I'm actually really excited about how Dorian's sexuality will play a pivotal part in his narrative. Based on what I've seen from info and the E3 video he seems like he has the potential to be the greatest gay best friend for my female quizzy ever. This lil comic put me to tears, cuz It's exactly how I picture his banter being like.

The key to my heart is NSFW Dorian.
Going back to sadface discussion (sorry BUT I FIND IT INTERESTING) I suspect Dorian is entirely optional and perhaps even dismissable in some cases. I have to wonder what would happen if we never recruited him OR sent him away after a while. I don't think we have enough intel to make any sort of educated guesses, but the possibility of him returning to Tevinter and being killed seems a possibility. That interests me. Also makes me sad... like Fenris :-{ brb crying at possible Fenris slave outcome. Maybe he just... kind of spends the rest of his life being an activist and helping people who fled Tevinter or rogue mages or something... maybe he never gets anywhere.
He seems really passionate, so I like to think with his skills, he'd always get somewhere with his crusade whether or not he had his role in the Inquisition as a boost and help with his pursuit of the betterment of Tevinter.
Maybe he'd be in Anders' position at the beginning of DA2. A big player in the underground movement... but maybe it'd always be underground if the Inquisition didn't get involved in it.
I feel like they probably wouldn't say a possible LI character could get killed offscreen. They've not done that before, have they? It seems like it's usually assumed characters are alive unless there's a situation in game that you clearly kill them. I think they like to leave things open when they can. If Dorian is dismissed, he probably just goes his own way and we'll see him again if they have a place for him in a future story, but what he does will just be up to imagination if not. I think that's how it will be with most characters. Mostly I wonder which characters can be killed in dealbreaker moments, because those seem less likely to have a role again.
Viconia. Very notorious one. People still haven't forgiven BW for that one...
They do tell us in epilogue what companions go out and do after the game, though. Dismissed or not. I'm pretty sure.

Who's Viconia?
EXCUSE ME WHO IS VICONIA?!

EDUCATE URZELF, JOE. THIS IS SHAMEFUL DISPLAY.
I haven't played the older games, so I didn't know who she was either. Interesting.

In the Lady Insanity interview with David Gaider he says canon usually ends up killing off characters so as not to have to introduce them to new players. I'm betting they're all frolicing on a farm somewhere
I do wonder about Mae and would love to find out more-- maybe Dorian knows her? I mean not only is she transgender (is that the correct term in this context? Someone please correct me if it isn't
) but her husband was a dwarf. Seems very outside the box where it comes to what the Magisters would prefer. Unless she's just so powerful it doesn't matter? At least to her magister status. She's just off the table when it comes to being considered... uh... breeding stock, as it were.
(I could see those who are particularly against her calling her a male and the like, if they're aware of her being trans.
)
It's also possible that the obsession with breeding and perfect appearances is just among the powerful Tevinter families.
If Mae was so magically strong that she rose to being a magister by other means, perhaps her family isn't as concerned with how she lives her life, or who she lives it with.

I don't think he abandoned Tevinter as soon as he decided he didn't like what was going on. It sounds like something might have happened to finally spur his exile. What that something was, I have no idea, of course, but it's possible I imagine he was trying to help from within/at least rebel against the norm before whatever happened happened.
Either that, or he actually HAS been away from Tevinter for longer and the world going to hell is what made him decide to come forward, help, and make his case known.
I wonder how old Dorian is. I know all our companions are supposed to be 'older', but I get the impression he might be amongst the younger spectrum, though certainly not as young as Alistair was.
I think it's implied that he left relatively recently, perhaps pursuing the Venatori or Alexius.
As for his age, early 30s? Late 20s? Hard to know.

Iunno, but I also feel like it's implied he's been at odds with Tevinter society for a while and whatever happened was the last straw. We don't know enough.
This should be the catchphrase of this sub-forum: WE DON'T KNOW ENOUGH!

Based on David's interview yesterday I actually think Dorian will be picked up during the main quest. Probably early on, too.
He said that we come across some companions naturally over the course of the story. The Venatori seem like a significant part of the main story. If Dorian is chasing them or involved with their plans, it makes sense that we'd find him when we first find them. He doesn't seem like the sort of character who is unconnected to the "chaos, disorder, Breach in the sky" stories, like someone like Iron Bull or Sera are.
(He'll almost certainly be dismiss-able, but I just can't see him being an optional companion. I'm pretty sure we'll find him in the main plot.)
I haven't seen the interview because I don't want toooo much information before I play the game, so thanks! That is so exciting to hear, actually. I was expecting the opposite.

From memory, he said some companions are given to the player as part of the main quest, and others will be like Fenris or Leliana/Sten - we need to actually find and recruit them out in the world.
(He mentioned that they made a mistake in not making Fenris' recruitment quest more obvious, since heaps of people missed the fact that he was even a companion. So in DA:I, if a quest is going to lead to a new companion at the end, it'll be more easy to tell from the context and description.)
Hi! I'm poking over from the Varric thread, and wanted to say hi!
We are playing the Petquisition! game right now, if anyone is interested!
Group submissions are accepted, so I thought it would be fun for all of the character threads to make their own group chart!
Check it out if you are interested, and be sure to post a group chart if you want in the OP!
