(That being said, I fully expect Dorian's romance to be behind fifteen layers of dialogue and for him to never make a pass at the player, because the howling from entitled teenagers who seem to haunt IGN's comment section made it clear that they can't tolerate any association with gay people, period.)

 

You see, this is what I am afraid of. I don't want the lgbt characters to be optional just for being lgbt and I don't want their content to be hidden. It's got nothing to do with any gay agenda or anything like that I just feel like they should be treated the same as any other character. I have a good feeling about Dorian and Sera though. 

 

So far the only character we know of who's recruitment is optional is Cole, yes we can drive them all away save one (probably Cass) but we don't know how hard that is. If some characters are mandatory then I hope one of them is Dorian or Sera. I don't want their sexuality to define them but I hope they do bring it up no matter how homophobic the player may or may not be. 

 

I guess that's just my hopes though, I don't expect bioware to conform to my wishes and I'm not gonna start trashing them if they don't. I just hope they don't cave to homophobic trolls.

I think he has a silver screen vibe but I wouldn't say Errol. He most likely does have a real-world counterpart, though. As in, a model that has been used as reference.

Considering Bioware is keeping the dialogue icons, I have hopes his romance won't be hidden. If some homophobic child clicks the giant gold heart, that's their own damn issue.

 

I imagine his sexuality might come up in dialogue too, seeing Mr. Gaider mentioned it in his interview. Maybe Dorian will snarl about the forced marriages and stuff at some point? I'm not sure if there'll be a mention with Sera, though. She seems to have less reason to bring it up in conversation, though I hope it gets a mention! Even if it's, like, during a story she's telling or a banter with Iron Bull or someone. Maybe during that game of Wicked Grace we've heard about?

Thats the beauty of making Cullen bisexual. Then his romance development is done and thousands of people would be happy in that aspect of his character, then they can develop more important aspects accordingly.

I don't think it works like that, if Cullen is straight or Bi it's because his writer wanted him to be not because of his fanbase

I think there'll be fairly "open" same-sex content in the game, in the sense that some s/s relationships will be part of the plot and players will be exposed to them whether or not they choose to participate in a same-sex romance themselves. That's a good thing.

 

(So, to take Dorian as an example, he'd talk about his life in Tevinter and the status of lesbian/gay people in a normal conversation, not just if you're romancing him. Maybe ditto with Sera, and Celene/Briala if we ever run into them.)

 

But I think when it comes to initiating a romance, or having characters like Dorian hit on the player, they'll be much more careful. Steve Cortez's romance confirmation scene was (literally) hidden behind three or four layers of dialogue - you had to agree to go to a club with him, then choose a lot of very specific romantic lines before he'd bring up the possibility of a relationship. At every stage, there was also an "escape" line that seemed to be designed to get you out of the conversation in a hurry if you'd somehow got there by accident - things like "I'm watching the lady dancers", "I'm only interested in women", etc.

 

It's something they didn't do for any other character that I can think of, and unfortunately the only reason that comes to mind is that the team wanted to be extra-extra careful in how they handled the conversations for male/male romances. Blame the idiots who have been screaming about Anders for the last three years, I guess.

I never understood (and still don't) how someone could be ninja-manced in DA2.

I was in Mass Effect 1 with Ashley, and in ME2 with Miranda (they should have drawn a better line of distinction - I'm just a friendly person and wanted to befriend them), but in DA2 they had hearts. What were people thinking when they saw it? "Oh let's take this bromance to the next level of... bromance."

If people were romancing characters accidentally in that game - let them deal with having made an obvious blunder.

I actually liked that Shepard could mention his own interest in men to Steve, and even dance with him without activating the romance (my Kaidan-mancing mshep did that). I would prefer all romances to be ninja-proof like this.

I was in Mass Effect 1 with Ashley, and in ME2 with Miranda (they should have drawn a better line of distinction - I'm just a friendly person and wanted to befriend them), but in DA2 they had hearts. What were people thinking when they saw it? "Oh let's take this bromance to the next level of... bromance."

If people were romancing characters accidentally in that game - let them deal with having made an obvious blunder.

Though, I will admit, there's one legitimate complaint with Anders when he flirts with the player, and that's how the only option to turn him down is pretty dicky sounding. Both the Diplomatic and Snarky options become flirts in that case, so there's no 'let's turn him down politely' option. That problem was overall, though, not specifically m/m.

I've seen a LPer get ninjamanced by Merril, so it's possible. The sex scenes do happen without direct player input after all, in response to what one could think is a simple flirt line.

I still chuckle whenever I think of that.

 

Anyone who accidentally has sex with Zevran is either skipping through the dialogue - which is a bad idea in Dragon Age if you haven't heard a particular conversation before, for all sorts of reasons - or they are very sheltered and, like, nine years old. In which case, they should not be playing the game at all. Zevran is many things, but subtle is not one of them.
