I feel like TheDAS has a 'culture' of inclusivity now, so I'm not too worried in that regard. Pretty sure it's the most open-minded AAA franchise since ever. But yeah. I've recently been replaying ME3 while I wait for the BE ( <_< ) and the differences are... stark.

Yeah, after looking at the characters he wrote and my personal feelings about them, I'm feeling less than confident about him taking over.

Iron Bull - Dislike

Solas - Hate

Cole - Like well enough, but not crazy about.

Krem - Appreciate the concept, not wowed by the execution.

Jack - Hate

Tali - Dislike

Mordin - Like well enough, but not crazy about, especially compared to the general consensus about him.

Kasumi - Worships the ground her poorly utilized feet walk on.

I'm just getting increasingly more bummed.  :(

But I guess I have a definite reason to check out the new IP, but let's be honest, I would buy a pet rock if it had a Bioware logo on it at this point.

I feel the same. I'll give him a chance but I'm on the fence with one leg dangling in disappointment.  On one hand I'm no fan of DAI's overall story. But Dorian was the highlight of that entire game.

IB- Meh

Solas- He grew on me and now I like him but I didn't feel close to him.

Cole- I like him but didn't feel close

Krem- Meh

Jack- Meh, I don't mind romancing her or Miranda when I'm up for it. But I never mind dumping them for Kaidan.

Tali- Meh

Mordin- Liked him but not enough to stop myself from shooting him

Kasumi- Meh

Iron Bull - Meh
Solas - Meh
Cole - Decent
Krem - Not quite enough
Jack - Hate
Tali - Loved
Mordin - Loved
Kasumi - Not so much

His ME characters were great but DA? Not so much. I prefer Gaider.  :(

I guess apparently Weekes wrote Miranda too, in which case I'll have to take back what I said because that's my girl.

The Masked Empire and The Palace Job were both well-done. Plus, I really like Mordin and Miranda.

Definitely not my favorite thing in a person, but I suppose he does have to have some flaws. At least he's quick to apologize about it.

Yea, one of my favorite things about him is how aware of his flaws he seems to be but not in the "ugh I'm a horrible person" or the "eh I'm an ass you'll just have to deal with it" way. It's like he accepts who he is and isn't trying to change himself but he also is aware that sometimes causes him to behave badly and that's not ok. It's a very attractive quality in a person.

The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon?

Because it'll hurt more! ;)

David's characters have always been among my favorites (all the way back to Deekin), and the only DA romances I've ever really liked have all been David's. I'm sure there will be plenty of interesting things in the future games (and I'm still excited to see what's next), but I find it to be a sad day.

Wait wait wait waaaaaaait a minute... he wrote Deekin? Really?? I never knew that and it's awesome. Apparently I have a longer history of loving his characters than I knew.

But I guess I have a definite reason to check out the new IP, but let's be honest, I would buy a pet rock if it had a Bioware logo on it at this point.

I'm right there in that boat with you.

I just hope D. Gaider's departure won't negatively affect the direction towards inclusivity the DA games have taken. He seemed to be the one most vocal about these issues, which of course resulted in him drawing the ire of 'phobic players, and I, for one, liked that he was unapologetic about his vision, and no-nonsense in his responses to criticism.

Honestly... the writers at BioWare are on the whole the most diverse group of writers you could possibly find in probably any industry. I don't think it's a coincidence they've been pushing the bar in having more diverse characters. They have people capable of writing all of this stuff in nuanced and intelligent ways. This is probably one area we don't need to worry about.

If Weekes wrote Tali and Mordin, then he sure can create good charismatic characters.

As for Jack and Solas, if they managed to evoke such antipathy, then they have served their purpose. They were never meant for making players like them. Jack is in direct antagonism with Shepard and mostly anyone else. And Solas serves his own interests, showing apathy toward anything non-related to his mission.

The worst that can happen is for players to feel nothing but indifference toward a character.

I don't really know enough about Weeks' work to feel either optimistic or pessimistic about his future contributions - how do you people familiar with his stuff think he will tackle these subjects?

We'll have to see what happens (I don't think it would be solely his decision), but I honestly wouldn't worry.

He seems to be just as big an advocate of inclusion and representation (though his efforts to personally write it have resulted in mixed success).

Yes. He also wrote much of Irenicus in BG2 (I didn't love his companions as much back then; he did Anomen and Valygar and Viconia and maybe Aerie and some others).

I don't do Star Wars, so I never played KotOR, but he went on to do HotU, which is the best thing that ever came out of NWN (he also wrote Valen). Halaster remains his most inspired creation (Patrick thought he was being clever with ability descriptions; David did it for real in dialogue).

