I was just clarifying. *I* am not necessarily concerned, but rather I am just saying that fans do get upset for these reasons. Also, a lot of people notice eye colour. I remember every DAO companions eye colours, for instance. Also that twitch stream wasn't HD enough to see it properly.

His skin colour hasn't changed at all, IMO. As the devs have said time and time again - he might look lighter or darker because of LIGHTING. Which is a magical thing.

O______O
You remember every DAO eye color? Damn, I only remember Morrigan's and that's because she had such unusual eyes.

Fans are fans, what's new? Some are tiffed about the unfortunate implications of potential white washing, whilst other just simply loved his golden green eyes. Change is always scary. And sometimes not so good.

Speaking gererally...

Yes but fandom is often tied to lunacy. Some fans get too attached to concept art or pre-launch builds of a character. They become obsesed and fixated. The way some fans react over Dorian, Varric, Cassandra its like they are looking to be offended. Like they enjoy the feeling of being offended.

How is it after so may decades of the gaming industry being around video game fans don't understand the concept of WORK IN PROGRESS?

By all means people should give feedback but some people really need perspective. This isn't limited to companion rage either its a result of people being generally on the whole self centred, putting thier wants above anyone elses wants and if Bioware doesn't give them their want its somehow a personal afront. You see this with just about any feature. Feedback should be encouraged but people should provide more substantial feedback than my wants aren't being catered too, simply because people want mutually exclusive things this means some people wont get their wants and that somone might be you or me or the guy down the street or the girl on the other side of the country. Every person's wants are equal, which means people have to accept   you can't always get what you want. And they should EXPECT that in a video game.

Voicing disappointment =/= fan entitlement.

And I don't see this rabid reaction here at all. Some of us are merely expressing how we feel about the change, but I haven't seen anyone threaten devs with pitchforks over it.

Stopping by to express my severe sadness over Dorian getting grey eyes suddenly :(. I love hazel. What was the reason for changing it? You'd think hazel/brown would be more common...

but let's see the change in a positive way. there are only few people with his skin color who have blue eyes, so he seems to be a really special guy. don't you think? Lots of people with his skin have hazel eyes, but only few of them have blue ones. I actually don't care about the eye color. I just hope they haven't changed his facial features as well. ^^

Or if we look at it in a negative way, the implications are unpleasant if we think that his features are being turned more caucasian (also see Cassandra having a lighter skin color now). Not saying it was intentional, of course. But hazel eyes don't make him less special, especially since the majority of characters don't have brown/hazel eyes now.

Yeah, it baffles me that brown is so rare... especially dark brown, in DAI. And, yes, it's the pseudo-whitewashing thing that really bugs me. Blue eyes are so much more common among Europeans after all, I mean, what's wrong with having a Brown guy be attractive because he is brown in all aspects? It makes me feel like it's another story of 'the whitest looking amongst the other races is the prettiest', especially because it's so rampant in the world. (The top selling beauty product, for both men and women, in India is skin whitening cream, I mean when Shahrukh Khan is actively promoting the stuff, it's hard to think that 'Brown is beautiful').

I can totally understand why some people might like to see hazel eyes on Dorian.  But, have hazel eyes really been that uncommon in companions?

Alistair (in game) - hazel

Morrigan - pale brown/amber

Leliana - blue

Wynne - blue

Zevran - hazel

Oghren - blue

Loghain - blue

Sten - violet

Anders - brown

Nathaniel - blue

Sigrun - blue

Velanna - blue

Carver - blue

Bethany - brown

Aveline - green

Varric - hazel

Fenris - hazel

Merrill - hazel

Sebastian - blue

So, if we are totaling up the eye color of the companions (minus non-humanoids), we have:

9 blue, 5 hazel, 2 brown, 1 green, 1 amber, 1 violet

Yeah, blue eyes are over represented, but hazel is pretty high too.

I loved the concept and fan art of Dorian with dark skin and striking light eyes.  I was a little disappointed when his eyes were hazel since I felt like most of the male love interests (Alistair, Zevran, Fenris, Anders) had some form of brown or hazel eyes.  Only Sebastian has blue eyes.  So I'm kind of happy for the change.  I think his eyes look amazing in that shot and it's actually added a little more fuel for the fire.  I love light eyes like that.

That being said, I do understand people who would like to see brown guys represented who also have brown eyes.  I can understand the concerns about 'white-washing'.  I think it's kind of interesting (and possibly relevant) to note that Dorian was actually much lighter in the earlier concept art and got darker as the process came along.  Of course, we have no idea what his eye color was at that point.

