah, this is the guy I was thinking about. He was like a childhood friend, right?

I am also vaguely aware of the other guy, I think, as well. He's the guy whose persona suggests he might not be straight, or something like that, right? I wasn't necessarily talking about him because I've heard people interpret it differently.

I've never played these games though, beyond the original PS1 import of the first game (where, coincidently, they also changed characters' races....).

I forget how much cultural stereotypes can warp your perception. I genuinely thought Kanji was gay. Ugh, I feel bad.

I may have just spent a good chunk of the last half an hour reading the 2000+ comments on IGN's Dorian article. call me masochistic

jesus christ, internet. the BSN has *never* been this bad.

I thought David was being pessimistic when he expected the character to create controversy, but clearly I've been living in a sheltered bubble of sane and reasonable people who are all over the age of ten and act like decent human beings. Because those comments are some of the worst comments I've ever seen on an article.

Never read the comments. They always make you lose your faith in humanity

Faith in humanity -9000 ?

I read article in my language (i live in a  homophobic/-phobic country) and i must say everytime i feel awful after reading those comments (i know i shouldn't read it but yeah...)

And i thought we live in XXI century :(

It so discouraging when people judge you/want to kill you etc only because you're different, that's utterly sick ;/

Ok i need to calm down, back to pleasant topics.

Keep in mind, the most vocal minority who aren't able to express their word-crap gravitate to those comment boxes (yes, even YouTube.) So it may appear more skewed to homophobia, which is not the case. Sure, a lot of people are still greatly uncomfortable with homosexuality, I think... but just remember how far it's come and the fact that people (well, unless you are in a backwater state/city that everyone outside of it sneers at) keep those opinions way more quiet than they used to. Which is why they resort to comment sections of things. Hell, the fact we have this and they've gone ahead with it DESPITE the fact that I am almost positive some stakeholders didn't want it... just keep that in mind :)

Also, why the frigg did you read the comment section of something. Why would you IN GENERAL. You have to not do that, Pinecone. It just hurts your soul :(

Change is coming to the world. Some men will fear it, and fight it with every fiber of their being. But sometimes change is what they need most. Change will set them free.

I cannot even be bothered to attribute worth to the word or opinions of worthless people.  We have two fully queer companions in one game!  Today is a good day to be a gaymer or LGBT supporter.
