It's funny, Dorian fits the Necromancer class because he uses spirit magic, and Solas also fits the Rift Mage because she is a "fade expert", but I can't imagine Vivienne as a Knight Enchanter (aka Arcane Warrior 2.0). I don't think she would wield a sword in battle.

It certainly looks like a sword in the conceptart.

That looks like the staves in DA2, some of which did have blades at the end of them.

I know some had blades on them, but that looks like a grip, guard and a long blade.

There is nowhere on that object to get a good grip at where the hilt and grip would be. Each space is smaller than her hand.

If anything, Dorian's concept art is the one that actually features him holding a sword.

Assuming the artist was that detailed and technical about it, there is still space to hold it.

But if he's the necromancer, it got to be either Viv or Solas who has Knight Enchanter, or so I'm guessing.

I see I missed the Leliana spaz. Anything new with the 'Stache King?

And Solas has a lot of Rift Mage-ness going on so Vivi is a pretty good guess.

That never looked like a sword to me.  I always though it looked like a mage's staff.  <shrug>

I was on team "Mustache Guy is a mage" ages ago.  :P

He's holding a sword and a staff in that picture. The sword is on his back, and he's reaching for it with his right hand.

I thought it just looked like the fancy topper of a staff.  The extra prong look liked it was to switch to melee combat for wielding a staff.  I can squint and see what you guys mean, but I guess I never saw it that way.  To each their own on that one.   :)

And here I am, in the Dorian thread, discussing the finer points of his old staff, and counting the prongs.  Here's the rest of us, that can't stop talking about his hard...long...brown...strong...staff or sword from the concept art.

Peaches, what are you trying to say there?  ;)

Anyway, does anyone else find it odd that in DA2 mages can actually melee slash enemies within short range? Like, overpowered much.

Nothing, just making an observation.   ;)

I don't.  To me, it makes more sense than a mage having no melee training at all.  Sometimes, you're too tired (i.e low on mana) or you're not in a good place to cast spells.  Training a mage to use their staff as a melee weapon to defend themselves added to my immersion.  Leaving mages with just their spells and not learn to use the staff in physical combat just seemed silly to me in Origins and in Awakening.  Even D&D mages can use daggers and slings to defend themselves.  Mages generally don't, which only leaves them with their staves.

Indeed, it makes little sense for a mage to not utilize one of the best martial weapons available right within their hands.  Bo staff.  Or even like DA2, when they has blades on them, like spears and tridents, or glaives, to utilize like polearm weaponry.  If I were a mage, I certainly would be outfitting my staff to be as lethal as possible not just in magic capacity but in melee combat as well.  If an enemy gets through the ranks to be in your face, and you have no defenses or offenses, you're easy dead meat.

I like to reference the Sacred Ashes CGI trailer from Origins.  Morrigan not only uses her staff expertly in melee combat but she also does combination takedown maneuvers (leg and staff and grab) with it as well.

Edited to add:  Dorian's concept art looks more like a spear or trident polearm to me.

That... Makes sense. Ah, well. I guess I'm too well-accustomed to physically feeble magicians a la Japanese RPGs who use wooden staffs, dolls, and books to melee...

Haha, no worries.

Ah, nice safe happy thread.  The debate about Cole and his identity in his fan thread is a little depressing.  Is there any new Dorian fan art or a song inspired by him you guys can share?

I actually really like it. In Origins you either stand getting hit repeatedly or you have to run away and then cast. I liked how mages felt more like they belonged in combat, rather than just jumping out of the circle tower and being battle ready.

Saying that, this is my issue with Vivienne being a Knight Enchanter. She is dressed to the nines with silks and white fabrics, wears heels and fancy head pieces, yet she is right in the thick of combat, getting all those fancy and impractical garments covered in blood? To look at, you'd expect her to be a ranged fighter...

She is in there in the thick of it to show the brutes of warriors how it should be done, with finesse and style. If you get blood on you, you're not skilled enough a swordsman, you're merely swaying it around like a fool.

IIRC your basic attacks would do the same damage with a staff (or a Rogue's bow), melee or ranged. I haven't been on DA2 in a while, but I think that was the case. I know Bianca had a retractable bayonet for close encounters. Either way I really liked how a bow-wielding Rogue would pull out a small knife in melee combat.

If I remembered correctly, I read that there should be some sort of metal armor concealed under her silk blouse. The heels though... Maybe they're enchanted with a stabilising spell?

Here I'm really hoping he would be all dramatic and showy (and all over the place sort of like Oberyn) in the way he fights.

Put to practice however, she'll get her heels tangled in her gown and her headdress caught by stray arrows ;)
