I'm gay and don't like him. He seems to be purposely written to be that annoying gay best friend - the kind you would see the lead in a chick flick have.

Right now the best gay romance options I've seen were Kaiden and Fenris. The leads just fell Into those relationships. Neither were over the top flamboyant and were just normal dudes who fell for the pc. Also not a ton of dialogue dealing with a "coming out story" like Dorian, or odd "do you like boys or girls" convos with Zevran or Anders.

Out of them All, Dorian is dead last on my list and now have straight inquisitors.

You're completely entitled to your preferences, but that definitely was not a coming out story.

It is if your inquis blurts out the "I've done that before" line.

So, Dorian has a coming out story because you have the option to come out to him? Ok...

Whatever the semantics, the entire scenario was tired.

I'm not usually one for m/m (just isn't my cup of tea) but after my first Inquisitor befriended Dorian I was compelled to make another character for him, because the poor guy needs a hug.

Also, does anyone else want to me Mama Pavus in the future? From Dorian's description of her it could be quite entertaining.

Mama Pavus is still Lucille from Arrested Development in my mind.

I mean one time Dorian was like "oh a lake , mother used to take me swimming at the lake.Well I mean she stayed inside , but she send a servant with me!"

I think it's more tired to criticize a character for something that literally didn't happen, but whatever you say, man.

No - my main criticism is that I find Dorians mannerisms and personality annoying.

The personal quest bringing up gay conversion magic and the daddy issues is just an aside and not really the main point. So it wasn't a coming out story but it was still a cliche.

Also good job with the sarcasm, dismissive attitude, and personal attack over my not enjoying a fictional character. I can almost see the eye rolls.

Is 'The Magister's birthright' bugged for anyone else? I completed the quest but it's still under current quests.

Did you do the War Table mission for it? You have to do a follow up on the table unless you're a human male rogue or warrior, I think.

Playing as a human rogue, no war table mission.

Playing as a human rogue, no war table mission.

So you took the threaten his reputation option in the dialogue? If so, then I have no idea.

While Dorian does have that "flamboyant" gay side, I have issues with the two aforementioned gay characters in comparison.

DA:2, everyone was Bi. Every. Body. The romances just kinda slide into each other regardless of gender and created a really... weird feeling. As if the entire Free Marches (or just Kirkwall) was a hub for the bi community.

And Kaiden was a complete conversion because... reasons? It was rather disconcerting, to me, to have characters just switch their sexuality at the very end of a story. Now Cortez was a great character, but romancing him was.... wrong? I guess that's the word?

I feel weird for actually being OK with the "Do you like guys" or "Coming out" type dialogue, because how else am I supposed to know if said character has a particular orientation?

I just played the Iron Bull romance, but liked Dorian's romance much better - more depth, I think.

I only got the scene with Mother Giselle badgering at Dorian in the library today, (decided she's really quite a cow), despite having really high approval with him on my first playthrough too. Now I'm wondering what else I've been missing *sigh*

Dorian is just absurd for me. I like his patriotism and his hatred for the Venatori but he is just a kind of immature, crybaby, badlooking ******. I am sorry if someone here likes gay characters, I have nothing against it - but I do not like him and he is just absurd, I mean a powerful mage who is intelligent and knows a lot of books and then>>>>>>> BOOM I STATE THAT I HAVE DADDY ISSUES and I M so gaaaay! This does not make sense to me. I think they kind of cliche- ed his story. And he is too gay in the classical sense, I cannot stand the " Oooh, I m so sea sick and I want to be away from the water!" comments

I guess if his portrayal had a good impact on at least some gay players then that's all that matters, regardless of some of our views on him

I confess, I love Dorian but I think I'd love him EVEN MORE if his story wasn't about being made heterosexual by blood magic but something else.

Like, his dad wanted him to become a Magister.

Dorian doesn't want to.

So his dad intends to brainwash him.

It's kind of like the X-men. They're great pro-tolerance media not because mutants=blacks or gays but because blacks and gays are in the X-men hanging out.

That's my take at least.

That's a misconception, though. It varies by country and even in the more tolerant places, it's still considered an oddity. It's just not criminalized anywhere and there's no religious dogma against it. Even before DAI and WoT, there was evidence of it. Leliana, Zevran, and Anders all are hesitant or defensive about their sexuality at first. Isabela's the only one who's completely unabashed about it, which is fitting since she comes from the most socially open-minded country in Thedas. (Fenris and Merril don't talk about it at all.)

