I mean, an unbound qunari mage sounds like he'd have so many things to talk about with a Tevinter mage it's not even funny

Hmm. If it were me, I'd also would've many questions, mage/qunari/elf or not. Being curious about Tevinter isn't strictly qunari's privilege.

I really hope you're right. I'm quite sure about Cass...but after all, Dorian is just a gay character, he's not available to the ladies as well. I don't know if Bioware will make him plot central. Of course I hope though.

PS: don't get me wrong. I think he's great. ^^

I think that's a bit of reverse logic there. You are worried that Dorian won't be plot central BECAUSE he is gay? David Gaider wrote him. He also wrote Cassandra. And Alistair, and Morrigan. Nuff said! He's like the main guy for plot-central companion characters.

Romance availability to the player is not a criterum for making a companion plot central. Aveline was one of the central characters of DAII, and she only dated non-PCs. I'd say Aveline was a whole lot more important to the plot than Merrill, or Sebastian.

David Gaider is the lead writer, of course he writes plot central characters!

Everybody was more important than Sebastian, really. Same thing with Shale. Love them or hate them, they were DLC companions so making them plot central would have been tricky at best.

He also wrote Zevran and Fenris who weren't plot central at all... And since he also writes Cassandra it could well be the case that only she is his plot central character. Of course I hope, Dorian will have plot central aspects as well, but it may be a bit controversal. I don't know for sure.

Well, if it's any comfort there are a lot of women who are super jealous of you.

But Cass and Dorian both seem heavily tied to the main plot.

I'll consider that a fair trade for Blackwall, Solas, and Cullen if that's true (and I'm hoping to dear God it's as certain as the sunrise).

I'm gonna be honest here. As much as I'm willing to shrug off the configuration of love-interests this time around, I'm still silently smarting over the numbers themselves. But in saying that, I am really really hoping that Dorian plays a huge and important part in Inquisition- as a companion, as his own character, as a love interest, as DA's first gay male character, and as a hero in his own right. This is BioWare's chance at giving the gaming industry a good telling off with solid proof that LGBTQ characters can be plot relevant, bad-arse, and heroic.

I think I'll end up romancing Dorian with multiple characters (only character I want to romance as a man and I love playing as a man) so his romance better not suck.

I wonder if they can have sex on his leather chair and/or on the throne.

I am concerned that he is going to ruin me for other romances and I won't want to do another playthrough without his LI arc in it... NOOOOOOOOOOOO~~~

They are not, but it's a "nice-to-have". Since the game's not out yet, and we're only going by tidbits of information, and we're not exactly certain of where these characters fit into place in the game's story, the numbers are just a certainty from what we've gathered.

Lord if it isn't true.  It's almost tempting to play as a female the first time and romance someone else, because I just can't see anything else besting the Dorian romance.  However, it isn't quite tempting enough...Dorian will be mine ASAP!

He IS available to female characters. He doesn't just vanish if you choose to play as female. They just can't romance him, they can still have him in their party. I very much doubt his romance will be what makes him plot central and as such I don't see how 'who can romance him' will be the deciding factor in his importance to the plot.

Also if he's 'just a gay character, not available to the ladies (to romance)' then Cassandra is 'just a straight character not available to be romanced by the ladies'

Indeed, I can easily see my human mage being fascinated with him, even if he may have to politely dissuade her from being "fascinated" with him.  Regardless, Alan described him in the pinned romances thread as, "charming, witty, intelligent, and intriguing".  Sounds like a great guy to have along, really.

Hell, my Dorian-romancing Inquisitor is just your average ordinary boring human mage, and he's full of questions about Tevinter too. Mages all over Thedas only hear of Tevinter as this faraway exotic hellhole, full of evil and blood and darkness - suddenly you meet an actual Tevinter mage, and he's not buying your elves into slavery, he's not branding your companions with lyrium under their skin, he's not hanging old kings from the ceiling with weird ancient life-draining orbs.... he's trying to make his land better and his people less awful. Just the notion that decent people might actually exist in the Tevinter of horror stories too should be fascinating to any mage, regardless of his/her race.

