... if nothing else so we can see what it is that Dorian thinks is so wonderful that it needs preserving.

Tevinter, like our own Ancient Rome, picked and chose from other cultures (elves and dwarves) the elements that would suit it best and discarded the rest. And also like our own Ancient Rome, Tevinter is responsible for influencing the culture of the rest of Thedas. When Dorian says, "Tevinter is where Thedas truly began," that is his patriotism speaking, but it's also true in a real sense. At one time Tevinter ruled most of Thedas, just as Rome did the western world. Beyond all of the corruption and magic there will be cultural elements worth preserving that don't have anything to do with that. "You can walk down a side street and find nothing built during the modern ages." That is amazing, and important, and worth preserving, just as our own crumbling ruins are.

Unfortunately, also like Rome, the upper echelons are too busy vying for power to see that they are slowly killing themselves. Tevinter is dying, and unless people like Dorian and Calpernia can stop it it will go the way of Rome and be lost forever, and all we will have left are the ruins, Tevene root words, bits of magical theory, and the undying ignominy of having been the country to execute Andraste.

Yes, but that is the whole point.   In our own world there have been mighty empires that have ultimately crumbled.   We still do have their ruins but the people and culture have gone.   Now it could be that if Tevinter were swept away, it would be flattened, rather as Arlathan was, except we don't know exactly what happened there.   I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Tevinter architecture wasn't based or built on top of elven ones.    Hence the inherent magic in the walls of places like Minrathous.      You could also have a situation where the buildings remain even if the people were gone.   In fact in the present in Thedas there are a lot of ruins around from the time of Ancient Tevinter.

So what I want to know is does Dorian simply want to preserve the old buildings and libraries of knowledge or is there some aspect of the culture of the people, their way of life, that is worth preserving?     Taking the analogy of Ancient Rome, would you really still want the sort of culture that was around at the height of their power to have been preserved?     Rome itself has never ceased to exist.    It is still the capital of Italy and the Italians are the direct descendants of their ancient ancestors but their culture and values are totally different.    So if there was a popular uprising in Tevinter that removed the Altus from power or at least demanded that it was shared equally with those of "lower" breeding, and slavery was abolished, would technically Tevinter as we currently know it cease to be?

It happened again!  Every time.  That moment Dorian breaks the fourth wall and Stroud becomes white noise....

Inspired by a LI song Thread.

What song do you think fits Dorian?

For some reason I can't stop thinking of Dorian when I hear this song.

Building A Mystery- Sarah McLachlan

I love when you get pictures of the characters breaking the fourth wall. Makes me laugh everytime, and think of The Office.

I caught one in the bedroom scene last night, made me laugh: My quizzie looking directly into the camera as Dorian prowls around him. Not sure if it's a 'are you really going to watch us?" look (answer: hell yes, about a hundred times), or a "can you believe he's actually still talking, because he had me by walking in the room" look.

Also, the black color mod for Dorian is outstanding, and I love it. Thank you soo much, Hazegurl!

Going back to the 90's, for this, but ever time this song comes up on my playlist, I think, my IQ would totally dedicate it to Dorian.

I have looked all over the place,
But you have got my favorite face.
Your eyelashes sparkle like gilded grass
and your lips are sweet and slippery
Like a cherub's bare wet ass ...

'Cause you're a human supernova,
A solar superman.
You're an angel with wings of fire,
A flying, giant friction blast.

You walk in clouds of glitter
and the sun reflects your eyes.
And every time the wind blows,
I can smell you in the sky.
Your kisses are as wicked as an F-16
And you **** like a volcano
and you're everything to me...

Dorian does say that Tevinter is "laden with history and culture," so I assume that there is. We hardly know anything about Tevinter other than the typical stuff about mages, slavery, and now the truth about its history with the elves.

Let's take Dorian's line at the Winter Palace when you tell him you expect a dance. "Find me 10 silk scarves and I'll show them a dance that will really shock them." That is part of culture: art, literature, music, and the like. If these are a people that have "no reserve, not in war and not in love," then they are certainly going to have that expressed in various ways. Even a culture as outwardly reserved as feudal Japan had marvelous works of art, music, poetry, plays, and so forth that revealed the heart of its people.

We simply don't know enough about Tevinter to make any sort of judgement about what might be "worth preserving" or not. I reject the idea that just because there are bad elements in Tevinter that none of its culture is worth preserving. You either care about learning from the past, which includes all elements, good and bad, or you don't.

