I feel your pain. If DHMG is the straight option and Cullen is the bi option, then it's likely that we'll be the ones stuck with Cullen and Solas. While I'm not too upset about Cullen (I didn't ever romance Alistair given that I was stuck with Zevran), I'd be none to happy with Solas and super disappointed about DHMG.
I think this is the problem when use the 2/2/2 approach. There are always going to be people disappointed that they can't romance an LI because of their gender. Pros and cons, I guess.

What makes you think Cullen is an awkward romance?
He's much older now and way more experienced.
