He tells Cassandra that he was always begging his parents to take him to see a necropolis when he was a little boy and he's initially sounds boyishly excited to discuss spirits with Solas when he finds out Solas also has an interest in them. So, I always assumed it was for passionate intellectualism in the same way being fascinated by dinosaurs as a child would makes someone want to become a paleontologist as an adult.
Dorian might be a fatalistic guy (No seriously, he brings up death quite a bit, dark humor and all that.) but at least he's not one of those necromancers like Quentin.
