I've taken all four paths at mages vs templars and have still gotten it every time. I've also exhausted his dialogue at Haven before and still got it. I honestly don't think there's one specific thing that causes it, which is why it hasn't been patched.

Do you also avoid talking to Varric and Hawke on the battlements before getting Dorian's quest?  I think that also has an affect.

I'm pretty sure that was the first thing I did on my initial play through. Lately I've been putting it off, though.

His romance quest is always the first thing I do after I get Skyhold. I do not speak with other people, they are not important ;) .

Interesting.

I may experiment a bit on my next playthrough. Since I won't be romancing him, it won't be as critical if I somehow trigger the bug.

On the subject of Mama Pavus, Dorian really only comments that she still thinks he's about five if you bring it up at the Winter Palace. It could be that she's a little overprotective since Dorian's the only heir, which given the whole "they don't like each other" with Halward might suggest that she wouldn't approve of a blood ritual that could turn him into a vegetable.

If the Tevinter Circles work anything like the southern ones they take in apprentices as soon as their magical potential shows up. So odds are Dorian got shipped off to the Vyrantium Circle, underwent his Harrowing then went to Minrathous to apprentice with Alexius. Halward's a Magister so he's most likely in the capital on business most of the time so he probably saw Dorian a lot more.

There was also that comment about her taking him boating and then him saying, well the servants (I always found it interesting he called them servants there and not slaves) took him boating while she sat inside with a cool drink. I think she really could be seen either way and it just depends on how you wish to interpret the two mentions she gets (besides the fact his parents hated each other) and how bad the family dynamic was at home.

Dorian... *sigh*... I felt liked I needed to show him some love, so here I am. I have NO idea why the Josephine & Dorian's romances were the last ones I chose, because they ended up being a couple of my favorites. Dorian especially. And now that it's over, I feel empty, like I want to continue it, but I can't!!!  :(

And yes, I've seen all 8 romances, and therefore played the game 8 times now. I have no life. At all.

(For the record, I'm a heterosexual female, but that effected my enjoyment of Dorian about zero percent. I was completely immersed regardless, even on my 8th playthrough. Well done, writers!)

... and while its not on the wiki he also has one if you sacrifice the chargers and he tells bull there last thoughts

Oh wow... I don't sacrifice them (Yeah, I'm a bad leader and make decisions based off emotion), and I also don't run around with Bull very much so I wouldn't see this one. That's heartbreaking.

Welcome to the best thread on the forums!

As far as being a heterosexual female goes, I think it can be argued that many of us here are basically living vicariously through our male PC in regard to the Dorian romance. True, we have no idea what it is to be a gay man in real life, but neither do we know what it is to kill someone, wield magic, or lead an Inquisition. I would say the same of gay male players who make a fem Inquisitor just to romance Cullen (or a fem Warden for Alistair for that matter). So I do think there is an element of our own sexuality that bleeds over into our PC. But our PC just happens to be a man.

[This is just my own perspective as a straight woman obviously.]

I've never found my own sexuality an issue when it comes to romances. Especially in BioWare games where you make your own choices and create your own character, I find it easy to immerse myself with the story and take the role of the MC easily, regardless of their race or gender. Even when I play a male and romance a female, I like the characters and their relationship all the same - it's kinda like watching a romantic movie, in a way.

I do admit that romancing a male as a female does leave a bigger impact, as I am a straight woman, but it doesn't mean I couldn't find other romances enjoyable. Actually, I'd go as far as saying that I prefer gay romance options because I get to make a swoonworthy dude whom I can stare at through the whole game AND I can romance a male. It's a win-win situation really.

Did I digress? I may have digressed. Oh well.

I'm guilty of the same, but I feel like only bad leaders totally ignore the feelings of those around them when making decisions. Plus sad Bull is just so hard to watch. He does have a lot of great banter though, especially with Cole and Cassandra, he doesn't have such great defense stats but he's worth having in the party sometimes, if only for the adorable Cole banter.

I usually reconfigure Bull to use sword and board. Two handed and Reaver require a lot of micromanagement to keep alive and the party AI isn't that bright.

^ I don't typically like changing a character's play type for RP reasons.

The huge amount of followers is always a source of frustration for me. On the one hand I'm happy that there is such a large amount to choose from; there are bound to be some that you like and a higher number increases those odds. But I usually have my handful that I run around with and don't like to change, so I always feel guilty about leaving the others behind.

Yeah, nine party members makes it hard to choose. I've taken to just recruiting who I need for each playthrough.

