I think he's necromancer? No? Yes?

Sure, but if you're going to tell the Dorian thread to be on-topic, can you do the same for the other few character threads that shall not be named? Because it's ridonk-a-donk how off topic a couple of them usually are. We steer this back on course pretty frequently.

You are terrible.

I agree, unless there was some deleted posts I missed, this thread has been far more on topic then any other on the board.  If he/she wants us to tone down the sex bit they should have said that instead.  Plus again we are not nearly as bad as some of the other threads on that issue either.  It all comes across a bit odd to me.  -shrug-

Also, yeah I know I try to be the best (aka terrible) person I can be.   ;)

I'm curious of the requirements to learn Necromancy for the Inquisitor. And if any other companions might make a fuss over me learning it. I would imagine Necromancy is as highly frowned upon as blood magic. I mean if I suddenly raise up some corpses and Vivienne is in the party she will probably freak out by how unfabulous it is....

They got rid of blood magic to avoid such things I believe.  It seems like necromancy is not as big of a hot button issue, but I am hoping it does at least come up in conversation.  I am very curious to know what Dorian and quizzy can do with that specialization.

I don't know if necromancy is as big of a deal as blood magic, because the Chantry and templars make a very big deal specifically about blood magic and I've never heard anyone mention necromancy. Maybe it's just not well known in the countries we've been to? Tevinter practices it and Nevarra has a big death culture going on, but maybe it's less of an issue in other areas just because it's just not a well known school of magic. Possibly they would be disgusted once they knew, but it probably doesn't have the "boogeyman" level cultural recognition that blood magic has.

Spoiler

So, anyway, I was just concerned that this'll throw Dorian in a bad light in this case. But the writers said that the guy's charming, clever, and fun to be around, so I suppose that speaks a little about what he's capable of.

Since I prefer to play as a mage, Knight Enchanter's looking pretty good, and with Dorian around, it would be a nice complement to what my Inquisitor could do.

I was planning to romance Dorian with a Knight Enchanter, also. I don't know now that it looks like m/m relationships are getting shorted again. I was really attached to my elven rogue PC concept. Now I don't know if I want to scrap the Knight Enchanter that I was planning for Dorian originally, scrap the elf, or maybe I will go ahead and romance Dorian twice. I guess I'll decide which character I feel worse about losing and then hope I like the game and Dorian's romance enough to give it another go.

Romancing Dorian multiple times is always the correct answer.

Yeah, a part of me still wonders why there are some people who make elaborate backstories for their characters when we don't know much yet. The good thing is, we've got some aspiring writers in the forums. Bad thing is, boy, they might be in for a lot of disappointments come further announcements.

I think for now, the first two playthroughs are what I'm more passionate about, and with Dorian as the main companion in the first playthrough, all I know is that I've got the concept of a male Dalish elven mage who'll more likely side with mages and the oppressed elves, and he'll have an inclination to pick some rather sarcastic, charming, or even rude responses. And that's all I got.

Consider that I romanced Zevran and Anders multiple times, so this is not terribly unlikely. lol

As someone who made a build around the Blood Mage skills in both games I have to say I'm glad its gone. Being a blood mage never felt like being a BM when around other companions or certain Npcs. It felt like an ignored fact for something so forbidden in the game. Not to mention the mechanics just sucked, should have used the blood of enemies against other enemies instead of your allies. Never had an issue with using my own blood though. I hope the Necro abilities are interesting since I'll probably stick to the Entropy tree.

You could steal blood from enemies in Dragon age 2.  Even though I felt like DA2's blood mage was still not nearly as awesome as DAO's.  Mainly cause it took so much investment.  In DAO three ability points in and you are good to go, 4 at the most if you liked the mind control thing.

Iunno, Dorian? Blood mage? You think? Not sure. Tevinter doesn't care about BM do they? Seems kinda painful and it'd probably scar his poor, beautiful skin.

I don't think they're going to have any companion blood mages this time. People have mentioned it here and there with Solas, too, but I don't think there will be one. It seems like they thought it was too much of a hot button and didn't get treated seriously enough in the last two games. At least, that's how it seems to me.

Yeah I think another reason blood magic isn't an option is apparently they are doing away with sustainable spells.  Which grinds my gears (/Peter Griffin) , because I like spells that can be cast once and then left on.  (Rock armor for example was a must have!)

There seems to be some kind of armor/shielding thing going on in the demos though.  So I guess we'll have to take up one of our 8 ability slots for something that could have easily been cast one time and ignored.  grumble grumble...don't mind me.

Lest I go off topic though, Dorian is awesome...<.<  >.>  think I'm covered there.  phew!

Coming out of lurking because now I have a question...

in DA2 I got the impression Hawke managed to recognise blood magic by corpses brought to life in the area.... I don't have the exact moment in mind but I think I remember some dialogue along the lines of "Who raised those corpses? Is there a blood mage?" or something...

I kind of assumed necromancy is a form of blood magic. Or maybe I'm not getting something, maybe it has already been explained by someone but this has been on my mind for a while now.

You are remembering correctly, though there hasn't been a solid answer on it being always tied to blood magic.  My guess is it must be a fairly powerful magic, and it would require a powerful mage to use it, or blood magic since that makes powerful magic much easier to cast.

I think they mentioned that you now have passive abilities instead of sustained ones, so they shouldn't take up an ability slot. So you might be able to invest in something like a Rock Armor passive that stays on. But we'll have to wait and see...

Keep this on topic guys!

But we were talking about being on or under the topic.

Ah thanks, yeah I thought we wouldn't have a solid explanation for that yet. I'm sure the skills will be completely seperated from blood magic in Inquisition for the reasons they talked about, it's too serious a topic and if brought up it should be done properly. Just something that seemed odd to me, but your explanation makes sense, just gotta wait if they go into the details of this specialisation soon.

If it's gonna be one companion per specialisation I also would have put Dorian in the necromancer role, with Solas as a rift mage and Viv as a knight-enchanter. I can imagine our companions having to teach us the specialisations again... And I would gladly let Dorian teach me

There was some info in the Twitter thread from yesterday's panel regarding specialisations:

user

@ladyinsanity It's been said before that getting Specializations will take more effort than DAII. About the same as DA:O, or harder?

Ashe | Ladyinsanity ‏@ladyinsanity

@user Quest to get the person who will teach you. Then you learn from them.

So it's not clear whether this training comes your companions (because you do a companion quest) or from other NPCs.

Actually Dorian's moustache is the source of his blood magic. Don't ask why. It's a mystery to all.

I wonder why Dorian (who is apparently our resident necromancer) has only used elemental magic in the videos released thus far?  I'm so dying to see what kind of MAYHEMMMMM...the new specialization will unlock.  (sorry I stole your line Iron Bull, it can't be helped!)

Again sorry for making anyone uncomfortable I was having a conversation with my other friends who want to play the game and romance him , they were genuinely curious because I'm so happy that I am actually being represented in the game that is all :)

Anyways yes I have seen that he is a necromancer and I will give him a chance with it . I have looked on the wiki and it isn't Blood magic per say but still frowned upon . If its too creepy then I might get/make a Makers Sigh potion to unspec him ! lol

But I think he is probably a necromancer. It seemed that's what his writer profile implied and he studied with Alexius.

At the same time though, he was clearly shocked and maybe appalled at Alexius' raising Felix from the dead, which sort of implies that their necromancy magic never extended to dealing with recently-dead people.

I think it's more like raising undead and interacting with spirits, rather than the squickier stuff.
