I don't known for Sword and Shields but I known that Dorian really likes to enrage Cass. When you pick the "let's spend time together" option, sometimes he says "We could find Cassandra and pretend we're talking about her. It would drive her mad" :)

I've always thought Dorian has great affection for Cass but her rigid self-control drives him to pick at her mercilessly to get her off balance so she reveals her true nature.  I noticed the Inquisitor has the option to do this as well at certain times.  I also thought he sounded as if he had a genuine disdain for that book but enjoys a moment to take a jab at her about it.  I think behind the scenes they are BFFs.

Because...  <subtext> Cass shares a similar affection for Dorian.  Enough to share her guilty pleasure with him.  Shared with him, not you.  You had to catch her at it. :P

Ugh... so I finally got around to doing The Iron Bull's personal quest again. After discussion in this thread I purposely stalled around for almost an hour and I still didn't get the banter between Gatt and Dorian. I got a normal banter between Bull and Cole and between Bull and Dorian, and also between Gatt and Cole, in addition to the standard ones with Bull and Gatt, but no Dorian and Gatt.

SO IRRITATING!

For me it has a lot to with I have very strong feelings about what are private things and what are public things, and pretty much everything Cole talks about falls into the private category. So it makes me feel uncomfortable because I know how much someone bringing that sort of stuff in front of other people would bother me. It's a personal failing of mine ;)

I agree completely with this. That said, Cole's banter with pretty much everyone has great bits of characterization that you don't find anywhere else in the game. The multi-part banter with Dorian is a particularly revealing one in this regard. There are so many players that just see him as the sassy mage because they don't bother to pay attention -- or just didn't have the opportunity, to give the benefit of the doubt -- to things like this.

Dorian is such a nerd.

I agree!  He's clearly a scholar and loves to dig through dusty old tomes when not on quests.  I find it rather adorable and plan to have my Quizzy tease him about these tendencies in the fic I'm writing.

I wanted to take a screenshot of my party in new equipment. (We are no longer pink!)

Yuyana, your quizzy, from what I can see, looks a bit like my current quizzy (not the one pictured in my avi).  Same hair color, ears poking out at the same angle... even the face shape. I'll have to post a pic of my current quizzy to see how close they are.

To the question on fun companions to bring along with Dorian, I did like bringing Sera and Blackwall a lot.  Blackwall clearly wants to be friends with Dorian as time progresses.  He likes to tease him about  his drinking habits and sounds a bit in awe as he does.

I also enjoyed IB but now that my quizzy is romancing Dorian, I don't want the big boy to flirt with Dorian!

I've just started to bring Viv along with Dorian and they started to snark at each other, and I don't remember the exact quote, but Dorian basically shivers in pleasure and says, oh it is so on!  So I know it's only going to get better from here lol.

I also want to bring Cass and Cole on more often and it is cute to bring Solas along to hear him and Dorian nerd out over magic together - Solas though has a tendency to drop a "slavery" bomb in the conversation every now and then tho.  <_< .

There is a great bit where Dorian asks Solas how he learned to do a certain bit of magic because it's a Tevinter technique and Solas replies it isn't from Tevinter. I sort of felt bad but it was also kind of adorable.

I'm simultaneously playing another character, to finally do Cullen's romance. It's going really slow, because I can't stay way from my Dorian playthrough

For more Dorian goodness, I ran her through the mage quest line, and found this bit at the conclusion incredibly funny.

When Dorian shows up at the end, saying that he'll stay and join the inquisition all the girls turn to watch him leaning in the doorway. Josie's mouth is even a little open with a half-smile. Cullen is the only one looking away, like he's forcing himself not to stare. Either that, or he's noticing how the girls are staring. Not that I blame them. <3 I might have to put Dorian in black, and replay this scene. Just because.

Dorian, the lean:

5XsRZCA.jpg

Please do this! Dorian in Black, Leaning. Yes. Please :D

Also, I really like Sera's banter with Dorian.  They're so different and Dorian asks her a lot of questions, and then they sort of develop a brotherly/sisterly teasing thing:

Sera: Demons! Flappy robes!
Dorian: Thieves! Dog stink!
Sera: Culty sh*ts!
Dorian: Treacherous teyrns!
Sera: What? It's not a proper game of 'Your people are sh*t' if you make up words!
Dorian: Teyrn is a Fereldan title, beneath only the family of the king. I'd have expected you of all people to know that.
Sera: You're...well, that's...Smartasses!
Dorian: Too late! I believe that's my round.
Sera: Pi*s!

He constantly has to explain his vocabulary to her, to the point that she she hysterically asks:
Sera: What's the point of words you know, but others don't? Who would you say them to?

Eventually Dorian tells Sera he's never met a free elf, and he is glad to have met her.

I really recommend listening (on youtube) to all of their banner.  There's stuff in there not in the wiki ("oooops! Demon") that is **hilarious**.

Don't have Cole or Solas in the party. So far I've noticed that they override Dorian. Probably better to bring Varric, someone "safe" and you should get him picking at Dorian.

I used to get a bit angry when people go on and on about Dorian being this super confident sassy mage because he is far from it. But then I remember that they either don't like Dorian as much and therefore didn't pay much attention to the character himself or the banter, didn't bring him along much, got the banter bug and didn't want to be spoiled by youtube, or just didn't like Cole and didn't recruit him or bring him along often. Then I just gloat to myself about how much insight I have on him. ^_^

That sounds so cute! I wish the IQ could have teased him about his reading habit.

