I think part of why it stings to much is cuz Dorian was right, wasn't he? It was temporary, in the end the Inquisitor did 'leave' him. No amount of time will ever be enough and all that goodness will be inverted with added heartache interest if when one of them dies. Relationships man. I... need to go read something fluffy.

Hm... it depends on how you look at it really. Some people might say that any amount of time, no matter how short, was worth it. I'm not referring to the "It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all," hackneyed phrase. I'm referring to knowing and loving a specific person and truly believing that your life is better having had them in it than not, even if it did lead to sadness.

Okay I have to share this with literally the only people who will understand.

I spit out my coffee in the car yesterday laughing when I heard this song, because it got to the chorus and all I could think was DORIAN.

If phones were a thing in Thedas that chorus would be Dorian's ring tone.

While we're on the subject of music, I have this a a possible romance theme:

Yeah I know. Mind you I don't understand  it but if we got into my views on love it would be extremely longwinded and off-topic so I'll just say that I hope future!Dorian has found the wisdom that current let-me-bait-you-with-escape-routes-to-see-if-you-leave Dorian presumably hasn't.

I've seen this before and it is seriously amazing.

The art flow of seeing both of them age, how the constant message just keeps popping up "Just a little longer" and then THAT ENDING! GAH! It's seriously beautiful and I love it in the most depressing way. It's like Charlotte's web, except Dorian.

It's a punch to the gut, and I've got it saved. Sometimes, I leave it up in a browser window with it scrolled to that fourth panel because damn, and then I end up reading it all the way through and getting my heart torn up all over again.

To everyone: Sorrynotsorry. I had to share the feels. I wanted to post this when I first saw it on Reddit, but I've never posted in this thread before. So ah...heckuvan introductory post, eh?

As someone who's only had one three week long relationship...I'd rather have time with someone, even if it's short. Don't mind me, I'm just going to go off over here and play the Dorian kiss scene over and over.

Bah, I think I got the Dorian bug again. At least I think I do. It's on my female elf. I wanna be Bffs with Dorian. :crying:  This time I've been speed running it so I have no idea what I did this time. lol! I'm at skyhold, haven't met Vivienne or IB, or Blackwall yet and probably never will. Hopefully it'll pop up, if not then oh well, I'm just playing her to romance Cullen and Solas over all. But still, Dorian!

**Btw. I'm using the armor and Weapons mod on Nexus. I've got Dorian equipped with double daggers and I have to say he is pretty bad ass with his Necromancy skills +duel wielding. I'm gonna see how his skills are with a two handed sword next. :D

I thought I had the bug in my current playthrough, but I got the quest, it just wasn't instant like it was during my first one. I talked to him some more, did a couple of quests, and came back, then it triggered. I suppose I didn't have his approval high enough? I can't wait until the wikia for DA is updated enough for us to be able to instantly check how much is bug and how much is gameplay.

Dorian is a lot like Jack when it comes to the whole romance department. He's so afraid that everything is going to turn sour or come crashing down at any moment so he wants to keep some kind of failsafe option around just in case.

There's also the feeling that he's not entirely comfortable with being the Inquisitor's boyfriend. He genuinely loves Adaar/Cadash/Lavellan/Trevelyan, but he's not big on the title or what people will assume about him because of it. Which is pretty interesting, since Dorian is the first Bioware character that I can think of who isn't happy when we use our "Because I'm the Protagonist" power to help him solve a personal issue.

This is just me, but if/when Dorian goes back to Tevinter I'd be willing to bet that it's going to be pretty hard for a romanced Inquisitor to not have the advisors give him a helpful little "nudge" every now and then. Or this:

Dorian: Varric, I know he sent you.

Varric: You know Sparkler, not everything revolves around the Inquisition.

Dorian: You've set up shop at the tavern near the Arcanist's Hall, why would you be here other than him asking you?

Varric: I'm on sabbatical, Sparkler. They haven't rebuilt my tavern back in Kirkwall, and after what we just went through I decided that taking some time to visit family was a good idea. The senate's in session so Minrathous it was.

Dorian: So the three casks of Ferelden beer and my favorite chair from Skyhold showing up at Maevrais' town house at the same time as you did was just a coincidence?

Varric: No, the boss wanted to send a little care package for you. He understands that you need a little space for...whatever it is you're doing.

Dorian: (sighs) Please tell me that you didn't have to drug him this time.

I've got it for the first time on my third play through. :( I know I have his approval up really high, due to his dialog choices, but I'm past the Temple of Mythal and still no quest. :( I guess no being besties for my Adaar.

I've been lucky, I guess. I've gotten his personal quest with no problem with all five characters I've gotten that far with.

I agree, I do like writing some angst. It's good for character development and exploring issues. I have an angsty character who (I think) has pretty good reasons for being that way, but he's going to improve over the course of the book. It helps that he's got a friend/lover who likes to poke at him about his issues and try to get him to work through it. It's going to be fun progressing through the tension between them before they finally get over it and get together. There's no "suffering" there though, no major depression or suicidal thoughts. I've been there too often to enjoy reading it in fiction.

