I don't think there has been a definitive timetable set but the three years has been proposed because of the amount of travelling involved.   We bounce backwards and forwards from Haven and Skyhold around Ferelden and Orlais but the reality would be very different.   Initially we don't even have horses.   Then once we have secured those we have to go around the Frostbacks rather than through them.   Eventually we can make our own shortcut through the mountains but even so it would take time to travel from, say, Crestwood all the way back to Skyhold and then on to Val Royeaux and even further to the Western Approach.   The big advantage to Briala in having the eluvian network was that she could move her elves around from place to place in days when it would take other people weeks.   Whilst we can get her on side, there is no indication that she ever offers us the use of this.   Morrigan also only ever shows us her eluvian and it is unclear whether she can actually do anything other than travel to the Crossroads, but when we advance to the Arbor Wilds we have to do it the old fashioned way on the surface and it is only once we located the eluvian in the Temple and it was activated that we were able to use it to return home.   When we advance on Adamant Fortress we are loaned siege engines by the ruler of Jader.  This is in eastern Orlais and Adamant is in the far west, so it would take weeks to move such large equipment that distance.

Moving around Ferelden in DAO was meant to have taken a year and much smaller distances were involved.   So realistically we could not have done all that we did in DAI  (if you do everything) in under 2 years and much nearer 3.  Even sticking to just the main plot would probably require close to 2 years.  The timescale in the Hushed Whispers future is probably misleading since having removed the Inquisitor from events, Corypheus was able to advance his cause largely unopposed and in any case Alexius was constantly trying to mess with the timeline, which could have confused issues.

Sooo... I finally learned how to make gifs  ^_^ Yesterday I made my first gif set comparing Dorian and Oberyn fighting styles (because I'm obsessed xD) and they both look pretty awesome:

Does anyone know the name of the girl to whom Dorian was betrothed at birth?  Or anything else about her?

There's a banter with Varric about the girl:

  • Varric: Should you be married off right now, Sparkler? Little magelets running amok.
  • Dorian: If my family had their way.
  • Varric: Had someone lined up for you, huh?
  • Dorian: Livia Herathinos. Bright girl, hourglass figure, wicked tongue. Relieved I'm gone, I expect.
  • Varric: Sounds like you two would have made a happy couple.
  • Dorian: Oh yes. Trading coy insults at every party would have been a delight.

Well according to Dorian her name is Livia Herathinos, "bright girl, hourglass figure, wicked tongue".    However, a gossip letter in WoT2 says the "Everens could have married their girl off to someone actually interested".   So unless Herathinos is a middle name, we seem to have a bit of a contradiction.   Not the first one in WoT2 it has to be admitted.   I'd go with what Dorian says to Varric since he is far more likely to know than some third party gossip.

Footnote: Livia seems to be a very popular girl's name in Tevinter.   Alexius' wife was also called Livia.    Probably because the mother of Darinius, the founder of the Tevinter Imperium, was the high queen Livia of the kingdom of Tevinter.

Hello everyone.  Long time, no see.  Finally got back round to recovering from the Hard drive crash and successfully remade my IQ the way he was before after some work.  So I'm back at it.

Came by to say,  Happy Birthday, Ramon Tikaram!  aka Dorian :)

So Dorian's thirty at the start of Inquisition yeah? And the story takes place over +- 3 years right? Do 33 year old's start getting gray hairs? Cuz imagine Dorian seeing his first gray hair in his moustahce one morning.

Debatable what age he is.  It's never said and the Devs refuse questions about it.  You'll hear all sorts.  I interpret his back story as suggesting somewhere in his 20s simply because I can't resolve House Pavus waiting until his 30s to commit marriage and a brood of little Pavuses.    Regardless, it's up to our respective headcannon :)

That said, Ramon, his voice actor, has had very stylish grey streaks in his hair above each ear since his late 20s, getting wider and wider over the years.

Glad to see you didn't find something in game that matched how that fight ended. :P

That's why I put that last gif, to make clear how my version ends :P

LOL o_O it fits the snake theme, but I guess I still prefer the "stab repeatedly" version

I love how this basically makes it sound like she's a female Dorian and it makes me wonder whether they could have been friends if the circumstances were different.