I can't bring myself to skip recruiting anyone, even characters I'm not particularly fond of and/or never have in my party. Which is kind of a waste of time to some extent given that I tend to talk to them less and just end up feeling guilty that I miss all their banter because I just alternate the characters I do like and I never have the one's I'm not over fond of in my party. I also feel like if they hadn't been trying to include so many characters, the characters that were in the game could have been more developed and had a closer relationship with the PC than the couple of friends and ton of colleagues they ended up being.

Yeah, but who is to say that the fewer characters would have been ones we liked. Maybe no Dorian! Besides, I think they had enough development as it was. It actually seems like the same amount of development as in DA2 excepting that it's not spread out over three acts of the game.

I was wondering something.  I'm doing my second playthrough, femquizzy, and I was wondering, if you aren't romancing Dorian do you still get Magister's Birthright? Sadly, it would seem that my bff and I have run out of things to say to each other - I guess I may have been too chatty too early lol - and I'm not sure what, if any future Dorian-related quests a non-romance playthrough presents.  Thanks!

^ No, that is a romance related quest. Dorian is specifically concerned about how the Inquisitor helping him will be viewed as him using the Inquisitor. This then leads to the quarters romance lock-in scene.

Granted I think he would feel this way about a fem Inquisitor too, but because he only sees her as a friend there isn't this additional element of concern. Don't forget that the amulet quest happens after you and he discuss the "rumors" about the two of you in the post-Giselle conversation, so he is already aware that there could be potential problems.

I've been wondering about this quest though... Quests that are structured in this way -- an npc has some issue but you only know about it under certain circumstances -- do bother me because I wonder whether the issue exists for both world states.

Dorian comes down south and sells the amulet for money. This should be true whether you play a male or female Inquisitor. But we don't get the quest as a female Inquisitor, or perhaps even as a non-romance male Inquisitor (I haven't played a non- Dorian romance guy yet). So does he never get the amulet back in those cases?? That kinda sucks...

I assume in this case that either a.) he never sold the amulet in other cases, or b.) not being in a romantic relationship with the inquisitor (of either gender) makes for less rumor of them being in a relationship (because they aren't) and thus the merchant agrees to return his amulet without attempting to manipulate the inquisitor who he is less close to.

But I have to add that I do enjoy the addition of romance quests in this game even if some are rather small, on top of getting unique dialogue during separate companion quests like we did in DA2. It really does allow you to see that side of romanced characters you wouldn't otherwise see unless you were in a relationship with them; their insecurities and secrets and their softer sides. It makes you feel closer to your LI when your character actually gets to see that side of them in game rather than having to head-canon it all.

So I'm a bit frustrated at the moment regarding Dorian's bugged personal quest.

It's my second playthrough and this time I decided to conscript the Templars. I'm pretty sure I have high approval with Dorian but nothing triggers.

I did a little experiment though where the quest did trigger:

I let the Magister in Dumat Shrine live, thus gaining a "Dorian disapproves". Once I get back to Skyhold, the talk about Alexius triggers then Mother Giselle shows up in the main hall like she is supposed to.

But I reloaded and decided to give the poor guy a merciful death, so no disapproval from Dorian this time but I can't have the Alexius conversation anymore.

TLDR: Basically, you have to loose approval with Dorian to trigger the conversation that leads to his personal quest? I know his quest is bugged, but I didn't have any problem in my first playthrough with high approval with him

Yeah, I was surprised that I still got the Mother Giselle 'rumors' convo with my femquizzy, but I guess it makes sense that people would be worried about Dorian's undue influence on me just by being my bff...I hate not getting the same quests, because I'm trying NOT to romance Dorian EVERY playthrough (see above re: femquizzy) lol

Because I love the lighting in Dorian’s Cubby Hole of Reading and Sass, here are some vanity shots of my lugheaded Dorianmancer, Maxwell Trevelyan (I’m not good at naming original characters, ok). I don’t have the PC version (which is how I’m guessing most people get their gorgeously shot and posed Inquisitor screens) so have to take whatever photography opportunities I can get.

OdwZMWr.png

He looks really pissed in the first one so I’m going to headcanon that Dorian’s just made a hilariously catty critique of his Skyhold pyjamas (he’ll forgive him, naturally).

Still not happy with his hair or jawline but I can’t be arsed starting over so whatevs

News on Patch 3 just released and they will be fixing some of Dorian's bugs. They don't say when it will be released (or at least I didn't see it when I glanced through), but at least it will be fixed soon.
