That's actually a really brilliant interpretation and is totally fitting of a gay man in his first relationship. (Not that I know by firsthand experience or anything... :( )

*Hugs*  I know these feels. =/

I can't help but wonder if Dorian's doing his "this relationship is too good to be true, let's poke at it and see if it collapses" thing. He's one of the most besotted companions I've seen in a DA game (and there's some serious competition), and just going by the look he gives your Inquisitor during the victory celebration, I can't see him completely throwing that away even to go on a moral crusade. I can imagine him trying to "push" the Quizzy just to see whether his lover would ever give him up, or whether he's prepared to put up a fight for Dorian. His reasoning for not taking the Inquisitor with him is...shaky, to say the least, so perhaps he's more interested in seeing his response. As a player, the intuitive response would be to go for the "I want what's best for you" option and avoid the emotional blackmail, but Dorian seems pleased if you tell him that you need him by your side. I would have expected him to put up a fight - who wants to put their entire life on hold because their lover's kind of needy? - but it seems he's looking for an excuse to stay.

Do you officially break up if you encourage him to go? Or does he just mention heading off to Tevinter more often?

He appears to be the inverse of Zevran, who didn't like to be rushed into a relationship and had to be given his freedom if you wanted him to choose to stay. Dorian desperately wants you to commit, and needs reassurance that you want him just as much as he wants you. Either way, I suspect Dorian would maintain the relationship long-term, even if there was a period of separation. Heck, even flirtation-on-two-legs-Zev managed long-distance fidelity (if it weren't for the dratted bug).

BTW - the animation for Dorian is absolutely stellar. His writing is also top notch, but you can learn an awful lot more about him just by watching his face. His dialogue might be glib and sarky, but the animation is telling a completely different story. Someone took a few screen shots just before the fade-to-black of his love scene, and he actually looks scared/nervous...which ties in with what Cole said about his thoughts before deciding to sleep with the Quizzy. I really hope that was a deliberate choice.

Seriously great write up.

As far as animation goes, my favorite moment is when you don't have sex with him. He gives this half-joking half-serious answer of "What do you, a relationship?" The inquisitor says "Why not?" and his reaction is just pure raw emotion. In those few frames Dorian expresses his fears, love, and hopes for you and it just gives me all these feels.

But I am weak and must have sex with him. Dat booty. :P

I say if a transgender mage married to a dwarf can still be a magister then Dorian (being an only child and heir apperant) can be one too.

Sure, there'll be controversy but that's politics. Also, the current black devine was also Lambert's friend and wanted to reform Tevinter for the better and he was made devine despite that.

So I can see Dorian still going to Tevinter to try and push reformations.

I'm just imagining Dorian becoming the Black Divine and doing a Leliana on us.

Nope. It went something like Mike Tyson punching a 2 yrd old kid.

Yeah, that punch was way overpowered. Not even Solas got knocked to the floor. Just rude.

Divine Dorian...we'd never hear the end of it. Poor Quizzy would lose every single argument on principle. Bonus points if the "historical meeting to reconcile the Tevinter and Southern Chantries" turns out to be Leliana and Dorian hanging out with the Warden and Inquisitor, while critiquing their underlings' footwear.

This has been bugging me for a while now, and maybe it's already been asked but...should "Let's spend time together" trigger a cutscene for Dorian? It does the cutscene fade-to-black, but just dumps me back in the library. Is that a bug, or is his snarky dialogue all we're supposed to get?

As far as I can tell, it is just a fade to black and then return to the library situation.

There's no cut scenes. It's just supposed to illustrate that you do spend time together off screen.

My favorite is when he wants to go find Cassandra and pretend to be talking about her, haha.

Didn't the other romances get a quick cutscene though? I could be completely wrong, but I think someone mentioned there was a scene for the Cassandra romance...

Hopefully, it's not another universal bug, like the Zev cameo in DA2.

Well, you do have the kissing scene which will play every time. I think all the romances have something like that.

Ye. You can get a 2 second friendly roof time with sera, dont know if its different if you romance her?. She says the same thing for me over and over. Sad no cutscene for Dorian but at least he says more than three words and it changes up sometimes. I dont think advisers get even that? Cullen only got a kiss option.

Great article on Dorian and why his personal quest is so deep and well elaborated: http://gamingtrend.c...e-dorian-pavus/

(if someone already posted it here, please forgive me. I only found out about the article today.)

Hi all!  I thought you guys would have an answer to a character question I have about Dorian.  I love him and his friendship arc very much.  But why would he call the Inquisitor his only friend?  He's charming and outgoing; is it because he doesn't allow anyone else to get very close and all the charm is on the surface? Trust issues?  I understand how he's essentially self-exiled himself from Tevinter and how he might not have any friends there, but what about in the Inquisition itself or elsewhere? His personality is pretty warm, and it seems like he would enjoy friendship with people who would offer it, and it seems impossible that the Inquisitor is the only person to offer it.

He just lost one of his good friends, Felix, to the Blight so he's kinda alone out in Southern Thedas. Depending on his personal quest, you were the one who helped reconcile him and his father. You were there to talk with him about his issues and even encouraged him to help Tevinter (or stay selfish and keep him around... whoops!).

Keep in mind, too, despite his personality he is still Tevinter, a very very hated country that is associated with slave trade and blood magic. Making friends in Southern Thedas where that is all but abolished (HA elves... anyways) is hard. The Inquisitor's group is even distrustful of him because of his relations.

