Watching the Raptr twitch stream, I didn't see Dorian among the companions but Viv and Blackwall were there. Wonder if his recruitment comes later then. Or did anyone spot him?

 

edit: the char is level 5, and he's already got viv, solas, sera, cas, blackwall...No sign of cole or dorian yet i think

It sounds like either the order of companion recruitment is extremely flexible and open, or Cameron's build was modded to have those companions available. 

 

Recruiting Sera/Viv/Blackwall *and* doing the prologue *and* only being level 5 seems a bit strange.

 

That said, I'd be disappointed if Dorian is only recruitable through a story mission halfway through the game or something. That would suck.

He can't be THAT far in. I mean, he was there when Skyhold was getting spruced up. If any character was going to be last in line for recruitment, it'd be either Bull or Viv. Moreover Viv considering she's a high ranking official and she throws you a party. You'd have to build a little bit of influence to get that kind of welcome.

Good point - if Viv is the character we recruit at Halamshiral who throws us a party, it seems weird that Cameron would have her unlocked at level 5.

Yeah it did seem weird to me too that he already had so many companions at level 5. I was like, pick Dorian, pick Dorian, pi-- NO DORIAN.

This post has lots of things some people who want to enter DA:I as completely neutral as possible might want to avoid. Not plot spoilers, but if you're avoiding all media you might not know these things and consider them SPOILERS.

 

My guess is that they made it work with dev magic for Vivienne (I think she's been used a lot because she is tied to more Orlais things, and we've really focused on Ferelden in the demos, so a way to avoid spoilers). What little we know about plot order makes me think we get Varric, Cass, and Solas early. Pre-Skyhold. Then the game opens up a la DAO until some point and phase three might begin. We know the mage/templar thing can be resolved fairly early in the game, and we know that part of Venatori are based in the Hinterlands (Alexius), which is [one of] the hotbed[s] of the mage/templar plot (so the two plots might be linked), and we know Dorian's arc will involve the Venatori, so probably Hinterlands, which to me indicates Dorian can be recruited fairly early. Especially if, as we've seen, the Hinterlands is unlocked pre-Skyhold.

 

You'll also notice potentially, that another companion's *nudge nudge* recruitment arc may be in the Storm Coast we saw today, and that would mean we would have 3 of a certain class at level 5. Which seems to indicate it is possible to get companions early. If you think about it, this new demo was pre-Skyhold (we went to the war table to go to the Storm Coast from Haven), so pre-character development moments we saw with Cullen and Dorian, so maybe we get a majority of the companions even before we even get Skyhold. Which would be nice as there seems to be a large chunk of the game centered around building Skyhold up.

Fenris and Isabela took priority, because sociopath!Hawke wanted to befriend them before stabbing them in the back. Anders needs to be recruited before they appear, so I must have had him too.

True. I've been comparing the lvl 5 Dwarf at Haven-as-base to Laidlaw's lvl 12 Human with Skyhold half way done. But we really have no idea how quickly one get's to lvl 5. But in vague story progression, if we are lvl 5 and have not even gotten Skyhold yet, it's possibly early in the story. But it is possible getting Skyhold is like getting the Amell Estate, and by then you're well into the story.
