I'm not sure if I saw this here in this thread or elsewhere on the forums, but the idea that a relationship with one of the only two (so far?) homosexual characters would lead to tragedy doesn't sit well with me (and probably a lot of you guys), considering that queer representation has a history of being tragic, silenced, and maligned...

So, I'm almost positive that, for all David Gaider would like to agonise us as gamers, he'll do the character and the relationship justice as one of the few openly homosexual characters in video games. So, there has to be a happy (or at least, a "happy-for-now") end if the character aims and chooses carefully for it...

True. I'm trying to err on the side of caution, in case Dorian's romance does end in tears, but David sounded like he truly resonated with Dorian and seemed like he wanted to tell a compelling story through him. If anything, writing another tragic love story between two men would only propagate a tired and overdone cliché.

I'm not too worried. We haven't had any really tragic romances in DA yet - at least not as the only possible outcome. Though I hear it's quite different in ME - I haven't played that yet.

Hence why I'm pretty optimistic with, at least, how Dorian and the relationship with him would be handled. Of course, if you wanted it to be depressing, I believe there's a route for that as well- I mean, they did say that companions can leave if you're really shitty with them. So, I wouldn't completely rule out a "bad" ending if your player character worked for it. I just think that there would be a happier outcome written in if you romanced Dorian "right". Dragon Age series are huge on choices and I see romances as no exception.

I just know that I will aim for a happy ending, of course, and it'll be there. I want to finish the game feeling good, not feeling like ****!

Yeah. My favourite playthrough of Dragon Age 2 had Hawke, a male mage, eloping with Fenris at the end and that was pretty damn satisfying...

"We vanished into the hills and circumstance eventually forced us all to leave the Champion's side. Well... all of us except for Fenris." - Varric Tethras

I haven't played the Mass Effect series, but I heard things. Oh dear!

I simply cannot believe you have not played ME!!! I absolutly love DA, but ME series is even better. And there are some absolutly tragic romances in the ME series, but I will not mention names. I cried like a baby for hours.

God, you have so many hours of total awesomeness in front of you. I wish I got to experience the series for the first time...again. Its like virginity.

Haha, your enthusiasm about it is so evident  :) You see, the thing is, I'm not as interested in space themes so I thought it wasn't for me. Later I changed my mind and decided to try it but I don't have a computer capable of gaming at the moment. It will happen, though.

Get a console! Play! I mean, everything is better in ME. Even though its space theme, I dont think it matters. :)

Trust me, I was the same. I used to hate anything space related, but funny enough Mass Effect actually converted me. After Mass Effect, I even developed interest in Star Wars etc, after hating it for most of my life. :P

I have to disagree with you there.  I love Mass Effect, but Dragon Age has a much better writing and character development.  You have in depth conversations with party members in DA, and you get to know them.  In Mass Effect, you occasionally get a few extra lines after certain missions, and the party banter is not nearly as epic.  Just opinions there...but yeah.

While, for the most part, I think you're probably right, and that there is going to be a happy ending for the pair, I think it would depend on the type of tragedy. There are ways to do it without really doing the whole, tragic gay love story. I mean, if it was set up that, no matter what, the Inquisitor dies at the end, then I don't think it would really count. Because it wouldn't make sense to write different endings just for the same-sex options, just to avoid that trope.

That being said, I highly doubt that will happen. I think Bioware realizes its fans want a happy ending, so they will most likely make sure there's at least one way to get that with our chosen LI. However, I can see them making it where you have to chose between. the best ending for the Inquisitor (happy ending with the LI and all) and the best ending for the world, with the set up where the only way to achieve the best ending world state is for the Inquisitor to die in the end. I can see them enjoying making us chose between the two.

I've tried playing Mass Effect, but I can't aim and shoot for ****. Seriously, I tend to just go in a fight like a bloody bull half the time in Dragon Age and it served me well so far. In Mass Effect, I don't think I have that luxury without failing miserably.

Although, I would still love to play it for the story. Just... I'm just so. Horribly. Bad. At it.

So... about that Dorian... he looks to be the same height as the human male Inquisitor judging from this demo...

That, I think I'll forgive since it'll happen to all players, it's just that if the only male gay character's relationship is singled out to be tragic, well...

I suppose what I'm trying to get at is that when the story arc of the Inquisitor's and Dorian's (or any other love interest for that matter) is over, we'd get some closure that would be satisfactory, be it happy or bittersweet, and the great thing about that is that it'll depend entirely on our playing choices.

I wouldn't say "powerful" necessarily points to "tragic" at all.  Overcoming major obstacles, sure, but likely with a positive and satisfying outcome.

Play as a biotic. :D (Biotics are by far my favorite) On the easier difficulties, you hardly need to shoot at all. Just use your biotics (at least in ME2 and ME3) and if your aim is close, the biotics tend to home in on the enemy. Or at least the abilities you have as a Adept. If you play as a Vanguard, you can spam the biotic charge ability a lot. With either class, but especially the Adept class, you can get through most of the game without having to shoot.

No, I agree with you. I really don't want to see the gay option singled out for tragedy. I was just saying there would be ways to make it one without necessarily falling into the horrible cliche of the tragic gay love story. Still, I'll admit, I'm a horrible person, so I would love to see some sort of tragedy option beyond just being such a jerk that your LI leaves you. Then on days I want the sad ending, I can do that, but when I want happy (or bittersweet, I love those too!) I can have an actual happy ending too. The best of both worlds!

Powerful =/= tragic.

Dorian isn't the gay option, because Iron Bull exists.

Iron Bull isn't gay, he's bi.

Also, by "powerful" I'm inclined to think that there will be obstacles to overcome.

Right, so it's "the gay character," not "the gay option." Because there's at least 2 M/M options right now.

All right. The "gay character", then.

Anyway, I'm not sure what spurred the whole "powerful could potentially mean tragic" line of thought in the first place, but I caught wind of it.

I figure it just means it will be one that really resonates with the player. You know, a hit right in the feels, just in a good way.

Iron Bull is pansexual, not bi. Just sayin.  :P

On a much more fun note:

According to this: Mr. Weekes thinks the Dorian romance is something really special!

Edit: Okay so I just noticed this was already posted. WOW am I late on things.

Also teaches me to read back before I get excited about stuff I become privy to.

Yeah, this was my impression of it too. But I guess the concerns can be valid, I just feel optimistic that it won't just be a tragic romance.

If you don't count Morrigan, whose romance path culminates with her leaving the Warden, no matter what. A happy ending wasn't possible with her.

I doubt that will happen to Dorian though. There will probably be a 'run away with him' option somewhere, without the fugitives part. I don't think Dorian's brand of idealism would inspire him to commit acts of terrorism anytime soon.