Then he started work on designing the DA world, and wrote Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran, Shale, Flemeth, The Stolen Throne, The Calling, Nathaniel, Anders (Awakening), Fenris, Asunder, the comics, Cassandra, and Dorian (and various other plots and NPCs throughout).

To say I'll miss his contributions here is a bit of an understatement. :(

John Dombrow wrote the whole Tuchanka arc.

Patrick did help to make sure Mordin came out right, but I don't believe he's ever taken credit for that scene.

I certainly hope so... but, like I said, I consider DA the pinnacle of modern videogame inclusivity, and ME a thinly disguised attempt at cashing in on additional players, with the target playerbase too involved to drop the franchise at that point. So 'BioWare writers' is a broad term, as far as I'm concerned, but not necessarily committed to the issues I care about...

But, ugh, Dorian... I conscripted the mages for the first time today, in hopes of getting his quests at a better pace, but then I reloaded and allied with them... I just realized, with the other decisions I will probably make on this playthrough, this would tip the scales heavily towards Vivienne becoming the Divine, and... no. Just, no.

Hehe.  Ouch!  I'm one of those additional players who came to DA only because of my great love for ME.

Vivienne as Divine?  Now I know this forum has entered a death spiral of depression today.  Someone post some Dorian pictures, STAT.  I'd do it but I'm stuck at work driving vertices through 3D space (bored) :(

And yea I thought about con scripting the mages one time for variety... and then the same thought occurred to me and I noped right out of that idea.

Dorian will be fine. He is the character Gaider claims to have always wanted to write. He would have made sure that Dorian is accounted for and stays the way he wanted him.

I don't disagree. I had a lot of issues with how both Steve and Samantha were written and incorporated, but at least they made an attempt when it would have been easy enough to just not include them at all. (Especially since before that point ME was completely empty of queer content beyond Liara.)

And Kelly Chambers.

Wow, that's a shock; I gasped aloud then I read it. DG leaving Dragon Age is a huge bummer for me. I've enjoyed his characters the most throughout all of the DA games, and his contribution to the series as a whole. Regarding Dorian in DLC, I'm with some others in this thread in hoping that major DLC content will either already have been written. It's March now, and although they did have a lengthy holiday (not begrudging them this, of course), they've been back at it for a couple of months now. I doubt they've been sitting around just reading the forums.

That said, when DG tweeted, "That moment when you're outlining a new novel, and you get a thought so evil you just HAVE to tell someone about it," my response was, in part, "Would be interesting to see DG’s hand in another setting." So, I suppose I'll get my wish now.

[edit]

Btw, Patrick did tweet regarding David's characters:

@jamesm5458 - will you take over writing david's characters.

@PatrickWeekes - No. Common sense and courtesy -- we ask writers now on other teams to check their characters for voice and consistency. :)

"We care deeply about everything" and Tevinter bring inspired by Rome (plus the whole stereotypical "hot-blooded Italian" trope) kind of explains it.

This is pretty much how I looked at it too. Also, Dorian has a high level of self-awareness. He knows when he has been an ass, which is one of the reasons I like him.

Just thought I'd point out that you don't automatically get Vivienne as Divine if you conscript the mages.   I only got her because I forgot to vote for Cassandra; when I reloaded and voted for Cassandra it made all the difference.    Also Dorian seems to find it amusing enough if you get Vivienne for Divine, as he says it reminds him of home having a mage as Divine, but without the blood magic.      I'm replaying at present with a male mage Lavellan, have just done Hushed Whispers and have conscripted the mages again, because I really don't like having to reward Fiona for her incompetence and idiocy by granting the mages total freedom with her still as their leader.    I do have an allied mages run through where I succeeded in getting a redeemed Lelianna as Divine but it does seem too  good to be true.

Now comes the hard bit so far as disciplining myself is concerned.   I am meant to be romancing Cassandra this time but with a male PC there is always going to be that temptation to succumb to Dorian's charms.    I have to keep telling myself that I would be cheating on my previous Dorian romance, my hunter Lavellan.    May be it wouldn't do any harm to have a little flirt, or would it?

I sided with the Templars this run through, and came out of a conversation with Vivienne discussing what a good Divine Cassandra would make with the 'support Vivienne as Divine operation available' message   I told Leiliana I thought she'd make a horrible Divine, and tried to talk to Cassandra about it, but it never came up - nor did I get an operation on the war table.  By game's end, Cassandra informed me that the Grand Clerics were going to name her Divine, which is what I wanted all along, but I thought I got to pick lol  Sorry, Vivi darling, you are going to be stuck as Grand Enchanter :P

I could be wrong, but I think Dorian is shooting dirty looks at my back.  Or he's plotting.   Time to find where he hid those scarves.