The thing is, if they had gone green, I would have less complaints as that is *slightly* more common. If they had gone grey, well that's equally uncommon amongst brown and white people so, fine. Blue is literally the rarest combo you can get with brown skin (with the exception of grey), it's most common amongst white people. It *feels* that stuff like this is done to fit a white standard of beauty (though, keep in mind that comes from my experience on Earth, where the white standard of beauty is trumps)... but, overall, considering Blackwall and Solas are both blue-eyed, I would've preferred some form of brown.

Yeah, I definitely understand what you are saying.  What eye colors do Cullen and Iron Bull have?  Cullen has hazel, as well, I think.  What about Bull?  Do we know?  Maybe if the jerk who started the IB thread put a good picture of his face in the OP, we'd know for sure......

Do we know for sure that Dorian's eyes are blue?  I can't tell if they are blue, gray, or green, to be honest.  I just went back and double checked and still can't decide.  I trying to find a bright spot for you Kurin!

:D Have I mentioned that you're my favourite forum friend? Cullen is hazel, and Bull is a total unknown. (Though I'd guess he'd have a Sten-ish violet). As for Dorian's, they look blue to me.

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but Fenris and Merrill both had green eyes.  There wasn't a speck of brown in them.  So it's really more three hazel eyes and three green eyes.

Fenris:

Spoiler

Merrill:

Spoiler

...Not that I really want to press this as a big, huge issue (because it probably isn't).  I just personally preferred Dorian with hazel eyes.   :P  His current eye color reminds me of Benedict Cumberbatch's eye color, actually.  Someone told me the color is called glasz?

EDIT: Found a picture with a bunch of glasz eyes.  The third one down is kinda similar as far as I can tell.

Aw shucks.  I try!  ;)

Yeah, I'm still getting nothing from that close up.  I tend to lean towards gray.  But I could absolutely believe either other option as well.  If you showed me this picture and said, "Look at these awesome green eyes!", I'd totally believe it.  Same with blue.  Same with gray.  I can't wait to see what it looks like on screen.

Sidenote:  Did he have light eyes in the 'chess playing' scene?  Or was this change made since then?

Yeah, color is a funny thing.  To me, these look more olive colored, which falls into the hazel category, in my opinion.  Aveline has undeniably green eyes.  But I can see it the other way too.

Funny story:  I have a hard time distinguishing colors.  My husband is actually color blind and is always asking me what colors things are (since he's concerned about stuff like that with clothes and decorations) and I'm like, <shrugs> "I dunno, like blueish, greenish, grayish.....?"  He gets so annoyed with me!

As a red-green colourblind man (colour deficient really), I sympathize. I hate it when I have to go to whoever I'm buying something with so they can tell me whether I'm looking at a maroon sweater or a brown one.

I'm just a sad panda because there are so few prominent male characters in DA who are not-white, and to see one of the few suddenly have blue eyes, just irritates that spot of my psyche that has internalized that brown = less attractive. I was, granted, irrationally excited to see a gay character who was also brown like myself with non-blue eyes (*sigh*... Steve).

Yes, we can argue that brown people can have blue eyes, but that is largely a consequence of a long history of European colonization, and for some people like myself, seeing brown characters with blue eyes brings up concepts such as mestizaje, and that is a loaded field with both pleasant and painful connotations. Anways. I'm just kind of bummed. But hey. I'll live.

Just having a little moment of textual catharsis. Now I've got some pots to glaze. Ciao.

Yeah, the other day, he was like, "Does this green sweater go with these blue pants?"  And I was like, "......uh, it's a brown sweater and gray pants......so, yeah, it's cool."

Since analysing Dorian's eyes in photoshop is apparently what I do, I used the eyedropper tool to try to figure out Dorian's eye colour! Here are the colours I got:

tumblr_inline_nefpne74NI1qhje00.png

I'd personally classify this as grey...? The midtones are in the yellow/green spectrum, while the shadows are in the blue/purple spectrum (all very desaturated). I can definitely understand why different people interpret his eye colour differently!

Tehehe, colours are tricky things. It all depends, because not only each person sees them differently even if not colourblind but the lightning and even the display for that matter can alter our perception. Not to mention that there's a bunch of names for the same colour and people can simply disagree on that even if they see the same.

I'd personally classify this as grey...?

I'd call these grey too, but since everybody use the term "blue" in real life - well...

I whole-heartedly appreciate your academic approach to this very pressing issue!  :D

I'm leaning towards gray still.  But, I'm holding my final judgment until I lose hours staring dreamily into his eyes see it firsthand in the game!