And Dorian doesn't have any angst over his sexuality. He accepts himself. It's his father and Tevinter culture that has the problem.

That's still pretty tolerant even if it's not the magical land of sexual acceptance. What I'm getting at is Dorian is such a rich character that I think the story would have benefited if they'd not felt the need to do the "Gay Therapy" plotline because that implies Dorian's character's primary quality is his homosexuality even if it's related to his Tevinter-ness.

People like Krem because Krem's transgenderedness is acknowledged in the setting, viewed as a little strange yes, but is just a factor in the character.

I think they went a little overboard, is all I'm saying.

I think a stronger storyline would have been presenting Dorian's plotline with something related to his status as a "Good" Tevinter like facing escaped slaves from his house or something.

I *WILL*, however, mention that a lot of the complaints I've seen about Dorian amount to veiled homophobia, though, usually the (relatively) mild but still offensive, "I don't dislike gay people but I dislike it being in my game."

I've seen enough articles and confession posts about how important Dorian's quest was to them that while it may have been a little psa, I still think it was great (especially because the animation and voice acting was top notch), but we can argue about it all day and some will disagree and that will be fair (and some will be slightly homophobic about it, but I won't engage with that person). So here is a lovely picture of Dorian that I found. Picture is under the spoiler tag because of size.

Spoiler

I can't draw, but one picture I would love to see is him doing the red scarf dance he was talking about in Halamshiral. Anyone else have a favorite picture or scene they wish to see?

Well it's good to note you can just say you're gay, thinking that would make a good argument... Whatever. If you are indeed gay, then you're even worse. So which is it? Str8 homophobe going for lame "I have gay friends and they're ok with me voting they have less rights then a human" or in this case "I'm gay and he is too effeminate so a cliche" nonsense? Or, self hating gay going for "he's not str8 acting enough... gives us a bad rep" idiocy? Congrats in both cases.

Dorian is just absurd for me. I like his patriotism and his hatred for the Venatori but he is just a kind of immature, crybaby, badlooking ******. Again with the veiled "he's too effeminate" nonsense. "Too gay in the classical sense"... really? Just say you hate the "icky gay" and be done with it. Sheesh.

You and the other naysayer..to each their own, but someone being seasick does not make them...gay. Not understanding that one. At all.

And his more seemingly narcissistic traits and mannerisms are really a front. He's a spoiled rich boy, yeah, but how many spoiled rich boys leave everything they know, their life, their family, and seek to redeem their country by being the only one to stand up for what's right? He even says his reasons if you talk to him. And his snark, his so-called whining can be called out in certain situations, and he even admits "yes, I was whining." It's his defense mechanism to keep his true feelings from being criticized and rejected.

This blog explains it better: http://maiafay.tumbl...-surface-dorian

Dislike him all you want, it's your right, but you're only judging him based on surface traits, which says much about you :) Everyone has their reasons for the way they act.

We've argued about his personal quest a thousand times in here, so I'm not going to bother to go in depth with it again. But I will quickly say that Dorian's issue with his father wasn't about his sexuality, it was about his refusal to play along with Tevinter's cultural traditions. As Dorian says himself, homosexuality activity is accepted in Tevinter as long as it's just physical flings hidden from sight and as long as you keep up the appearance of heterosexuality by submitting to the arranged marriage and further your bloodline by creating more mages. But Dorian refused and that's what set his father on that path. It wasn't discovering that Dorian was attracted to men and thinking that it was inherently wrong.  It's an issue that doesn't even exist in the real world because religious dogma always attaches a component of inherent shame (or sin) to homosexuality itself, rather than it purely being an issue of rejecting cultural norms. And that makes Dorian's story unique rather than cliche. It's entirely a fantasy genre story because it's impossible to recreate outside the bounds of the fictional world, even when you take magic out of the equation.

But people don't see that because there is a boat load of projection when it comes to gay characters in media. People tend to take any acknowledgement that a character is gay and truncate a character to being "just gay," no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary. It's just confirmation bias colored with heterosexism or even internalized homophobia depending on who it comes from.

Well, the last one wasn't even slightly homophobic. It was blatantly so.
