Right.

I wonder if Dorian has one of these?

Spoiler

Undoubtedly.  You don't get a dapper looking mustache like that naturally... he probably spends at least 45 minutes every morning grooming the mustache alone.  Maybe another 10 minutes every few hours as the day goes on...

edit:  Actually, since we can give our companions gifts, that would be a good choice...

I reported it, that is beyond unacceptable.

My work is done.

Well, I hope it's just spirit damage, debuffs, and maybe animating skeletons at most... dealing with actual corpses is kind of gross, but thankfully I can just select non-spec spells for him if that's what is involved... lol...  Either way, waiting to find out is hard.

I kinda hope it's a little more than just spirit damage and debuffs. I hope they get really creative with these spec trees.

Wait, what? We got warned by a mod? When?

Page 464 to be exact. I don't know why that warranted an intervention even though there are threads with more NSFW content.

Yeah, I think it might be more similar to Animate Dead. His reaction to Alexius desecrating Felix's body tells me that he's probably not into that kind of necromancy.

Well, there will probably be 3 active abilities, 4 at most, going by the screenshots we've seen of other trees... while I agree with you, I'm just going by the established pattern.  My guess is spirit damage + some side effect that used to be a full spell, a focus ability, and then 1-2 summons.  We might have an AoE and single target damage spell but I don't know. (plus several passives, obviously)

What do you think?  I realize my predictions are kind of basic so if you have something less generic I'd like to hear it...

Solid reasoning.  He was pretty horrified by what Alexius had done...

3 actives would be... really disappointing.

With Necromancy...I'm not entirely sure. I imagine there might be something akin to perhaps Death Syphon, that lets you wring energy from the dead, to either regenerate mana/health. There's probably a passive that deals with increasing your spell damage for every death caused. Maybe some necromantic hexes similar to Curse of Mortality. I really hope it's not simple animate dead, as I feel that's a really, really crappy way to introduce necromancy as a specialization.

I went to that page to check it out. Seems pretty excessive for a mod to intervene there. What's wrong with that discussion anyway?

I don't get it either, but it's best to just let it go and move on. I shouldn't have asked.

Anyway, back to Dorian - I hope we'll be able to see the necromancy skill tree now that they've shown a couple of basic mage spells. I'm curious to know what his unique abilities are.

I thought it was established that companions wouldn't have one of the three PC specializations, though I could be wrong.  Have they necessarily said Dorian will be a necromancer?  (I mean, I'd love it 'cuz I'm planning to romance him with a necromancer mage, but--like I said--I thought they'd weighed in on companions and specializations.)

Have the devs said whether or not companions get exclusive specs? If all the trees are shared, he probably can't be a blood mage since the Inquisitor can't. Though considering he was trained in Tevinter, it would be cool if he knew some BM spells.

(possibly biased, since my DPS and CC tendencies thirst for blood magic)

I'm not sure about the exact source for companion specializations or unique abilities, but I found this:

"Even the Inquisitor’s companions each have access to the title’s classes and can be customized with their own skill selections." And if I remember right, the E3 demo shows Iron Bull having access to the Reaver skill tree. If anyone can find a screenshot, feel free to add or correct me on this one.

As for Dorian being a necromancer, there's nothing conclusive or confirmed yet as far as I know, but DG's comment about him hints at the strong possibility.

"This includes powerful elemental spells, as well as spells involving the control of spirit and the dead—things societies outside of Tevinter might turn up their noses at and claim “distasteful.”

True necromancy (returning someone back to life exactly as they were) violates the Cardinal Rules of Magic. Dorian might be able to do a similar "bind a spirit to a corpse" trick that the Nevarrans do.

Or maybe the title of necromancer just sounds cool?

Here is some additional information on the specialization speculation... it comes from the combat Q and A thread:

http://forum.bioware...-dai-combat-qa/

Spoiler tags just in case, but it's basically info about a specific ability that a companion has and the Inquisitor can potentially learn...  since only two people can learn it, it stands to reason that the ability in question is a specialization skill.

Spoiler

This seems to imply not only that the Inquisitor shares specializations with their companions, but that these specializations are fixed and cannot be changed by the player... so based on what we know about the specs and the party members, Vivienne fits the description of a Knight Enchanter (Circle based spec), Solas fits with Rift Mage (Fade explorer), and Dorian fits with Necromancer (various descriptions of his powers).  It's not evidence, exactly, but it seem reasonable...

Since we're only getting a single spec, and it's supposed to more important regarding dialogue, acquisition, plot etc. I'd think it would make sense that our character-defining specializations could take up over half our mapped-slots if we wanted to use all the actives, or at least half.

Can't say I'm expecting that to happen... but it would be better than the alternative I'm fearing.

Yeah, that bit about Varric made me pretty sure each companion has one of the specs available to the Inquisitor and might even be the one that teaches it to him/her. The mage and warrior ones seem pretty obvious, but I'm not sure about the two other rogue ones.

Not that I'm aware. It just seems logical that, him being a Tevinter and from a prestigious family, no less, it wouldn't make sense or not even be surprising if it turned out that he has dabbled in it. I think it's certainly safe to presume that some members of his family are blood mages, especially since blood magic gives mages an edge in Tevinter Imperium society and politics.

I figure Cole is the Assassin and Sera is the Tempest.