I think people have trouble getting over the fact he comes from a powerful family in Tevinter. At the end he talks about how differently people are suddenly treating him, so I got the sense that while he is a social butterfly and would make a great friend, the sigma connected to being what he is and where he is from made it very challenging to have a true friend in the South.

Inquisitor: I'm glad you're here after all that's happened.

Dorian: I fully expected to die, it would have been thematically appropriate. And you! You could have been a martyr! Oh, the songs they would have composed.

Inquisitor: There will still be songs.

Dorian: Yes, but they won't have the same gravitas. We'll have to be satisfied with being alive. And together. I've decided to stay with the Inquisition. For now.

Inquisitor: You will?

Dorian: There's no you in Tevinter.

They definitely still left themselves an out for Dorian to be off doing his own thing at some point, although hopefully he and the Inquisitor will still be together even if they're not physically attached at the hip.

No, I mean in the last line post-credits when he's back in the library. Someone posted it before:

If you don't speak to him at the party, you get a cute dialogue where he says to himself "He'll come speak to you eventually Dorian. He has so much on his mind". Then post-credits he and the Inquisitor have this exchange:

Dorian: Staying in the South could prove interesting. One's always warmest next to the fire.

Inquisitor: That's the only reason you stayed?

Dorian: Not the only reason.

It's after the last fight, the only real spoiler in it is the identity of the new Divine.

Removing that tidbit what he says is:

Dorian: "Staying in the South could prove interesting. One's always warmest next to the fire."

Inquisitor: "That's the only reason you stayed?"

Dorian: "Not the only reason."

Then there's another one that's the same one most people have got.

Dorian: "It will be difficult returning to Tevinter after all this, leaving you most difficult of all. I'd rather almost let the Imperium rot. Such is my lot. Just a little longer then."

It seems like, oddly enough, the line you get here depends on whether you talked to him at the Skyhold party.

I'm going to test it later today, since I have saves just before the endgame.

I was thinking (and I haven't finished the game, but I've already gotten spoiled on everything so what the hell) my boy offering to go with him would be a nice option. But then there would be some discussion about it not being safe (seeing as he's a non-mage elf, and a very pretty one at that). But what about a mage Dalish? Fenris' sister was a mage and was learning under a magister, freed from slavery, so wouldn't a powerful mage, despite being an elf, not have the same concerns that a non-magical elf would have?

Or he could offer to pretend to be Dorian's "servant" but I see Dorian as being too prideful and in love to let him do that XD

You can offer to go with him but Dorian refuses, saying (jokingly) that the Inquisitor would end up doing everything and that this is his fight to wage.

Tell me about it.

My Dalish was depressed .

Spoiler

And by the way totally random but I really liked Felix , hey he's not much on screen , but you could sense he was just a nice dude.

Who knew that agreeing with Dorian on something could be so hard.

I told him to go back home if it was something he really needed to do. I don't consider it the end of their relationship at all. From what I've gotten out of his character is that he wants to fix the problems of his country on his own and not "use" the Inquisitor to do it for him. He was always worried about being accused of using the Inquisitor.  Dorian also seemed very intuitive, always watching and noticing what the Inquisitor is doing.  I was actually surprised by his remarks about how I was running all over and checking on companions. "How come none of them check on you, rub your shoulders, peel your grapes..." lol! He also mentions how everyone is asking you for favors because you are the Inquisitor and he doesn't want to be one of them.

I'm also sure rumors were spreading about them getting close so who knows what Dorian was dealing with behind the Inquisitor's back "I'm the Tevinter Magister who is using you...that's what they'll say". So I believed him when he said he didn't want to bring the Quizzy because he would just do all the work. I think he was right about that. I love that Dorian doesn't just want to be the boyfriend of the Inquisitor, he sees him achieving great things and want to do great things as well. I admire that and trust him to go back to Tevinter and kick some a**.

But not now. :crying:

Yeah, I'm not bothered by the lines implying he'll leave for Tevinter at some point. It's clear that he wants to continue the relationship and that he's not leaving next week and that's enough for me - no need to be attached by the hip.

I got the same impression. It was the first time I'd been compelled to say "No, don't go; stay with me!" Instead of "I want what's best for you." After he'd been so worried about the rumors, so worried about bothering me with personal requests, so worried about my well-being in general. Just so damned *considerate*, I felt like he might have thought he was a burden and was looking for a way out. It's sweet.

I think Dorian is animated better than any other character in the game. I specifically always think of the scene where he turns down a female Inquisitor. There is so much *character* in his body language. It's really amazing to watch.

Okay, I have nothing really ground breaking to say other than that I ADORED the Dorian romance and this character in general. Seriously, what a babe! And his facial expressions when he's emotional! My poor heart.

Also thank GOD I'm not the only one who was made really, really uncomfortable by the Bull/Dorian romance! That squicked me out something fierce and made me want to sit Dorian down and plead with him to get out of that horrendiously controlling and abusive relationship. Like wow, I loved Iron Bull in my first playthrough when I romanced Dorian, but I sure have a sour impression of him now. I don't think I'll even recruit him next time I do a non-Dorian romance. No Iron Bull means no emotionally abusive and belittling relationship.

........ "How come none of them check on you, rub your shoulders, peel your grapes..." lol!........

That line made me laugh out loud. It's "feed you grapes..." in the german version. This phrase planted that funny image in my head, how the inquisitor is sitting on the throne, with his companions actually feeding him grapes, fanning him with palm tree leaves and Dorian rubbing his shoulders. Now I want to see fanart of this...
