I don't think so. At least...he didn't when I became a rift mage. I was a little disappointed. Ah well, there's always head canon.

I've heard he does. I know he remarks on your specialization if you're a rogue assassin.

I am curious about how Dorian is being treated in the fandom so far - fanfiction, fanart. Are people keeping true to his characters orientation, or are they choosing to ignore it and making him straight instead?
I've always sort of avoided the Dragon Age fandom because even though the games themselves give the option for m/m, I find the fandom incredibly lacking in it.

I don't know about in general, but I tend to look through his Tumblr tag and people are downright paranoid about anyone de-gay-ing him. Although, Tumblr tends to be filled with the extremist of the extreme.

This same crap happens ALL the time with slash fiction but it's suddenly not okay when it's the other way around?
However I am shocked at how well received he is in general, mostly by the straight community. It's a huge step in the right direction!

I've never actually seen anyone trying to pair him with a lady Inquisitor through either mods or fan creations. I have seen a lot of angry posts written about people who do just that, however, so maybe it's simply not happening in my corner of the fandom.

Yeah I haven't actually seen a mod yet but I've seen lots of threats against anyone who does, which is just stupid. I understand the "ownership" that the LGBT community sort of feels toward characters like Dorian but the hypocrisy saddens me. Obviously Dorian would never get with a lady inquisitor anymore than Cullen would hook up with my dude inquisitor but that wouldn't stop me from trying.
I think it should actually be celebrated that female players want him so much!

Wow. But I'm glad these videos started popping up - I was starting to think it wasn't true that we could tell all companions to leave and only one wouldn't. Now it seems like it's just hard to do.

This is what irks me. I enjoy a measure of freedom in fanfiction...meaning if I want to make assumed straight characters bisexual, then I have that right. Now it seems all because Dorian is canonically gay, he MUST remain that way. It is a double standard and it's pissing me off. Who says love has to have a gender? Maybe Dorian could love a female given the right conditions. Anything can happen, and should happen in fanfic. It's the whole point.
Bullying orientation is something I recently dealt with in the Dishonored fandom with one flamer. It's not fun, and it's crap having to defend yourself and your choice of pairing. Fanfic is supposed to be fun, and it's supposed to be a tool to explore canon and alternate universe. If some writer made Dorian straight, or Bi, then so what? I think love knows no gender, and with the right story, anything is possible.

Honestly I just find it disappointing because there are so few canon gay characters, and relationships as it is.
It's sort of why slash is so big in a lot of fandoms. There is just not that much canon m/m in any medium, so people kind of HAVE to make it up if that's what they want. There are always straight male characters, and f/m relationships to be had, but very rarely do us queer people get an incredible character like Dorian representing us, and sometimes it feels like a slap in the face when people try to erase that part of a character's nature.
I am not bashing anyone here though, just was curious about how Dorian was being treated.

Thank God for YouTube, I'd never get to see his crisis point otherwise. Ouch, the Inquisitor certainly knows how throw a punch.

Hah, I'd probably never have a guy as my main character if it wasn't for him, so he deserves props for that.
Though I adore the friendship he has with my female Inquisitor to little pieces.

I wouldn't call it a double standard. In a culture where being anything other than straight and cis is frequently treated as an aberrance - like, there are even camps where assholes send their kids to "cure" their homosexuality - writing a fanfiction where a gay character is in a relationship with a person of the opposite sex carries different implications than when it's the other way around. Not to mention how abysmal representation of LGBT people is. I've read so many confessions from players expressing how happy they are to finally be able to see themselves in the games they're playing. I can barely imagine that, because I've never not had people like myself represented.

I tried talking to Dorian after specializing in Necromancy in my first file but he never really said anything sadly. :c

As far as I know Dorian only comments on your class if you go Assassin or Templar oddly. I've done all the mages and he said nada. Vivienne gloats if you go KE, and Solas is Solas if you are a Rift Mage. ![]()
I don't really even consider Dorian a Necromancer, that's something mostly Nevarran no? I think they just needed someone for the third class and picked him since he kinda fits.

Explain how so? What is the difference between me writing a canonically straight character liking his/her same gender, and a gay character liking the opposite sex?

I never really viewed it as such before. I was in the camp of "Straights go gay all the time in fan fiction!" I mean, I'm delighted to have Dorian be one of the better gay characters I've seen in video games since... Cortez? Maybe? But always viewed fan fiction as just that, fiction made by fans.

If you're an assassin he tells you you'd fit right in in Tevinter and the same "don't kill all the things without me" as a Templar it's just a short history lesson on Tevinter Templars.
And if you go Templar, he thinks you smell sexy.
