Heya, I just finished the Dorian romance and I have a question and figured the Dorian thread would know.

So at the final scene after the big victory party Dorian comes up to your room. And I just can't figure out what the hell he's talking about. "You are terribly dull and I hate you," he says. Um... what? I mean, I get that he's not really serious, but still... what? And then my quizzy's reaction, raising a non-plussed eyebrow and just kind of wandering off to the balcony? I'm just really not getting it. I have no idea what's going on.

So I might've accidentally written a lot, but hey! It explains it from my perspective.

It's a Dorian-ism. He never says "I love you" because he masks his feelings behind sarcasm and jokes. Everything he says he means the complete opposite of. "You're terribly dull and I hate you". You're literally the most exciting person atm and you're the only man that has ever wanted to be with him, so of course he loves you.

 

"I hope this ends soon". This part could go several ways. One side tells me that he wants all this inquisition stuff to end so you two can go live alone somewhere and not be bothered by the trappings of their responsibilities. The other one (which imo is more likely) is where he's using his sarcasm to prepare himself for what could happen. Meaning, he's waiting for you to say "Good bye, I don't need to be with you anymore" it's happened so much to him that he's just waiting for it to happen with you. But it won't (I HOPE!) and he's telling you, in his own way, that he doesn't want to leave you.

That is just Dorian being unable to talk about his feelings. He doesn't handle the 'feels' well. It is why whenever he is upset he goes into humorous monologues about other things, such as archdemons (instead of dealing with the idea of Corypheus and his homeland) and your library (instead of being afraid for you)

I didn't choose "Corypheus must be stopped" in my first playthrough, but the romance worked out just fine for me. I reloaded a save just recently to test it and Dorian usually greatly approves, if you choose that option, so it seems like a bug in your game. However, it was really easy to gain Dorian's approval in general, by just being nice to him (sided with the mages). Much easier than for some other companions in my opinion.

 

His personal quest and everything started to happen quite quickly for me, after reaching Skyhold. Even before I further advanced the main story, if I remember correctly.

Hey, I didn't need to backtrack. Dorian's repeatable kissing scene worked when I loaded this morning. I just needed to make sure I don't skip through too much dialogue when I activate it. His personal quest seemed to have a similar bug. (maybe more similar to Bull not materializing in Skyhold if I approach him too fast) When I saved right outside the tavern in Redcliffe, it was empty when I reloaded it to see how it could play out. I needed to fast travel back to Redcliffe to get it working again.

 

I have to say, I'm really liking his romance more than Bull's at this point. In fact, I'm finding myself a little cooler on Bull this playthrough, mostly because I know I'm gonna have to kill a goddamn dragon before I get any more conversation options with him. Why is he, of all companions, like that? SMDH, Bull, life's 2 short to spend much of it going out my way to murder megafauna for the approval of communists.

 

My one complaint about Dorian's romance is not really about Dorian, but DAMN, male elves are skinny. I feel my dude's head is maybe a bit too large for his body? He should share some of his head-size with Bull, make things more proportional for the both of them. I was not really bothered by the male elf model too much before. (and I'm still not, really) But, if he's gonna be that little, I'd prefer they didn't imply the Inquisitor topped. Not really a big deal, though, just a personal preference. Also, look at his neck in the (NSFW) second picture:

Male elves and horned qunari are gonna have so many neck problems if they live their lives like they appear to in Inquisition. If I could tell them one thing, it would be, "treat your necks better; they're very important."

Haha, yes, I love my tiny, skinny elf, but he is definitely dainty. I headcannon to myself that he likes to switch, so I'm not too concerned about any implications of him being a top compared to the much more massive Dorian.

 

It does amuse me, though. Dorian is one fit mage. My Lavellan is a rogue, so I'm not surprised he's so tiny and lithe (though a little more muscle would be good). I just find it funny that Dorian could probably (easily) bench press him.

I'm mostly the top in my relationship and I'm five inches shorter than my boyfriend (I'm not not short, he just happens to be mega tall), so if I did favor Lavellan over Trevelyan, it wouldn't bother me. Though my boy did say he'd fooled around with other men before, I personally prefer the idea that Dorian did the topping. The whole "I'll be more explicit in my instructions this time" and my boy's "show-off" comment lead me to assume that Dorian took the lead, and with my Inquisitor's personality, and Dorian being the one to come to his room looking for sex, I am totally okay with that.

 

I have a mage that I plan to pair up with him, who I headcannon as a virgin. Might make more sense for him to top at first, seeing as... uh, uncomfortable as things could be otherwise. And then he can be all "first man I really like and he likes me back *puppy love*" because I am sappy like that.

A perfect headcanon (or canon) for circle mage Inq, actually. 

 

I also like the idea of mageInq being all "Tevinter magister altus mage? Cool as f-ck!". Because for a circle mage (especially if he's not fond of the Chanty's teaching) it's kinda cool to meet someone who's not afarid of magic and doesn't hate himself for being a mage. So refreshing. 

It's a shame we didn't get something about that in dialogues.

I was a bit disappointed in the ending as well. But like the other's have said he's just being himself: sarcastic, maybe a bit protective of himself. Still, I was kinda sad it wasn't some sappy ending!

 

But I think they want to keep it somewhat open-ended, maybe for future DLC etc. (or maybe I just hope so lol)

I also like the idea of mageInq being all "Tevinter magister altus mage? Cool as f-ck!". Because for a circle mage (especially if he's not fond of the Chanty's teaching) it's kinda cool to meet someone who's not afarid of magic and doesn't hate himself for being a mage. So refreshing. 

It's a shame we didn't get something about that in dialogues.

He's gonna be a Dalish (it's a... thing... I can't help it!). But he's not met that many other mages, and will find Tevinter intriguing. And a human that's not terrified of magic? Awesome! He was quite sheltered though, despite being First to his clan. Very out of his element, bewildered, and defensive. He'd rather be back "home" with his clan, unlike my rogue who's enjoying adventuring (though he does miss his people). I already know he's going to hate Vivienne haha.

 

But yes, Dorian will be the fascinating new shiny. If the game had the option, he'd probably end up pestering Dorian nonstop about magic. Maybe a bit too much fawning at first before letting it grow into a more serious respect (I know their ages are technically the same, but I think this mage would be a bit younger and more naive than my rogue).

 

I'm sure Dorian would appreciate the attention regardless. Might see if I can reign in my enthusiasm and not trigger the romance too soon, do some adventuring so they can have more time to get to know each other as friends and let it flow into a relationship more subtly.

 

I am putting way, way too much thought into this. How sad is my life?

I know this may be almost blasphemous, but I would have rather the butt scene being that uncensored version than him randomly standing there looking around the room. It just would have fit better even if it meant we wouldn't have gotten such a long look at his bottom.

Haha well, that was funny the first time I saw it. I think Dorian was just posing and showing off more than anything. Just the way he was standing there and talking, I never got the impression he was actually admiring my boy's "appointments."