I had Solas and Dorian in my party when I went to see Gatt, with Iron Bull making up the party.    Dorian was the first to start on Gatt; it took me a bit by surprise because it was so unexpected and I was thinking "pot calling the kettle black" because he did seem to have completely missed the irony of a Tevinter noble going on about slavery.   So I picked the response that was basically both sides have their faults.   Then just up the hill Solas starts on at Gatt, at which point Iron Bull steps in a tells him to cool it.   It was interesting that he didn't feel the need to step in when Dorian was speaking.      Given how much anti-qun feeling was flying around, I can't think why Gatt was so surprised when I backed the Chargers over their dreadnought.

It seems that this was one time when I did get a conversation that other people don't always get because normally I seem to miss out.

I've had him pegged from day one.  But I'm also full of sarcastic bluster and wit that started as (1) a way to keep people from asking the wrong questions.  (2) Cover up the soft, nugetty center.

Include that Dorian loves the bottle so much that even Josephine runs an intervention and Dorian adds up to a guy with insecurities and poor coping mechanisms. But I grew out of it so my headcanon says he does too.

Gatt?  I'm running companion names through my head and not coming up with who this is.

Not a companion, he's the elven contact in Bull's quest.

I've always gotten Gatt's dialogue with Dorian. Be jelly.

I've had another random thought about Dorian and that is, do you think he has a gambling problem?    I was looking up the conversations between him and Varric in the Wiki (because I've never had them in the party together) and it seems practically every conversation involves some form of gambling.

Then I got to wondering, where does Dorian get his money from?    He was meant to be so badly off that he had to sell his amulet.    Does the Inquisition pay some sort of stipend to the Inner Circle?    I know Bull and his Chargers are paid officially from the coffers as mercenaries.   Sera gets the kick backs from her schemes.   Varric has his own merchant operation.   Vivienne probably still gets something as Court Enchanter and anyway I should imagine her lover had her nicely set up (she'd have insisted on it).   Cole wouldn't care about money and Solas has more important matters on his mind, so neither of them would be bothered.   That leaves Blackwall, who may be getting funds from Grey Warden sources, and Dorian, who has no discernible source of private income at all.

Oooh that guy.  Yes.  I often see player made abbreviations and acronyms that I have to work out when I first seem them.  I was thinking Gatt might be one of those moments.  I get it now.  Thx.

Dorian disapproved.

Spoiler

He is a rebel, he will not "hold position" just because I want it  . So I have a few screenshots of Cassandra, Solas, Inquisitor... and Dorian's behind. Hmm, I guess it is not bad ;) .

(I wonder if he did it to get that quest mark on his ...)

Are you kidding me! Dorian and Vivienne are the only ones that can pull off wearing dragon webbing.

Eeeehhh... yeah...

But seriously, I believe the Inquisition at least feeds, clothes and houses their men, so it's not like they want for basic supplies.

And my Inquisitors probably buy Dorian dales loden wool robes and gilded nugs, if he wants them...

Considering the silly things he and Varric wager on, probably not.  It's probably a game for both of them to try and liberate some coin from each other.  We may not hear how many times he's won :)

There are a number of ways to spin it to explain how he has coin.  My thought process is thus:  There's no telling how much he was able to stash aside from the Amulet.  If it was chosen to make up with the Parental Unit, Dad may have given coin or other things to be sure his son had what he needed for a prolonged stay. The IQ gives him his armor and weapons.  Food and board are probably automatic to anyone directly assisting the IQ.  Doesn't leave much for him to spend on other than personals, booze and wagers.

This is how I think about it. Also, in one of the dialogs Dorian asks that he be paid with candied dates, so it's not all about money.

I always thought the Inquisition must pay something also, above room and board. Dorian had enough money to try to buy back his amulet. He does always worry about people thinking he's just using the Inquisitor for what he can get, so it makes me think whatever they get is somehow equal for all the companions. Sera makes out that list of things she wants! I love reading how her list changes over the course of the game.

In regards to Blackwall, I doubt he ever got warden funds. I'm guessing he stayed as far away from the real wardens as possible. He had no idea what was going on with them, which he would've if they were funding him somehow. I'd guess he got paid from people he helped (or offered him shelter because they thought he was a warden) and mostly lived off the woods.

They all seem to have gambling issues, I blame it on Varric. Someone's always losing their pants while playing wicked grace! :P

The personals, booze and wagers could amount to quite a bit.   I don't think our lovely Dorian likes to stint himself when it comes to his appearance.  He's not the sort to simply hack off his hair (like Sera), no he'd have a proper barber.   I'm sure he'd attend properly to personal hygiene and want the right soaps and oils.   Admittedly he is wearing the same casual outfit throughout his stay, as do we all.    To be honest, with the amount of gold I always seem to amass, with nothing to spend it on, I should imagine that Quizzy wouldn't mind if Dorian helped himself occasionally, even though he'd probably protest like mad that he couldn't take advantage like that.

Honestly, there are times during the day, like travelling to work, when the mind wanders a bit and I come up with these random thoughts.   Thinking about Dorian makes the journey so much more bearable.

I never have this problem. I use all of my gold to buy influence. I can never buy anything else, but I can usually end the game with 20+ influence levels.

I think he does Crossfit. They specialize in short, intense workouts . . . ;)

And I do like that prominent vein going up his left arm.
