They're both Stroud!

Yes! Stroud and his evil twin brother who became a Tevinter magister.  :D

I hope he's the "unnamed mage" that Vivienne doesn't get along with that was mentioned in the last bioware blog entry :wizard: I'm pretty sure they're not talking about Solas since, as Allan Schumacher muses in the Solas thread, his name has been out there for a little while now.

I haven't read any other speculation about Dramatic Hands Mustache Guy, so I'm just going off of what's in this particular thread so far!

Thanks for posting that image, very interesting.

I was hoping someone noticed the not-Solas reference in the BioBlog and Allan's reply, it's... quite suggestive? At least it sort of hints that there's a third mage, whether or not that is actually Dramatic Hands Moustached Guy.

And if he's out with the rest of the party, that does very strongly suggest that he's another companion.

I think it could be him. Didn't his description tease that he is an outcast tevinter magister? I could see the Enchanter to the Imperial Court of Orlais and personal advisor to the Empress butting heads with that. Of course it also said he 'delights in being not what you expect'.

I'd love for them to have a similar relationship to Aveline and Isabela.

You'd have to think that the one person in the world who Vivienne would absolutely clash with is a Tevinter magister.

I mean, an apostate like Solas is bad enough because they're not in a Circle and can't be controlled, but at least they generally don't go looking for trouble and need to be discreet by virtue of everyone hunting them.

But a magister flaunts their magic openly and arguably 'abuses' it (according to Chantry doctrine) to rule other people. Their worldview and opinion of magic would be the polar opposite of Vivienne's, and if Dorian is in the game still his 'braven and clever' personality would surely clash with Madame de Fer.

Stroud might be Orlesian, but to be honest, he didn't seem all that animated to me when we met him in DA2.

There is something I would like to point out that seems to support the idea that he is Dorian. Looking at the leaked survey's concept art retroactively, we can identify all the characters depicted with help from the text.

The two mages with the red cloak clearly represent the Inquisitor. The green glow in their hands is interesting, since I believe it may be related to the especial ability the Inquisitor is supposed to have. Green makes me think of the veil tears. Anyway, we also have Sera, Cassandra, the Grey Warden, Cullen, and Scribe Girl, who we know for sure is not a companion. The only person here who does not seem to be referenced in the text other than her (who I repeat, is not a companion) is the mage with the mustache.

Unless, of course, he is.

Stroud shows up using a 2H weapon, then a sword and shield in DA2, then he's shown again in Heroes of Dragon age with the same appearance and a sword/shield.  I don't feel like it's him, but we know so little that it could be :)

Spoiler

Dorian's info on the leaked survey said "Dorian Pavus is a Tevinter magister. The title conjures fear of arcane master who once enslaved nations. Dorian may wield the power of the magisters, but he delights in not being what you would expect. Brazen and clever, this outcast is on a crusade to rid his homeland of its corruption."

I'm so not going to lie, I'd love for him to be connected to Tevinter, which would explain why he and Viv might not see... eye to eye.  There are some similarities between Dramatic Hands Mustache Guy's wardrobe and the Tevinter style concept art, but more differences than similarities.  I guess... they both have long coats and the shape of his hood/mantle in the Chains art is pointy.  If he's a "renegade" magister, the white could be his way of separating himself from the general image of Tevinter we see in the style concept art.  I could see DHMG being "brazen and clever," and in the leaked survey art the thing people are calling a trident looks like a staff to me.  I can't explain the sword over his shoulder though.

Spoiler

I want info on Solas for the next Follower Friday, but I wouldn't mind Dramatic Hands Mustache guy either :)

I don't think Stroud is either of them. Indeed, I doubt Stroud will be in the game at all; I felt he was an inconsequential place holder character.

I'm just poking fun.

If that is a sword, his shoulder seems seriously dislocated to me.

I'll give Stroud this; he certainly looks like he could be the star of an over the hill cowboy cop drama.

Anyway, I suspect Mustache Guy's sword might just be an accessory. Something he might, at most, use in cutscenes. Alternatively it could be he'll use it for melee attacks instead of his staff; it looks significantly smaller than the average  Dragon Age sword, so I can't imagine it would be very damaging.

Yeah, and what's the white blobby thing right under the hilt of the "sword?"

That's the blade; it's in the process of being drawn from the sheath.

It looks like a sword hilt, but the white part is throwing me off. Maybe it's just a fur detail or something around the scabbard?

That's just the image blurring due to poor resolution.

Yeah, that's probably right. It's probably just blurring in a weird way.

The top/right half is more distinct because that's supposed to be light glint off the steel.

Something else about those survey images that also struck me was the order in which they were presented.

Moustache Man is right above Sera (and Dorian was right above Sera in the text section).

They were also the first two companions on the survey page (my version has a scroll bar on the side of the screenshot :P), and Dorian + Sera are the first two companions to have text bios, before Iron Bull and Cole.

Now that I think about it, Dorian having a sword and dressing like that does make sense, when we take into account this image of a Tevinter mage:

Edit: AHHH! Tevinter batlemage picture ninja'd!

Return of Arcane Warrior specialization?

People have speculated this, yes.

Specifically, we have concept art from World of Thedas that suggest Tevinter battlemasters use swords in battle - but I suspect that Dramatic Hands Guy would need a staff too.