But then at the end of that book, some horrible things are going to happen, so I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I don't want to read it, but apparently I am going to write it. Woe to the author who hurts my favorite character, but one of mine is going to get disfigured. I think for me, when I write it, I know how it's going to end. That "everything is going to be okay" (not perfect, not sunshine and rainbows, but the boy is going to get the girl boy and help him through his tragedy while becoming a stronger person after dealing with his own). When someone else is writing, I don't know if they're going to kill the character I feel the greatest bond with, the one I find most interesting, the one who may not be the hero but is just as important to the story. That not knowing bothers me. I am that person that skips to the last chapter at the first hint that my favorite character is in dire straights so I can know and prepare myself for what happens.

When my favorite character dies... I never read that book again. I've read some books half a dozen times because I love the characters so much. I've stuck it out for a decade or more to finish a series (here's looking at you, Dark Tower) only to be... let down about certain events. And while in the Dark Tower series, there is an argument to be made that things can be "okay in the end" because of what happens in the last few pages, it's not spelled at, it's only a hint. There's enough real life tragedy around me, I want my stories to have hope, and not the bittersweet kind.

/soapbox

I maaay be a little guilty of making characters a wee bit too angsty when I write fic.  :?  Though it's mostly realistic angst so I don't feel like it gets too overboard most of the time. But I also hate writers that get overly angsty to a point that it surpasses all believability and ruins a story.

Ditto on the character killing though. Some writers just don't seem to be able to grasp that a story can be good, even great without anyone dying, but ambiguous endings are almost worse in a way because sometimes they just aren't satisfying and you don't feel like any real conclusion has been occurred.

On the Dorian leaving front though, I don't even like to think about it. I mean, I could see the Inquisitor meddling quite a bit, or maybe even following him and stalking him anyway, but I like to think it would go something like that comic, sans the last few pannels.

What system do you play DA:I on?

He might have to go back eventually, he's next in line for House Pavus' seat in the Magisterium. He could do a lot of good in the position, and as Mae has shown nobody will publicly mess with you when you're the head of a noble household. Also I really want to meet her in the future, she obviously knows Dorian judging from her letters from the War Table.

Ah. I played DA:I first on the PS3 as well and I never had any issues with doing his personal quest, but when I got my PS4 his personal quest bugged out and it never allowed me to do his reunion quest. It wasn't a big deal since that PT was not a romance for Dorian, but I will have one coming up...so it bugs out again I will deeply annoyed. I really hope that bugs with Dorian's quests are resolved in the upcoming patch.

Unless I missed it(and feel free to correct me), I don't believe this has been posted: http://fc05.devianta...han-d8cyrm7.jpg

Enjoy. Or...well...enjoy the art itself, at least.

I can see their relationship ending up like my Warden and Alistair's; two people who have to do important things away from each other. There are visits and separating is harder each time, but they do it because they believe in what they are doing themselves and also in what the other is doing.

Time to descend into bizarro world now. Someone did a thing of Dorian sans mustache. I think he looks a lot younger. o,o

You know, Dorian has issues with relationships and such (like, them not existing), but I bet he had legions of girls (and some boys) admiring him in his school days. I certainly know I would have if he were a classmate of mine.

I have mixed feelings about this. I mean, there was a time I wished Dorian would get rid of the facial hair, and I must admit he looks quite dashing without the 'stache - also a lot younger. But then again I've learned to love everything about him and I swear he has a little brush somewhere just for his glorious moustache. Conclusion: it would be a cool mod but I don't think I'd ever need it.

I am with you on this one. I am just so used to seeing the mustache, that he looks odd without it. I know if I was given time, I'd probably find him just as handsome, but right now I just feel like part of his face is missing.

Seeing Hazegurl's forum sig has reminded me of something I've been wondering about for a bit. I mean, I can't ask Dorian, so I'll ask you all. Do you all think there is a sort of Harrowing ritual in Tevinter?

I recall some NPC dialog talking about the Harrowing as being cruel, and I think you have the option in the mage origin to speak negatively about it. My canons are usually mages and I tend to look at things different from others. I've always looked at the Harrowing as just a test. I don't much care for the ritual and secrecy surrounding it, but it is a test nonetheless, with death as the consequence of failure. However I think mages should be allowed to prepare for it more fully, like with the SATs or something.

One of the banters between Dorian and Cole contains a reference to a test, and I got the impression that it was a practical magic test since his father was there watching, and not like the Harry Potter OWLS or something along those lines.

My mage girl would probably pick Dorian's brain about all of this stuff. The view on magic is so different in Tevinter that I really wonder how it influences their education.

I think that it is the Harrowing, but they have a milder version of it up there. I vaguely remember him commenting on how because there is less fear about it, the harrowings in Tevinter tend to be more pleasant (why he went to a Castle with grapes and pillows and chatted with the demon). I am pretty sure he mentioned that in one of his banters, though I don't recall which one, maybe to Vivienne or Solas.
