So why is he not a magister again?

He seemed to be described as a magister in the September 2012 marketing survey, so something must've changed.

 

(Or he was never a magister, and the marketing people just screwed up his description.)

Because he's a rebel?I suppose they don't want a magister who's going to point out all the problems.

And I don't think he wants to pretend things are fine either.

 

Gaider referred to Magisters to being something like a Roman Senator.  Therefore, you probably need a certain kind of influence and prestige and influence that you probably won't get if you're rocking the boat too much.

It seems common for a lot of people to refer to Tevinter mages as all being "magisters".

I'd be willing to bet that Dorian's father or mother, or both, hold seats within the Magisterium.

 

Yeah, in which case he's basically a baby magister in training - he'd inherit one or both of their seats when they died (unless he has siblings, I guess, but he was said to be the pride of the family). 

 

There has to be a way for magisters to be stripped of power (since everyone can pass the seat down to their heirs, but new magisters are constantly being created by the Circles or appointed by the Archon) and I'm a bit mystified how politics actually works in Tevinter if the Archon can just appoint anyone they like and stack the Imperial Senate. Maybe there's a hard limit on the number of magisters, and the Archon can only appoint a certain proportion. 

 

I feel like Bioware will retcon the way the Magisterium works at some point, because it seems pretty dysfunctional and impossible according to the rules that were in World of Thedas.

I would imagine that the Archon's ability to appoint people is limited somehow. Maybe there is a limit to how many he can appoint. Perhaps the Magisterium has veto power on the Archon's choices if a majority votes that way.

The only way I can see Dorian having a happy ending is if he decides to stay exiled. And only if the mages are freed. But mostly, I think he's a doomed romantic.

There are very good reasons why Tevinter should be reformed. But any kind of major upheaval among the government would affect the war with the Qunari. Tevinter, evil or not is the only thing keeping them from invading mainland Thedas.

There is also the potential to fund his revolution and smuggle him back into the Imperium. Think along the lines of what the Germans did with Lenin in WW1

I am guessing that exiled magister is someone else? Perhaps his mentor, Alexius?

I thought you can inherit the title of a magister? I take it he was in line, but due to his outspoken nature it was given to another of his sibling/family member. Perhaps even the magisters apprentice?

Perhaps that's why he left. Stript from what would've been his, he sought a different way to change Tevinter, since he lacked real political power.

It may explain his cynical attitude.

He was referred to being a member of the magisterium in that ign demo as well. Oh well.
