... if nothing else so we can see what it is that Dorian thinks is so wonderful that it needs preserving.
Tevinter, like our own Ancient Rome, picked and chose from other cultures (elves and dwarves) the elements that would suit it best and discarded the rest. And also like our own Ancient Rome, Tevinter is responsible for influencing the culture of the rest of Thedas. When Dorian says, "Tevinter is where Thedas truly began," that is his patriotism speaking, but it's also true in a real sense. At one time Tevinter ruled most of Thedas, just as Rome did the western world. Beyond all of the corruption and magic there will be cultural elements worth preserving that don't have anything to do with that. "You can walk down a side street and find nothing built during the modern ages." That is amazing, and important, and worth preserving, just as our own crumbling ruins are.
Unfortunately, also like Rome, the upper echelons are too busy vying for power to see that they are slowly killing themselves. Tevinter is dying, and unless people like Dorian and Calpernia can stop it it will go the way of Rome and be lost forever, and all we will have left are the ruins, Tevene root words, bits of magical theory, and the undying ignominy of having been the country to execute Andraste.