We have scant information about ALL of the various cultures throughout Thedas in this regard. As far as the game lore goes, there is only so much that can be developed, and the focus must first be given to stuff that will appear in a game, or information that will serve as background for a plot.

Dorian's similar to Solas and Morrigan in that he wants to keep the knowledge and wonders of his homeland from being lost. Most people from outside the Imperium have an image of it being something akin to Mordor where everything is awful all the time. Dorian sees art, culture, language, everything that makes his home great on the verge of going down the drain because of internal squabbling and power struggles that need to be dialed back if Tevinter is to survive.

Outside of the main theme of faith, Inquisition talks a lot about politics and the concept of freedom. For instance, Bull points out that while a baker in Orlais hypothetically has more freedom than one under the Qun neither one of them really has a choice other than "work or starve". Dorian brings up the fact that being enslaved might not be as bad as living in poverty. Solas believes that anyone should be able to choose their lot in life even if you risk failure. Essentially, no one is completely free. Everyone from the lowliest peasant to nobility like Dorian are bound by some level of obligation or other limitations.

What song do you think fits Dorian?

I know this song is the opening theme of True Blood (one of my favourite shows), but it reminds me of Dorian, especially when he walks into inquisitor's quarters to ask "how bad does the inquisitor want to be". I think it fits Dorian's naughty romance. And i imagine Dorian would probably dedicate this song to my inquisitor xD (although IQ could also dedicate it to Dorian xD).

When you came in the air went out
And every shadow filled up with doubt
I don't know who you think you are
But before the night is through
I wanna do bad things with you

I'm the kind to sit up in his room
Heart sick an' eyes filled up with blue
I don't know what you've done to me
But I know this much is true
I wanna do bad things with you

When you came in the air went out
And all those shadows there filled up with doubt
I don't know who you think you are
But before the night is through
I wanna do bad things with you
I wanna do real bad things with you

I don't know what you've done to me
But I know this much is true
I wanna do bad things with you
I wanna do real bad things with you

*snip*

LOL!! I love the look on your Quizzy's face.

"can you believe he's actually still talking, because he had me by walking in the room"

Now that is most likely what every IQ is thinking the moment Dorian walks in, the rest is white noise until he pauses for an answer.

And Dorian is sooo sexy in Black. I can't believe no one in the dev team though it.

Dorian + Black = sexiness ensues.

I have yet to see a barrier Dorian can't bring down...

With his face.  While charging it with Fade-Step.

Once he bounced off it fairly hard, though.  Set his face all a tingle while he rubbed the front of his teeth vigorously with an index finger.  Then he charged it again and went through clean.  Not sure why he does that ;)

Yes, I do it all the time just because it cracks me up when he fails.  Though I believe Fade-step needs to be upgraded to Frost-step for it to work.  It's one of those things that happened by accident one day and I've been doing it ever since for the amusement and to get the knack of how much damage needs to be done to the barrier first before he face plants it at a dead run.

I found Dorian's missing jewelry in World of Warcraft... I almost bought it, but the stats kinda suck for my class/spec and didn't want to waste the money. In the game there are also two necklaces that have the name. Makes me wonder if the WoW devs also borrowed from Prince Dorian in The Mighty Hercules. It wouldn't surprise me.

[edit]

I realize you can't tell by this name, but this is a ring.

"Dorian's Missing Necklace" makes me wonder how Ponchard managed to send the Birthright all the way to Azeroth.

Also Savegameonline.com has Inquisition-themed drinks. Dorian's features little umbrellas, because of course it does.

Those pictures. *fans self*

I'm tempted to install it, just for pictures. I wouldn't want them sweaty all the time, but for that scene?? Umm, yes.

I just got finished replaying those scenes (I won't say how many times) to take some pictures with flycam. I love being able to pull the camera back and watch the scene! These were two of my favs, but now I think I'll have to take more with that mod!

lol!! I didn't even notice the elbows until now.

I love those flycam shots! I gotta play around with that thing more often.

Yeah I wouldn't use the mod all the time either but it does put a a more realistic effect to the post sex scene. They certainly worked up a sweat in that bedroom.

Also, watching Dorian smoothly seduce my Quizzy while they're sweating bullets was hilarious.

My Quizzy is sweating cause he's nervous, Dorian is sweating because...well he's just horny. lol!
