It'd certainly be interesting if one of Dorian's relatives was a high ranking Imperial Chantry member. Maybe a Magister for a parent and maybe a Grand Cleric aunt or uncle?

It seemed like this could have been the case initially, but the last I heard, he was not an Altus, but came from a common, non-magical bloodline... is that false information? The wiki hasn't been changed and still lists him as an Altus, but I'm sure I heard that...
edit: Hm... it also hasn't changed in the "website profile" listed in the OP... this must have just been a rumor. Either that or he's from something other than Altus but still a noble of some kind? Do any die hard Dorian fans have the answer to this?

Dorian was definitely from a high ranking noble family.

Yeah, I'm searching around for info but there's no mention of this other noble class... it must have been a rumor.

Not necessarily. It's just that there has been no female members on record.

Gaider confirmed in the interview with Lady Insanity that Dorian is indeed an Altus mage, though he's not a magister.

Good. I liked him better as the son of a long line of powerful mages who rebelled against tradition. The idea that he was an upstart from a non-magical line didn't sit well with me...

Well, if his family is a bunch of social climber it would explain why Dorian is a black sheep in his family. I kind of like the idea of Dorian's parents using there children's magic to move up in society. Now, I wish I new if Dorian had any brothers or sisters.

I'm pretty sure it's always a man , in theory in Tevinter Hessarian is more important than Andraste.
That's why the men are leading the Tevinter chantry.
And it's the other way around in the rest of the world.
Edit: Or it's because the Maker is way more important than Andraste , can't remember.
I'll check WOT.
Edit 2 : Nevermind , You're right Eluvianus .
I was sure it was only men , but it's not the case .

I'm not sure about the Pavus family consisting of a bunch of social climbers, but DG's interview sort of implies that it's a powerful, affluent, and influential family descended from a long line of mages - perhaps, ancient.
As for siblings, if I had to wager a guess, I would've thought that he only had sisters. It could explain why his parents place significant pressure on him to marry and continue the Pavus bloodline.

As for marrying, it's also possible that Dorian is simply the most magically apt of his siblings, which puts on higher pressure as well. He might have elder brothers that aren't as adept at magic as he is.

Yeah, magical power seems to count for more than birth order, and Dorian has been said to be unusually magically gifted.

It's funny because the Imperial Chantry is always being bashed by non-Tevinters, but they are actually the non-sexist, non-lobotomizing-innocent-mages version of the Chantry.
There is the condoning of slavery and blood magic of course. Although not openly I think.

Has there been a female Black Divine? I can't remember.
I think it's stretching it a bit if Dorian happens to have a relative high up in the Chantry, though I'd be interested to see what he has to say about it if that is the case.

Blood magic is technically illegal; it's just that it's pretty widespread, though under the table.
And Tevinter does have the Rite of Tranquility and Annulment, though it is only used at the discretion of the magisters. And more often than not, it's used as a political tool to discredit and possibly get rid of your opponents.

I wasn't sure if I heard right that the Altus class was ancient so thanks for the confirmation.
To the bolded part: that's true and very much a possibility since he's hailed as the pride of his family.

Kind of like the actual Byzantine Empire they are based on, but with Tranquility instead of hacking off gonads and blinding!

I hope he has a catchphrase. He looks like he should have a catchphrase. No man w/ a mustache like that can have no catchphrase.
"I'm here to set things right. Also? To look dashing. That part's less difficult."
