Way I figure it, the Dorian concept works better out of Tevinter. While we're in Tevinter we don't need a companion to tell us about it as much as we can see it all for ourselves.

That's true, and it really is about time we get some decent information on Tevinter. The only information we've gotten so far is from Fenris and he's extremely biased with a faulty memory.

What I think sounds good about Dorian as an informant is that he's critical of Tevinter, but seems to still want to see it succeed. He wants to rid it of corruption, but he still apparently has some loyalties and considers it his homeland. To me, that sounds like a somewhat more balanced view.

I've seen the "we aren't going to Tevinter" thing come up a fair bit, but it doesn't really make sense to me as a reason why Dorian would be cut. If anything, not going to Tevinter seems like the reason we actually have this character at all.

Dorian Pavus is an outcast. To be outcast in the literal sense means being exiled from one's country or community. Why would we find him in Tevinter? The entire basis of this character is that he doesn't reside there because he disagrees with its corruption (or because he was forcibly exiled). If Tevinter was never intended to be included in Inquisition, then an outcast magister companion was one of the better ways to get an Imperium perspective outside its borders without making the character a slaver or someone like Denarius.

There's a plausible argument that Dorian's ultimate goal would be to change Tevinter's government or society, but I think something so drastic would hardly have been in Inquisition anyway, even if we had gone there. In the meantime, why wouldn't he be pursuing Tevinter groups like the Venatori who wander outside its borders, especially if doing so weakens their supporters back home?

I think it's possibly incorrect to assume that they were ever planning on including Tevinter in DA:I, since the Dorian concept only works for a character who lives outside the empire. By definition, we were never going to find an exile wandering around Minathrous.

I think it is possible that they never intended us to go to Tevinter. We mostly got that impression from the magazine errors, I believe.

I hadn't actually heard about the Venatori until recently either, though. I believe they were introduced before I started following Inquisition news and I haven't heard much more about them since. I didn't put Dorian together with them until I started reading this thread. I wonder what they're trying to do and if they're directly tied to the veil rips. I think they've maybe got something to do with a dragon side plot, but that's just a guess.

Honestly, I think I'm going to have to search back through the twitter thread, or something, because besides their entry in World of Thedas, I don't remember the Venatori being mentioned at all, and I've been on these boards basically everyday since I bought and played DA:O.

So maybe we both just missed it, or something. I've seen it referenced by other posters several times, so I guess I just forgot it? After awhile some of the info does tend to get lost.

In the PAX demo they were cultists who kept yelling things like "He will rise!", so I think it might have something to do with a big bad antagonist.

I just did a quick Google search and it looks like the Venatori keep in the PAX demo was covered in dragon banners and pennants, which are traditionally seen as symbols of the Imperium, or maybe its actual heraldry/flag. We've seen other screenshots of indoor environments with the same Tevinter banners, plus piles of red lyrium everywhere.

"He will rise" from a Tevinter group makes me wonder if they're trying to free an Old God. I also wonder if it could have anything to do with "Sandal's prophecy", though, since he also mentioned a "he" without a name.

I wasn't aware they were even in WoT, the first time I heard about them was in the demo at PAX where Mike introduced both the Venatori and the Red Templars...

I think he's a bard.

New hybrid class- bard/chevalier. Barvalier. Perform the latest tavern songs while in festooned plate armor, survive one-on-one combat armed with nothing but your enameled lute. Barvalier, when all you really care about is fancy

You know what, you're right. I just cracked it again (mmmmm, still has that new book smell), and realized I was confusing the Venatori with the Mortalitasi in Nevarra.

Yikes, good thing other people are more on top of this. Where is my brain tonight?

Anyway, thanks!

Ah, this is the Venatori concept from WoT:

277px-Venatori_WoT.png

The symbol on his clothing is the same as the Tevinter banner.

(Interestingly, the collar has the same tassels or flaps that we've seen in other Tevinter clothing, and DHMG's outfit from the survey)

Ah, this is the Venatori concept from WoT:

I just checked the DA wiki and saw that, too.

Still, I was confusing the factions.

Apparently I need to re-read WoT when I have some free time. ^_^

I totally don't remember reading about them in WoT either, so the reference must be just one sentence in an image caption or something.

(But even so, the presence of a Tevinter faction outside the Imperium, and on a collision course with the Inquisition, is one of the main reasons I think DHMG is Dorian. A "friendly" magister character makes sense to give us an information dump about the Venatori, if they're his mortal enemies or whatever.)

Wouldn't it be great if we meet Dorian by him being hunted down by them?

I doubt Tevinter take kindly to the notion of a rogue Magister wandering freely around Thedas.

It definitely makes sense that Dorian would be related to the Venatori. I just wonder what they're trying to accomplish. Inquisition really has a lot going on between this, the elven/Eluvian plot and all the faction conflicts. It's hard to pin down who is most likely to be behind the veil tears.

Tevinter are always involved in something dark and broody, though I'd like them to have a reason to be there rather than 'It's Sinister, Tevinter will be there'.

The Venatori might even be one of the major enemy types, judging from these photos from ages ago.

I hadn't looked at them in ages but it looks like the politicians are blocking the word "Red Templars", which is the faction on the lower left. The second enemy from the right there is a Red Templar Behemoth.

If the Tevinter faction has as many unit types as those others, it's probably going to play a fairly big role in the game.

OOOOH!

Dorian: *brushes dust off robes* Many thanks for your assistance, my friends. How those ruffians managed to get the jump on me, I will never know. Delusional brutes come in dozens, now...
Quizzy: Not to be rude or anything, but... who are you, exactly?
Dorian: *dramatic hands forehead smack* Oh, how embarrassing! Did I not mention this earlier? Dorian Pavus, at your service. *bows*
Quizzy: Uh... nice to meet you. I am the Grand Inquisitor. Of the Inquisition.
Dorian: *smirks* Truly? I thought you were the Grand Inquisitor of the Empress's Pantry.
Cassandra: Inquisitor, this stranger was of interest to the Venatori, and looks to be an apostate. I would not offer him any more information than is necessary.
Dorian: *pouts* Madame, your undeserved suspicion wounds me!
Cass: *narrows eyes*
Dorian: ... I mean. Your, ah, slightly deserved suspicion wounds me!
Varric: Wait a second... Pavus... that sounds like a name from the Tevinter Imperium...
Dorian: *dramatic hands moustache stroke* That it does. In another life, not too long past, I was a citizen of the place.
Varric: A citizen of Tevinter.
Dorian: Yes.
Cass: A MAGE citizen of Tevinter?
Dorian: *annoyed* YES. I took you lot for much brighter than this, I must say.
Quizzy: Are you... you're a Magister?!
Dorian: *dramatic hands slow clap* Right then! Got there in the end. Surprise?
Quizzy: ... Well. Now we know why the Venatori are after him.
Varric: *aside to Quizzy* Your penchant for attracting individuals who attract trouble? It rivals Hawke's.

I wonder how Dorian would get along with the other companions. Seems like most people in the rest of Thedas have a very unpleasant view towards anyone from Tevinter.
