Oooh, lovely art. The stache is really starting to grow on me now. It used to turn me off to Dorian. But man does he rock that look.

I'm having trouble linking correctly, but there is an interview that Stevivor did with Mike Laidlaw in the DA:I Twitter thread, and he mentions Dorian: Dorian's apparently got strong views on blood magic, conflict with his father, and is good with fireballs. Intriguing!

I like how you included Dorian in your siggy, Ceo ![]()
And I guess I'm off to find an interview that mentions Dorian.

^From the interview.
Stevivor: If you get feedback about characters – Dorian, the gay mage as an example – do you even retool them? How do you manage that feedback?
Laidlaw: They’re done by the time they get announced. We don’t build characters to ‘that’ spec. Dorian specifically is homosexual, and a guy, but he’s also got strong views on blood magic. He’s got some conflict with his dad. He’s also really good with fireballs. He’s more than just gay.

I guess we know he deeply disapproves of blood magic, then.
I wouldn't say that just yet. I think you're right, but it doesn't explicitly say he disapproves. "Strong views" could mean the exact opposite as well.

This is getting me excited to dive into Dorian's past. I only lament the fact that Mike had to reaffirm the complexity of a gay character.
What's even sadder is the interviewer is gay himself and still referred to a character as "the gay mage."

Pretty sure it's the Venatori character that the Inquisition was fighting in an olds trailer, the one people thought was Dorian.

Here's a good example of words being given more meaning than they were meant to have.
He's gay. He's a mage. He has a badass moustache. That's virtually all we know for sure about Dorian, so how else would he be described?
(Not trying to single you out or anything Hippo, your post was just the most definitive one on the subject at hand.)

No offense, but that is crap.
Of course the words have more meaning than they were meant to have. I'm sure the interviewer didn't intend it as an emasculating remark. But that in itself is a problem. Innocent ignorance is still ignorance.
What are the most central descriptors that can be ascribed to Dorian based on what we know?
He's a mage.
He's from Tevinter.
He has dark hair and a rather distinctive mustache.
He's gay.
So why does the default descriptor tend to be "the gay mage"? Why do developers have to go out of their way to explain that the character has traits more important than their sexuality? And why, as far as I'm willing to bet, will "gay" continue to be the dominant descriptor used in reference to Dorian even once we've learned all about his story and character?
Once it was learned that he was gay the fact that he's from Tevinter or he has an incredibly unique mustache go out the window. Even when one of those qualities is as much of or more of a topic of general conversation (referring to his mustache, of course). If no one knew he was gay, people would still be using his mustache (or the fact that he's from Tevinter, which is easily the most interesting thing about him) as the primary way to identify him and we'd be all the merrier.
Anyway, not trying to come off as standoffish in case it reads that way. Can be hard to tell in text.

I think they're saying it not-so-much stereotypical, but more like "guys we're bringing equality to Dragon Age, we want to make it clear, one of the main characters is homosexual"

I kinda want this to be the case. I want Dorian to be more nuanced than just the exact opposite of everything Tevinter stands for yah know? If he's just 100% diametrically opposed to everything Tevinter stands for that doesn't leave us a lot to chew on, at least from an ideological PoV.

He does come from Tevinter, which means he was raised to agree with them. At some point he went enough is enough, you guys are morally bankrupt, we need to change. He probably agree with some/most Tevinter stuff, he just hates that innocent people are being hurt.
Did I get that right?

That's possible and fair enough. If that's what KingTony meant by his first sentence then I misunderstood and I've no disagreements.
Dorian is one of the characters I'm most looking forward to. I am excited to see what they do with his character. We know just enough about him now for the intrigue to set in, but it's also just enough to leave room for a face-first fall. I, for one, think they'll do him justice and that he'll be much more than a simple binary character in regard to his Tevinter views. I think he'll be a great character.
But yeah.... two more weeks. Gah.

The male human mage. The Tevinter mage. The mustached mage.
No one would ever describe Blackwall as "the straight warden" and that's why referring to someone as "the gay whatever" is a problem.

I definitely agree, he will be a great character
