the most vocal minority who aren't able to express their word-crap gravitate to those comment boxes

Spoiler
Sure, homophobics aren't a minority, I mean those reaaalllly bad ones. Ones who show up in comment boxes and say very, very horrible things. It's also a rule of thumb for any nasty thing said. Perhaps not a minority, but it's less accepted to be openly vocal about being a homophobe.
Kind of OT, but I am a fan of Pewdiepie (IDC if you hate him I like him forrealz) and he admitted in a video recently that he is an agnostic-athiest. He lost 100k subs. He has about 28 million subscribers, so that's not a big amount. It's just how it is. Some people are stupid. In fact, more than some.
Also, why the frigg did you read the comment section of something. Why would you IN GENERAL. You have to not do that, Pinecone. It just hurts your soul
This. Biggest mistake anyone can make, especially of the LGBT persuasion.
I feel bad that David's copped so much flak for his "fully gay" comment. While this choice of wording in another context could absolutely be taken to be ignorant or biphobic, it wasn't in a context that could be logically interpreted that way, IMO. When somebody first brought attention to it I went back and checked it again and have done so periodically since, and it still seems incredibly concise to me about solely pertaining to Dorian being the first companion to have an exclusive sexual/romantic interest in his own gender. To represent that aspect of the LGBT community, which has been largely ignored up to this point.
I too am a little miffed at how much this has been blown up over the character itself (something I can relate to as a gay person when people find out and seem to forget completely about the person I was before they knew), but this kind of press and attention needs to happen so that in future, characters can be gay without it being a big deal. Dorian can be gay and just be seen as Dorian. I'm still waiting for a game with a gay male protagonist!
GOSHDARNIT BIOWARE, NO. NO. AND NO.
HE WAS THE ONLY ONE I WAS INTERESTED IN DATING AND TURNS OUT HE'S GAY.
I don't need real life to transfer to my videogames! ![]()
Agreed. It is ridiculous how people are beating on David for his choice of words. And having the audacity to call Bioware biphobic when there have been a crap ton of bisexual characters in both franchises.This. Biggest mistake anyone can make, especially of the LGBT persuasion.

Awww, you aren't interesting in rolling a male PC?
And to the second, we have all been there.

In regards to a gay male protagonist, someday, my friend. Someday. And I swear, I will be here to see it when it does happen.
I think in context it was fine. People who didn't know the context of why he said that got all angry like people do, bristling up their quills without actually going and doing their own research. Pretty typical.
Also, we do have a few gay male protagonists in indie games. Yeahhhh...
Sorry to hear that. Maybe he can still be a good friend in the game for you!GOSHDARNIT BIOWARE, NO. NO. AND NO.

Sometimes the amount of hatred and bigotry one can find in BSN is just frustrating. I am so glad for this thread, I really am.
I've seen a couple of his videos btw. He's fun, I like him too. He's better off without those people. Unfff.
Btw... I hope my gif didn't convey the wrong message me worried
Awww, you aren't interesting in rolling a male PC?

Not in a story-driven rpg, no. In those games I always tend to create an audience stand-in.
Aw man. I guess I have to hope that Iron Bull is an interesting character.
.....Wait, he's named Dorian. And he's gay. Oh come on! Does he also have a magical rejuvenating painting?

First of all I RESENT you saying the word "bang her with a male elf" ,since you are certainly female, instead of romance SECOND YOU ARE NOT BIOWARE I IGNORE YOU goodbye

It seems that his name was actually not intended as a reference to Dorian Gray (it was something speculated here for quite some time) , but rather was decided upon after (either watching or discussing, can't remember) the 1960's Hercules cartoon. ![]()
I like to think that those people are definitely the minority and that many many more people are like me who just read those articles, say "that's great!", and then move on. I think it's those people's hate that compels them to express it. They just HAVE to let people know just how much they hate this particular thing! My solace is the fact that no one is listening to them and this content will keep coming regardless and, to be honest, I get a little pleasure from it.

Cheers to that! I dream of a future where I can pick up a game like Uncharted or somesuch where the hero's love interest just happens to be of the same gender without any need for explanation or exposition. It just is. Perhaps it's because society has conditioned me to accept it, but I don't feel at all uncomfortable to play Uncharted and root for him getting the girl, or turning on the TV and hoping for a happy ending for Buffy and Angel. If I as a homosexual gamer have no qualms immersing myself into the role of a heterosexual male/female and have it not affect my enjoyment of the product, that capacity is there for everyone.
Edit: Getting a bit carried away though since my posts have completely moved away from being about Dorian it seems, so I guess I'll get off that tangent and save it for drunken conversations. So Dorian, he seems pretty cool, eh?
Also, we do have a few gay male protagonists in indie games. Yeahhhh...
Any example? *curious*

I may have just spent a good chunk of the last half an hour reading the 2000+ comments on IGN's Dorian article. call me masochistic
jesus christ, internet. the BSN has *never* been this bad.
I thought David was being pessimistic when he expected the character to create controversy, but clearly I've been living in a sheltered bubble of sane and reasonable people who are all over the age of ten and act like decent human beings. Because those comments are some of the worst comments I've ever seen on an article.
yeah I read some of those too
the youtube video also had many dislikes with people saying things like gay people are annoying because they shove the fact down everyone's throat
things like this really break the generally good mood on this thread and BSN in general
Wait... youtube video? Is it the E3 interview where they confirmed his name, or is there a video talking about Dorian and I missed it? ![]()
I wonder why? I don't think it has any meaning, like Alistair's namesake. Actually, that's the same scenario - watching a show with a character with that name at the time of writing him. How funny.
I'd be interested in finding out, actually. I mistakenly believed it was a reference to Dorian Gray, but David cleared it up in this thread:
Okay... but Dorian was named after the writers had a discussion where the old Hercules cartoon came up.
In other words, it's reaching a bit to suggest that sharing a name with an LGBT character is evidence of anything.
All I can think of is that Prince Dorian (in the Hercules cartoon!) was a benevolent and noble character, which might be what they're going for in DAI's Dorian.
But it would be weird if during some point in that Writer's Pit conversation, somebody didn't bring up Wilde's Dorian as at least a coincidental reference. I mean, even if they based it on Hercules, the other one is probably the more famous "Dorian".

I'm just talking about this video
where they announce it that he is gay

Indeed. Well, I mean, Brokeback Mountain was really popular and it was so romantic.. too bad it (like many LGBT films) had a sad ending. I don't remember seeing super angry boycotts... I am probably wrong.
edit: Sorry that seems OT, I just mean like, it seems the general public have been open to gay romances being depicted in films, so why not games?
Any example? *curious*
http://en.wikipedia...._in_video_games Doesn't have everything but it mentions a few PCs in there. All three of them :\
Also, that recent one, Gone Home featured a the sister to the female PC being gay. Lovely little game.

Maybe was one of those 'realise it in hindsight' things.
Alternatively the Hercules cartoon explanation is a red herring.
We'll know in October!

I have a fabulous app on my google chrome browser which has switched out YouTube comments to Reddit ones. If it has been linked on Reddit, I get to read that discussion. Otherwise, it's blank.
Such relief.
