I'm hoping he's either a Battle mage (Knight enchanter as it is now i guess) or a healer. There is something about a powerful arcane master using his powers to heal rather than destroy that i rather like.

As a Tevinter, I could see him as a Battle Mage...or the Arcane Knight what ever their calling them. a Master of Death and magical warfare, with a  heart of gold and a bit of a wise ass.

Ideally, I'd rather companions have their own specializations as they were in DA2, it helped define the character a little more.

Perhaps he is a battle mage who focuses on aiding and sustaining his allies health and endurance in combat, conjuring healing auras, magical shields that absorb enemy damage, and enchanted weapons.

Yes, I like that. Lets go with that.

You're not the only one. I like.

I'm a fan of the theory that he is primarily a healer. A Tevinter Magister, one of those feared warriors of the arcane, infamous for letting their selfish lust for power and personal gain drive them to the darkest of arts and the most evil of actions... who uses his power instead to selflessly aid, restore, and mend. It'd be quite the subversion, and fitting for his character trait of "delighting in not being what you expect".

I think healing as a skill tree might've been nerfed, or maybe it doesn't exist at all any more. For gameplay reasons they're no longer allowing mages to run around healing everybody every ten seconds, because it unbalances the other combat systems.

Well we know they can heal, their description on the DAI site says as much, it's just how that happens now...

This sounds excellent.

It's the idea of him being about helping others via magic, I think it's contrary to what you'd expect of a Magister.

Even if he doesn't have a healer spec in the same way as Wynne or Anders, he could still fill the same role as a defensive mage. A lot of the spells in the Creation tree (in both games) tend towards defence, so they could incorporate it into an Arcane Warrior style spec. It could also mean he may have the protective qualities of a tank (like say Aveline).

Off tank Mage is a big like for me. I often set Merrill up as an off tank, if I was playing around with mage companions. Add a couple buff/debuffs for 'sheets and goggles'. ;)

Though.... if Dorian = DHMG = the original survey art, his (old) concept art is extremely militaristic. He has almost a spear for a staff, and also a sword. That totally doesn't strike me as a defensive or healing mage, and it seems... "brazen".

(You know how Bioware's artists always talk about how the characters' visual styles match their personality and attributes.)

What's also interesting about the War Room screenshot is that it roughly kept to the outline of that original concept art (lots of characters around a map table) while changing a lot of the details - having every companion and advisor, for example, and the Inquisitor isn't as stabby.

I noticed that Cullen's outfit in that scene is now a modified version of the survey art, not the same one he was wearing in the War Room concept. DHMG's is closer to the previous art in which we saw him, and not really similar to the older survey one. I don't know if that could mean they've taken the character in a slightly different direction, although people have supposedly still seen Tevinter serpents/dragons on his clothing.

My opinion is based off a concept art that showed DHMG, I think, holding a staff and sword. That would make me lean to him being a Knight Enchanter or something along those lines.

It should be noted Varric's facial features are about as direct copy of looks of Fabio Lanzoni as you can get. As such, Varric is probably one that can be called "objectively handsome", if there's such thing.

I'm going to need him to be a healer so I can justify his presence in my party for more than his good looks and witty personality.

Of course I'm hoping he's at least bi- but if he's got to be gay, it wouldn't be the first time my lust had been thwarted by sexual preference. If he is gay, I hope he's absolutely fabulous.

I don't think you need to justify anything ;)

To be honest though, I think all the companions are easy on the eyes.

Seriously, though. It's like one of the prerequisites for joining the Inquisition is possessing devastatingly good looks. Did Vivienne add that clause to the job requirements while we weren't looking or something?

That's certainly something Viv would do. Though to be fair the only DA game we had in which some companions were less than stellar looking was DA:O, though when I say less than stellar looking I mean "Actually Old, But With A Fabulous Bosom" and "A Giant Rock Golem With Shiny Gems For Armor" so pretty has basically been a prerequisite for companionship since day 1.

Iron Bull might be the rough type, the bad boy. Some people find that attractive. It seems Vivienne made sure that there is something for everybody, and for me that's Varric and DHMG. I like the swashbuckler type.

I think he is appealing to a lot of people, some like that muscled, war scarred look. While I don't think he is attractive, I certainly wouldn't call him ugly.

I'm actually kind of indifferent to his looks, honestly.  I just like the personality that they have presented (or what little has been leaked, but that might be subject to change, a la Thane <<), and have a strong desire for a Qunari romance ever since Sten.  The Arishok didn't help matters, either.

I'm not a fan of the bald beefcake look personally, but he's got a more attractive face than any other Qunari I've seen.
