I never got this kind of comment with him. But I did got an amusing convo with him and Blackwall at the Oasis. As you approach an mine, there will be an woman standing near it and Blackwall will say: "Hey, there is an woman over there!" and then Dorian will retort "really, Blackwall? Are you that desperate?". I got an good laugh with that one.

There's a trope emerging in the Dorian fanfic I've been reading .... that even though he complains constantly of being cold, Dorian actually feels warmer than average and his skin temperature is literally hot.  So take that for what you will.

I love that you take the height of the ceiling into account lol.  Yeah, Skyhold strikes me as chilly - brr.  But with a warm Dorian in your bed, I guess it can be toasty.

He looks good in gold doesn't he?   My male mage Lavellan has got the whole squad kitted out in gold/white/black.   Mages are cloth of gold, white leather and black metal, except Solas - I didn't bother with him since he's leaving and doesn't consider himself part of the team.  Dorian and Vivenne look awesome and my mage Lavellan has crafted Keeper robes and then tinted them a combination of gold over shirt and white undershirt.   Rogues and warriors have gold tinted metal, black leather and white cloth.

 

Question about Dorian's romance tarot card.   Any idea what the symbolism is there?    There is a black serpent wrapped around him and held in the left hand and what is either a white flower or possibly a stylised dragon head in his right hand.    Dorian's greatest fear is temptation, so is this meant to suggest that the romance partner (white symbol) is helping keep him from temptation (black symbol)?    Or does the black serpent hark back to what his father tried to do to him, seeing as he has his house Parvus birth right amulet around his neck?

So question about Dorian's romance card.

 

 

Is he meant to be holding an origami flower or is it something else? I'm never quite sure.

 

^ I think it's supposed to just be an actual flower, and it's the art style that's making it look kinda paper-ish..? Maybe, that is. I don't actually know.

 

It looks like a white lilac. White is Dorian's color and the snake is a part of Tevinter's heraldry, both of which represent who he is. So he's kind of holding his heart in his hands.

Also the gauntleted hand across his chest is probably the Inquisitor's given that the hand is used to symbolize him. That and that little pendant is probably the Magister's Birthright.

 

The color white is generally a sign of good, while white flowers in particular usually symbolizes purity and innocence in art. Black (the snake) is the opposite of white and represents mystery, secrecy and evil. In biblical art, snakes are a symbol of Satan. It's also related to dragons (and we know Tevinter likes their dragon statues). In this case the snake most definitely is a sign of Tevinter. It makes me wonder if the common symbolism behind snakes is why they chose it as part of the Tevinter heraldry, since they are the "bad guys" of Thedas, instead of simply having it be dragons. Not as a sign of Satan, but evil in general. The gold rings are probably there to show his wealth (if they have a meaning beyond aesthetics that is).

 

The way the snake wraps around his body makes me think it's a way to show how trapped Dorian feels by the traditions of his homeland. And in combination with the white flower it could represent his wanting to do good in a land of "evil", and him being one of the few with a pure mind. I never thought of the pendant too much until now, but it being his birthright is a good observation. I would guess it's there to signify that you gave it back to him, with it being in the IQ's hand an all, and not much else.

 

The fact that this card shows up after the scene where the IQ and Dorian discuss a serious relationship for the first time (whether you choose to have sex or not) is probably why he's naked. He has shown a vulnerable side of himself; a fear of a relationship that might just hurt him in the end. All of these signs are parts of him, and the way he reaches out with everything attached to him might suggest that he's giving you the opportunity to be with him - but accepting also means that what is part of him will be a part of your life too, in some sense. All of his burdens and wants.

 

Or maybe I'm just thinking waaay too much into this... (I just realized this doesn't even answer the question in the first place lol, but I took it as an opportunity to analyse the picture)

 

I think the dragon and snake symbol is because they basically represent the same thing. Tevinter worshipped dragons, and the word Dragon derives from the Greek word Drakon, that means huge snake (Asian dragons for example look a lot more like snakes). I always thought that's why Tevinter has a dragon and a snake in the heraldry.

 

I'm blaming myself for not being very clear with my wording - when I said "they" I meant the developers of the game. As in the developers might have thought it fitting to use snakes in addition to dragons since they are related and a common sign of evil. To better portray them as bad guys in ways of storytelling. Not that the Tevinters are advertising themselves as evil, haha. 

 

I read this on the wiki: "Thalsian established temples to worship dragons, which became a symbol of power within the Imperium", which isn't a surprise, but I assume that goes for the snakes as well. Wanting to show power is a stereotypical way of portraying bad guys, so it kind of symbolizes evil in that sense.

 

Snakes can also represent immortality and renewal (since they shed their skin).

 

I'd say immortality adds to the power fantasy, but I'm not sure if renewal is relevant in this case. Tevinter is a land of tradition - they fight to keep things like they've always been, and to make changes is more of what Dorian wants. That might work for his romance card now that I think about it. But I still like to think the flower represents good and the snake represents evil, makes things more dramatic that way.

Here's a question, do the tarot cards exist in-game? As in the Inquisitor has the actual deck with all the party members painted on to them?

Because Dorian would probably be constantly bothering the artist with the fact that they "never get his nose right".

Thank you, it seems it does pretty much symbolise the balance of good and evil in Dorian's life.   I hadn't really studied it much before but I've just been back to replay through the last part of my Hunter Lavellan/Dorian romance version because I hadn't done the Hissing Wastes and very few of the dragons (because I was so eager to get to the end of the romance) but doing them after destroying Cory you don't get the lovely alone time with Dorian in between battles; I make a point of going back for a kiss after practically every battle because I'm always so glad we've survived them.  I also wanted to max out his levels because I've not done JoH yet but am planning on starting it once I have (I'm currently on holiday so have a bit more time at my disposal).

 

I still favour Dorian's romance.   I loved doing Cass and it was sweet how soppy and romantic she is deep down but I feel a real connection with Dorian.   So I have two friendship runs, one with female mage Lavellan (who needed Dorian's shoulder to cry on after Solas left her) and one with a confident, flirty male mage Lavellan (who has an interesting dynamic going on between him, Dorian and Cass - I call them the 3 musketeers) but Hunter Lavellan romance is still my favourite play through, partly because he isn't a mage so had to overcome more ingrained prejudice and fear where Tevinter is concerned and a certain feeling of inadequacy that he always felt in not having magic, so I feel their relationship is deeper as a result.
