Alright... I know this will seem absurd, but I've been trying to figure out how Dorian's outfit works. I did the same thing with Fenris a few years ago [his is just a batman belt over a tunic, which is attached to gauntlets via buckles + skin-tight pants]. Dorian's is way more complicated and I have no idea how he gets dressed or undressed.
Although I don't know what they're attached to, his pants are pretty straight forward. On top of those are knee and shin guards attached to boots that are fastened with side buckles.
His entire upper body is a mystery. Image in spoiler tag below.
There are 4 main leather straps.
1 Green
2 Red
3 Purple
4 Blue
* Red and Green are attached to each other via the Yellow anchor.
* Purple is attached to the main leather of the armor and serves no function that I can see.
* Red doesn't seem to serve any function either.
* The straps and ties in Orange also seem to have no function.
* Blue is his main belt on the hips that goes on last, which you can see when he is wearing actual armor. On this belt are two books (b1 and b2) and what I think might be a flask**. Blue is attached to the Yellow anchor via a chain going from the book (b1) to the anchor in the Pink circle.
I had been thinking that the light-colored parts on the chest were a separate layer over a cloth tunic (with collar), but then they would have to be attached to the pants in some way. The more I look at it and imagine it with without the belts and straps, the more it looks as if this is just a single body suit.
** It's interesting to compare Dorian's mage armor to that of the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor has a book, but just one. The Inquisitor also has a vial, which I assumed to be lyrium; perhaps that is what is in Dorian's flask -- no, despite the previous conversations here, I doubt he actually has booze in it, he's not Oghren. The Inquisitor also has a knife, and Dorian does not.
Spoiler
Dorian's outfit is like the Fade, incomprehensible. Though it is interesting to see just how many of Dorian's belts are completely useless. It is like he put them on just to make the Inquisitor's life more difficult as he tries to take them off.
