I still have doubts about how low Zevran's voice can really go (the voice was apparently meant for dwarves and Qunari, so...) so I definitely want to hear it.

Rid me of my doubts BioWare. :/

In the demo, Curry's voice was pleasantly deep and gravelly, so I wouldn't worry about that. :P The devs said it had "presence".

You know, I'm wondering if Dorian's focus is narrower than we thought. We know from his character interview that "Dorian got wind of something that his fellow Tevinter mages were doing, and decided to intervene." Now that we know more about the Venatori and their apparent plan to summon the Elder One, it seems like it was probably that.
What if his "redeemer" title starts and ends with the crazy plans of Tevinter factions like the Venatori, rather than Tevinter as a whole? We know he doesn't buy into some of the political BS, but that doesn't necessarily mean he wants to reform it.

I wondered about this, too. I mean, Maevaris from the comics is a "progressive" Magister, in the sense that she's loyal and true to her word and generally a good person. She also married a dwarf, which is just about as non mage supremacist as you can get. But IIRC, she had no problems owning slaves.

Yeah it's pretty hilarious. People were getting so up in arms, as well.

Plus, Dorian is covered in Tevinter heraldry and loves showing off his magic. I'm pretty sure that's the fantasy equivalent of an American wearing a bald eagle t-shirt while firing a gun. ;)

It is possible, but I would like to point out this little line from Dorian's blurb on the site, "Dorian would be the pride of his family- if he didn't oppose everything his homeland has come to stand for." Now that is pretty vague, but it does appear Dorian's issue with Tevinter is not just the Venatori, as the Venatori are probably a minority cult, while that line seems to suggest Dorian is opposed to something having to do with Tevinter's image/status as a nation. At the very least it seems to suggest Dorian has a lot of bones to pick with his homeland, key word "everything."  But we'll see in less than a month. Or y'all will. I've got a while more to wait after.

Good point.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if the Venatori cult contains prominent figures and has popular support in the upper class.

Tevinter hasn't had the best record on avoiding potentially world-ending magical experiments. Their philosophy seems to be something along the lines of

"Hey I have this crazy plan, probably will get us all kill-"

"No way man, let's do this!"

"I'll clean off the altar in the basement!"

"Aw yeah, count me in too!"

"I'm in! Telluricus, have your slave hold my beer!"

Vivienne: So Dorian, why would such a...charming individual such as yourself leave Tevinter?

Dorian: Well I had a pathological fear of dragons, and other serpents. Although my time in your company has certainly helped me get over it.

Well, I think most speculation right now will be more accurate than "Dramatic Hands Moustache Guy is a chevalier" :P

When this thread was first made we had no idea who DHMG was meant to be, and I don't even think many people were associating this character with "Dorian Pavus" from the survey.

It's been suggested that he's noble and a bit idealistic under all that cynicism too, so I'd tend to think he'll be against slavery.

(Then again, maybe the writers want to avoid companions who are "perfect" or agreeable - doesn't Sera hate spirits like Cole? - so a magister who was ambivalent about slavery sounds like the sort of thing they might want to confront players with.)

Maybe he's of the opinion that it's okay to have slaves if you're a "good" master to them? Kinda like how some Southern plantation owners were like, "yeah, we'd totally let them free if they could support themselves, but no one would hire them and being a slave is all they know; kicking them out would be cruel." He could see nothing wrong with slavery- just with the things some magisters do to their slaves, like kill them as sacrifices.

I personally hope he sees that slavery is bad, but I could understand from a character creation point of view why he might have mixed feelings about it. I hope that if he's okay with slavery we can talk him around to being against it, because otherwise I'm not too sure I'll be handle a romance. No matter how handsome he is, I don't think I could have a LI who thinks it's okay to own a person.

I was actually going through the parts when Dorian was announced and revealed as a male-only romance option and...

I had to shake my head at some of the comments. Like, I get the disappointment, but...

I have a feeling that Tevinter is also pretty prone to crazy cults, so I would not be surprised that the Venatori has some power. Alexius seems important. In Tevinter it might be pretty normal for nobles to join cults and start wearing odd clothing/shaving their heads. And that could definitely be part of the problem (the original Magisters who may have entered the Golden City, for example, whatever the hell cult in Kirkwall that sacrificed thousands of slaves, etc.).

It's been suggested that he's noble and a bit idealistic under all that cynicism too, so I'd tend to think he'll be against slavery.

I agree. Yet,  the writers might also want to challenge our preconceptions about Tevinter, which has be typified in the series as the root of all evil, pretty much, so a person who is surprisingly agreeable might be more possible, than say a super agreeable Ferelden, because Ferelden has been painted in a positive light.

Ah yes, those heady times when all the information about him was

(1) He has dramatic hands.

(2) He has a moustache.

(3) He is a guy.

The DHMG concept art was what originally sparked my interest, before we even knew he was from Tevinter. Probably because I would have a similar reaction to the inquisitor stabbing the table. Calm down, boss, we only have the one map!

[sidenote: Assuming that scene made it into the game, I wonder if the war table shows a huge gash in the map afterward? :D]

I remember those comments about how he couldn't possibly be from Rivain or Antiva because he was so "obviously white"... You have no idea how much I love that I will no longer be the only brown guy in my team for a game. God, I am so excited (sorry Vivienne/Solas...)

The artists did go back and revise his character look though, which I think was a great choice in the end.

I remember Allan or someone saying ages ago (it might've even been in this thread) that Dorian was originally intended to be vaguely northern European in appearance, but that changed during development.

(I also vaguely recall someone else saying that this might be brought up in the game? Dorian is from eastern [?] Tevinter, which is ethnically distinct from the regions where other Imperium characters we've encountered before came from, or something. I could be totally wrong on that though.)

A fan said that it looked like DHMG was saying "That's MAHOGANY!" and Gaider agreed, but said it would be the "lady with the bun" who said it instead.

So funny to go back and look at how wrong we all were and how we used these silly nicknames.
