I wasn't sure if I heard right that the Altus class was ancient so thanks for the confirmation. :)

No problem! I'm a bit of a Tevinter nerd lol

If you're still curious, there's some interesting stuff here:

Has there been a female Black Divine? I can't remember.

I think it's stretching it a bit if Dorian happens to have a relative high up in the Chantry, though I'd be interested to see what he has to say about it if that is the case.

Maybe. I do agree that it's more likely that he simply has a magister parent, but he could still just as easily have a high level relative be an Imperial Chantry member or even the Black Divine.

I'd just like to point out here that the Tevinter might well use the rite of Tranquility; we just don't know.   However, I've always felt that it would have to have been devised by mages as only they would appreciate how it could be done and the affect it would have.   It could even have dated from pre-Chantry days as a means of neutralising dissidents in the Imperium without actually killing them, as they could still be useful producing artifacts.

I don't think that all children from the mage families in Tevinter are necessarily born mages.   There has to be a proportion of non-mages, otherwise how did the Imperium function during the period when mages were banned from positions of power?   The codex, and Fenris, says that the noble families were still in control, with their most powerful members (the mages) controlling things behind the scenes.    Then Tevinter broke with the Orlesian Chantry, formed the Imperial (Black) Chantry and approved mages being in government again, when it became apparent that they had actually been controlling things all along.

Anyway, it is possible that Dorian could be the only mage child in his family, which would place even more pressure on him to reproduce.    No doubt we will find out the precise situation when we get to know him.

The Imperium does indeed have the Rite to Tranquility, as stated here, by David Gaider:

Indeed. Not all people in the Imperium are mages, however they focus on keeping bloodlines pure so that they might have a higher chance to produce mage children, i.e. inbreeding and the like.

Of course not. Hawke's family is a perfect example. Some children will be, some won't.

Still mages.

Tevinter or not, it doesn't matter. Even if we'll look at the dalish we'll see that mages are still a rare species.

I'm curious as to what happens to children born into the Laetan and Altus classes who don't have magical aptitude? Would it be similar to what we've seen with the nobility outside the Imperium where "unnecessary" offspring are brought into the Chantry to become members of the priesthood or the Templar Order? Or would they be brought into the Circle as Formari (who aren't "practicing mages") to save face?

Good question... do they go back to being Soporati, or is the Laetan class comprised of mages from non-magicals lines as well as their familes?  I'm not sure how Imperial Templar recruitment works, but the lowest ranks of the priesthood are always open to commoners.  Still, I am wondering what exactly happens to the bloodline if a mage never produces a similarly gifted offspring?  Can non-mages inherit their family's wealth and title since it's been proven that their lineage at least holds the potential to produce mages?  I must say it's hard to get a clear picture when we only have a few lines here and there to work with... hopefully DA:I will go into detail about such things... at least, I would assume so since it's so crucial to Dorian's character.

I'm pretty sure that they keep their class status, unless they marry into another family. It's just that, due to lack of magic, such people might not be taken seriously by other mages that technically hold the same status.

We saw a nonmage noble in the comics. Lord Devon, I believe his name was.

So much this. After all those gay movies I've seen, I think only 1 had a happy ending!

You should watch The Way He Looks/Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho in case you haven't already. It's adorable.

So Laeteans are both mages and non-mages then?  The only requirement is being able to prove the ability to produce mages at some point during the bloodline?  Okay, I can see that...

Yeah, you can be Laetens and not be a mage. If say, you are non-mage woman of a magickless family who produces a mage child, your entire immediate family is taken from Soporati (3rd highest class) or lower and are automatically made into Laetens (the 2nd highest class). As a result, you can have a large amount of Laetens that are nonmages. Both the magic wielding child and his entire family are Laetens.

I wonder if Dorian has been rebellious all his life, or if he started to rebel against his culture after a particular incident or series of events?

Get the weirdest ideas from that "all his life",lol.

But srsly, it seems he got a glimpse of a big picture while being an apprentice. But after they pulled out something really ugly he left Tevinter trying to stop them.

I believe in an interview someone metions there is a certaion one thing he caught wind of and he then jumped ship. Seems like this thing was just the last straw but if not the breach then something else would of drove Dorian to rebel.

I'd imagine that as he grew up, he might have been a bit rebellious as he came to understand that he wouldn't the picture perfect image his parents had for him. However, his skill with magic might have been what made his parents and peers tolerate his being "different" longer than for a mage of lesser talent.

As to what made him actually leave, Tevinter, I think it was a single event that just broke the camel's back. Dorian gets seriously fed up with Tevinter's issues, and then this event occurs, and he just chooses (or is forced) to leave.

I'm pretty sure that he's in Orlais right now because he caught wind of the Venatori, and perhaps even heard that Alexius was involved. I don't know if he actually left Tevinter due to this Venatori stuff and then followed them to Orlais.