I didn't say that it was, but it's something else to talk about and that person was asking about qunari Inquisitors...  It stands to reason that a qunari and Dorian would at some point discuss the 500 years war that's been going on between their people.  And yes, the qunari Inquisitor is not a Qunari, but I would expect that Dorian would at least bring this up in dialogue, considering the impact that the Qunari have had on his nation.  There's also the possibility that a qunari would want to learn more about Qunari, and a Tevinter might have first hand experience with them...

It's important as of now because we have no basis on whether the quality of the romance far surpasses the quantity of romances available.

Once the game comes out, I'm positive that will change and both Dorian and IB will be far more than enough to satiate gay male gamers everywhere and people who enjoy their character enough to romance them. :)

By the way, you guys move like a mile a minute now. Where were the days were I could come home from work, sit down, and see that I could reply to the stuff I read without backtracking a million pages? ;_;

I want in on the Dorian sexy talk!

Since I asked previously you guys which character i should create to romance Dorian, I figured I'd post my full semi-final list:
Male Dalish mage: Fëanor Lavellan, Josephine.
Male Qunari mage: Ataash Adaar, Dorian.
Male human warrior: Gawain Trevalyan, Cassandra.
Male dwarf warrior: Thorin Cadah, Cassandra.
Female human mage: Rebekah Trevalyan, Cullen.
Female dwarf rogue: Arya Cadash, Blackwall.
Female qunari rogue: Asaaranda Adaar, Iron Bull.
Female human warrior: Brianne Trevalyan, Sera.
Female Dalish mage: Luthien Lavellan, Solas.

I might switch Gawain for Josephine, and I'll probably make another male qunari/another race to romance either IB or Dorian, depending on who I'll prefer in game.

I dunno man. The numbers thing seems very silly & superficial to me, for reasons I launched into a few pages back and don't really feel like repeating, but yah. Like you said we don't know the quality of the romances but even if they sucked it wouldn't be made better to then just add more gay options until it balances nicely with the straight ones.

That's... a lot of playthroughs.    Let's make an appointment for 2018 so you can tell me how they all turned out.

Oh I'm planning a LOT of playthroughs too. Not even knowing all the other game things I'm sure to want to do in several different ways, there are 8 romances and 4 races. Even if I end up not liking some options at all, still a lot of games. And I'm sure to try my favorites with different PCs... It's easy to predict I'll still be playing DAI by the time the next one comes out :) I'll go for Dorian with my elven rogue first game, then I'll see if my other ideas work.

I was like: I'll just plan 8 playthroughs for the romances ... 9 to romance Cullen with a mage and non-mage ... 12 to cover all the different class specializations ... 18 ... 20 ... 22. @_@ Goddammit. I am at 22 currently. I also lied in here previously because I said that I planned to romance Cass and Cullen before Dorian and that he would be the first "new" character I was romancing, but that was when I thought I would either hold out hope for Varric or that I could commit to a forever alone inquisitor (I managed it for a ME trilogy playthrough) ... but 150 hours of estimated game time to a forever alone inquisitor was too depressing, so my first playthrough will now be with Blackwall, and I've felt unnecessarily guilty that Dorian wouldn't be my first "new" character. XD

Forgive me, Dorian thread!

Man, I feel like I'm the only one who has no clue who I'll play as/romance yet.

I usually wait untill I'm in the character creation screen to create my character and decide who to romance when I meet the characters in game.

Inquisitor: That's it? Just a really big chair?

Dorian: It's close enough to home for me.

Inquisitor: I wasn't expecting Tevinter decor to be so...quaint.

Dorian: Well, I still need to find an elf to serve as my footstool. And someone to feed me grapes.