Despite Dorian's remark for a friend-Inquisitor at the end referring to them as his "best and only friend," I tend to feel that is a bit of emotional hyperbole on his part. We do know that he at least has acquaintances in Tevinter from stuff in the game as well as in WoT, but how close he feels to them, or if he would even use the word "friend" is unknown.

I do wonder what type of person he would gravitate toward as a friend. Would it be someone more like himself, or the opposite type like Felix? Of course, this is a rather simplistic view since Dorian has a lot of layers and only certain people would get to see most or all of them.

I suppose it does depend on what Dorian defines as a friend.  I think there is a degree of trust and loyalty involved, which might be harder to believe in someone raised in Tevinter.    Felix was a friend because Dorian felt he could trust him, knowing he was a better man than most he knew.    I think he might also have viewed Alexius as a friend but that is harder to quantify because Dorian seems to feel awkward when he sees himself as being in debt to someone and he definitely owed a lot to Alexius.

He might have been able to view Livia as a friend but just because she is bright and witty doesn't necessarily mean he would trust her, any more than if he had not been gay it would necessarily meant they would have had a happy marriage.  He might enjoy her company at a superficial level but not necessarily anything more.   His declaration of loyalty to the Inquisitor doesn't seem to depend so much on whether you are alike or unalike in character but how you treat him and others, how you conduct yourself.      I think he finds it easier to view the Inquisitor as a friend because he has been able to observe them and their actions at close quarters in a way that he probably never could with people he knew in Tevinter.

My best guess (and handwave) would be that Dorian's managed to successfully thwart more than one attempt to get him engaged by his parents, which is why he's been linked to two different women named Livia at various points in time?

At this point I'm prepared to just go "Woo more Dorian stuff" and not put too much thought into it.

Although I must say, IF we go to Tevinter in the next DA book DG is writing, and IF Dorian happens to be in it, it will be interesting to see what a prose-style writing of Dorian would be like. Writing game dialog, as much as I adore Dorian's, is different from writing prose. I really need to reread his other novels, as I can't remember how he writes anymore =/.

Hi there.   I thought I'd share another bit of trivia that indirectly pertains to Dorian that I picked up while reading about Sten.   You will recall that several pages back I was speculating whether Dorian's words to Bull about his only experience of true Qunari was running away from them, was simply banter or had an element of truth.   Well apparently in 9.12 Sten led an assault on the mainland nearest Seheron, focussed on the port city of Quarinus and the surrounding countryside.   Obviously Dorian wouldn't remember this as he was only one at the time.   However, having suffered great losses in the unsuccessful attempt, Sten apparently argued with the Arishok about the wisdom of direct assaults on mainland Tevinter but was rebuffed and reassigned.   From which, I must assume that further assaults took place in the years following and naturally Quarinus and the surrounding areas would have borne the brunt of this.   So likely at some point, probably while still a boy and therefore still at home with his parents (and on good terms with his father) Dorian probably did have a direct experience of facing aggressive Qunari and given his age the only sensible course would have been to run as fast as he could in the opposite direction.

As for DG's writing style, I haven't read his earlier ones but from what people say, I would think that it has got better with practise as I enjoyed Asunder and he seemed to handle the dialogue okay in that.

Dorian: Are you still brooding?

Fenris: I don't brood.

Dorian: You're from Tevinter, melodrama and alcoholism are cornerstones of our society.

Fenris: As is dark magic and oppression.

Dorian: What a ray of sunshine you are!

Or:

Dorian: We'll listen to what the Magister has to say. If they try anything we'll kill everyone! You're good at that!

Fenris: (grunts)

Or:

Dorian: So about that magical fisting thing you do...how's that work exactly? You don't know do you? Just wiggle your fingers and boom! Interior organs are now anterior organs.

Fenris: I can demonstrate the technique.

Dorian: I'll pass if you don't mind, I'm quite attached to my innards.

I'd really prefer to never have Dorian and Fenris in the same place canonically. Being around Dorian is just going to make Fenris even more obnoxious and insufferable, and I already have a hard time maintaining sympathy for him.

So the DA sub on Reddit did a pretty in depth survey of their demographics and not only did Dorian win most popular companion for DAI, but more interestingly, more men playing male inquisitiors were romancing him than men playing male inquisitiors were romancing Josephine. And only about 25% of the male Redditors identified as non-heterosexual, so there's a pretty significant amount of straight men romancing him just because he's so awesome.
