At this point, I think he's realized that nothing he does will ever be quite good enough for his family, which is pretty sad in all honesty. Really makes me feel for the guy.
Yeah, which explains the supposed cynicism and tinge of bitterness.
(I think if anything it'd be even *more* upsetting if your family was prepared to accept your sexuality through gritted teeth only because you'd become a conduit to influencing another powerful figure. Dorian becomes something like a pawn or a tool then, and not a son.)
I know it's hardly unprecedented even in the DA series to see families exploit their children's marriages and relationships for political purposes, but part of me still finds it really problematic.
